lehigh university brown and white vol 67—no 49 bethlehem pa friday may 18 1956 un 6-0331 lodge graduation speaker by bur sienkiewicz american un delegate to highlight ceremonies henry cabot lodge jr united states representative to the united nations and representative to the security council will be the com mencement speaker here june 18 the brown and white has learned his topic has not yet been announced the former senator and newspaperman will be speaking before approximately 550 graduating seniors graduate students parents and guests attending the grace hall festivities a key figure in many of the recent un controversies lodge is extreme ly well-rounded in foreign affairs national politics and government in general as well as possessing outstanding knowledge of military problems before embarking on a political career the grandson of the late henry cabot lodge who served in the u.s senate for 31 years was a member of the editorial staffs of the old boston evening transcript and the new york herald tribune he joined the transcript staff during his senior year at harvard graduating from the cambridge school in 1924 lodge's most recent action in the un security council involved the middle-east peace mission of un secretary-general dag hammar skjold as the american representative lodge introduced several minor changes designed to offset amendments proposed by russian delegate arkady sobolev sobolev had charged certain western powers with planning armed intervention in the middle east on pre-text of preventing war the soviet representative had then offered resolutions that would have restricted the freedom of hammarskj old's inspection tour lodge successfully op posed the russian's actions last december when the russian ...... delegation was pushing a proposal for the admittance of outer mon golia to the un lodge countered the soviet plan with a plan for the en trance of japan into the un how ever both proposals were by-passed and no action was taken lodge abandoned his journal istic career in 1932 when he was successful in his bid for a seat in the massachusetts legislature lodge also won a second-term battle for his seat in the bay state in 1936 when he was only 34 lodge was elected massachusetts representative to the united states senate and then won re-election irj 1942 and 1946 serving a total of 13 years he resigned his seat in the senate henry cabot lodge jr zeiter ike get top honors at flagpole day rites by pete burdash edward b eichelberger 56 be came the first wrestler in university history to receive the coveted h r bosey reiter leadership cup for all-around campus leadership he accepted the award from dr e ken neth smiley vice-president at the annual flagpole ceremonies wed nesday eichelberger was chosen for the reiter leadership cup for his participation and service on the student-faculty discipline committee his participation in three community religious orga nizations and as captain of the varsity wrestling squad he is a member of omicron delta kappa national senior leadership honorary society and eta kappa nu national honorary electrical engi neering fraternity he also received the lehigh home club wrestling tro phy william e zeiter 56 was the re cipient of the dean's service award which was presented by john d leith associate dean zeiter is a member of phi beta kappa senior honorary in the liberal arts field tau beta pi engineering equivalent to phi beta kappa pi mv epsilon mathematics honorary eta kap pa nu national honorary elec trical engineering fraternity and omicron delta kappa national senior leadership honorary soci ety the arcadia student service award was awarded to f bruce waechter by arcadia president wil liam a collins waechter is a past president of arcadia and has been editor-in chief associate editor scheduling and managing editors of the epito me he is also former president of pi delta epsilon national honorary journalism society omicron delta kappa national senior leadership epitome dedlcatlon university president martin d whitaker holds a copy of the 1956 epitome which has been dedicated to him edi tor ferd thun looks on after having announced the dedication to the president now in his 10th year at that post whitaker in 10th year gets epitome dedication the 1956 epitome was dedicated tq president martin d whitaker it was announced at wednesday's flagpole ceremonies ferd thun 56 editor-in-chief of the book announced the de dication in recognition of his 10 years of leadership and service as thun revealed to whom the book was dedicated dr whitaker standing to one side after presenting the ernesta drinker lacrosses cup : looked up in surprise then a smile broke over his face as he moved forward to acknowledge the presen tation | in a spontaneous gesture of re spect the students stood and ap plauded while dr whitaker shook hands with thun the yearbook was distributed immediately after the ceremony in drown hall under the super vision of tom burgin business manager of the book this year's book is bound in a green cover and features color pic tures of fritz lab inside the front cover following these pictures is the dedication with a picture and sketch of dr whitaker the dedication praised whitaker for his wisdom and sincerity of pur pose the text reads over the past decade dr whitaker has served lehigh devotedly and successfully coming to lehigh in 1946 from oak ridge where he di rected the clinton laboratories in developing vital nuclear ma terials president whitaker has applied his imaginative grasp of difficult problems to the post war task of building up a mod ern university his progress reviewed in the evidence of expanding endowment and rising stand stone structures has in itself been impressive comparable stated johns hopkins professor fritz machlup last night in a talk on the inferiority complex of the social sciences before an audience of 500 in packard lab audi torium speaking under the auspices ( of the cls committee and three other campus groups machlups lecture was a satisfying combi nation of intellect and entertain ment as he explained why social sciences are claimed to be infer ior and why they actually are not so in the area of prediction and con trol of future events the predict tions are less perfect in the social sciences because people make de mands of social sciences for which insufficient information is available sherrill to preach at baccalaureate henry knox sherrill d.d the 20th presiding bishop of the protestant episopal church will deliver the baccalaureate sermon in packer memo rial church june 17 the service will mark the opening of the two-day graduation festivities for the class of 1955 as presiding bishop the rt rev henry knox sherrill is titular head of the episcopal church president of the national council ad ministrative body of the church and chairman of the board of direct ors of the domestic and foreign missionary society the missionary arm of the episcopal church appointed to this position in 1947 bishop sherrill's term expires in november 1958 when he reaches the age of 68 in 1950 he was elected first president of the newly organized national council of churches of christ in america and in 1954 he was elected one of the six presidents of the world council of churches born in brooklyn n.y nov 6 1890 bishop sherrill attended poly technic preparatory school in brooklyn and the hotchkiss school at 16 he entered yale university and was graduated in 1911 his ordination as deacon on july 1 1914 followed graduation from the episcopal theological school cam bridge mass with the degree of bachelor of divinity a year later he was ordained priest and served three years as as sistant at trinity church boston ! bishop sherrill went overseas i as a chaplain in the american expeditionary forces in 1917 following the war he remained in france serving as a red cross and u.s army chaplain in 1923 he became rector of
