lehigh university brown and white vol 67—no 47 bethlehem pa friday may 11 1956 un 6-0331 sac to review chi psi pro case the committee on student activities agreed to hear an appeal by chi psi fraternity recently placed on social probation by sac if the officers of chi psi are prepared to present additional evidence on the case as stated in their request for appeal the request for appeal from joel gaden 56 president of chi psi was presented to sac by chairman dean byron c hayes at their tuesday meeting with the request for appeal based on three points as stated in gaden's letter the appeal is three-fold 1 i would like to submit additional facts directly concerning the alleged behavior of members of chi psi on the friday evening of 1956 spring houseparty 2 i would like to re-state the sincere the concerted effort on the part of the officers and members of chi psi to carry out the spirit of the rules and regulations 3 i think the facts could be presented in a truer light if the resident chaperones and social chaperones of the event were asked to testify sac's action was stated in a letter to chi psi from the committee which in part read at its meeting on tuesday noon the committee on student activities agreed to hear an appeal if additional evidence is pre sented time of the review of the case by sac was not immediately released in the letter originally inform ing chi psi of their probationary status the committee stated that particular members of chi psi lodge did not conduct them leckonby to deliver chapel talk rev george b leckonby retired episcopal clergyman and father oi coach william leckonby will be guest speaker at the chapel service in packer memorial chapel sunday the service will also commemorate the death of james charles grava ny former lehigh student who died of leukemia in 1949 rev leckonby retired from ac tive ministry in 1954 since his ordination in 1914 he has served numerous congregations in ken tucky ohio and new york for a period of 40 years he now re sides at west sand lake n.y a special feature of the service will be a commemoration of the death of gravany a member of the class of 1952 and a member of lambda chi alpha fraternity lambda chi alpha sponsors the annual memorial service attends the service as a unit and furnishes ush ers for the service while gravany was a student here he distinguished himself as an excellent swimmer his parents es tablished the james charles gra vany memorial swimming trophy as a memorial to their son the award has been annually bestowed upon the best freshman swimmer since 1949 14 groups cooperating in talk of fritz machlup whether the standing-room-only audience for george wald which in augurated the cooperative lecture series in march resulted from a fluke a happy combination of cir cumstances or the striking of a mother-lode of extracurricular in tellectual interest has puzzled the cls committee since the harvard biologist's visit inclined toward the latter be lief but taking no chances cls has reproduced for its second lecture the happy combination an eminent scholar a skilled lecturer a controversial topic and 14 sponsoring and cooperat ing groups the second lecturer in the new cls program will be dr fritz machlup professor of political eco nomy at the johns hopkins univer sity he will speak on the inferior ity complex of the social sciences at 8 p.m next thursday may 17 in packard lab auditorium sponsored by the economics seminar of the college of business administration pi gamma mu the national social science honor society the r w blake philosophical soci ety and the cls committee dr machlup's lecture is also on the agenda of 10 other campus groups one of the leading theorists in the field of economics and of social science in general dr machlup is recognized as an ex cellent scholar and a highly competent teacher the austrian-born political eco nomist is particularly concerned with the similarities and differences seidle to speak at frosh feast in maennerchor freshman class cabinet will hold the third annual freshman banquet at the beethoven maennerchor may 17 president martin d whitaker will be guest of honor and director of admissions charles a seidle will be the guest speaker class officers are endeavoring to make the banquet a sort of rally at which the unity and spirit of the class will be pro claimed existing and thriving a limited supply of tickets for the banquet will be available through cabinet representatives the ban quet will start at 5:45 p.m with a turkey dinner and last until 7:30 p.m tickets will cost 2.50 along with the banquet plans the class cabinet issued a report on its progress up to this time this semes ter the cabinet has been occupied in preparing a permanent constitution for future freshman cabinets and or ganizing the class banquet montville added that from all in dications it seems that the class of 59 will start its sophomore year with 400 in the bank 49 to get awards the joint army-air force awards and decorations ceremony will be held in taylor stadium monday at 4:10 p.m this is one of the events o armed forces week in which cadets from lehigh will participate the faculty has been invited to attend receiving awards will be 30 army cadets along with 19 cadets en rolled in the air force program dr martin d whitaker will present the president's award to five air force rotc cadets who have de monstrated scholastic excellence and military achievement reflecting cre dit on lehigh and the rotc pro gram seniors receiving the awards are robert c mcgrory and arthur f veinott juniors are john r ley on james a bain and peter r schuyler the chicago tribune award will be presented to juniors wilburt m herbener and richard c marquart seniors who will receive it are rich ard cunningham and william d murray the award is presented bj the chicago tribune for military achievement and scholastic attain ment the arnold air society award will be presented by the ralph a cheli squadron of the arnold singing groups vie at pops concert inter-living group singing competition will once again be held in con junction with the lehigh pops concert 8 p.m saturday may 26 other features include piano soloist william fairlamb performing george gershwin's rhapsody in blue and soprano beverly bowser brilliant pops soloist in 1954 pictured above are the members of beta theta pi singing group which will compete for its third consecutive win in the contest other features will be novelty numbers by the brown and white band trumpet and trombone sections the concert will be in grace hall lower floor in a novel cabaret setting with refreshments free there will be a nominal 75 cent charge to cover the cost of soloists following the concert a dance will be held with music supplied by the colegians reservations may be made by letter or in person at the arcadia office in drown hall or at the music department charley romps in broughal at 8 charley's aunt one of the most famous comedies in modern theatre history will be presented by mustard and cheese tonight and tomorrow night in broughal jr high school at 8:30 p.m tonight the glee club will be on a double bill with m&c presenting a concert of their favorite songs in the comedy silas morse 59 will play lord babberly who is tricked into impersonating charley's aunt and starts the hilarious events which follow the two instigators of the trickery jack ches ney and charles wyckeham will be played by delmont kennedy 57 and james russel 58 charles rosenberg 56 as stephen spettigue is drawn into agreeing to the marriage of his ward amy to charley colonel chesney played by john v thompson overcomes countless obstacles and finally proposes to his long-lost childhood sweetheart lucy also featured in the play are four local girls merle letowt rose marie navarro helen mcshane and ann matus all except ann matus are veteran m&c performers miss letowt who will play the role of kitty verdun has played many roles at the draw ing room theater and with m&c players she has also sung the lead in music festivals miss mcchane amy in the play was starred as viola in m&c's twelfth night this year miss navarro who will be ela in the performance is well known for her dance work in productions in tihs area last year she played the lead in detective story with m&c players the glee club under the di rection of robert cutler will present the first part of the fri day night performance they will sing many of their more popular numbers such as high barbary and po of lazarus the cliff clefs will be an added feature of the performance curtain time for both perform ances is 8:30 tickets for the friday performance are 1.00 and the sat urday tickets are 75 cents tickets will be available at the door for both performances class elections over mon at 4 the polls for class officer elec tions opened this morning at 9 a.m and will remain open today until 4 p.m the elections will last through tomorrow 9 a.m until noon and on monday from 9 a.m until 4 p.m students who can't present id cards to election officals can be eligible to vote if they can be identified by mrs moravec in the arcadia office fifty-four names are on the ballot for the offices of president secretary and treasurer of the three class es voting booths are located in drown hall lamberton hall pack ard lab and christmas-saucon halls the polls will be operated by mem bers of alpha phi omega national service fraternity campaigning will continue through today and the rest of the voting period but candidates are warned not to solicit votes within 100 feet of the voting locations the ballots will be counted on monday night and the results of the elections will be known in the next issue of the brown and white center hours a revision of hours for phy sicians at the health center has been announced as follows dr alfred lovell will be on duty daily monday through satur day from 9 to 11 a.m dr gil bert hoffman will be available on monday tuesday thursday and friday afternoons at times to be announced at 11 a.m each day 95 must bring pix to epitome by wednesday the list of the 1957 graduating seniors whose pictures may not be included in next years epitome may be quite long approximately 95 students scheduled to have their pictures and names appear in the 57 epi tome have not turned in their senior pictures or contacted the yearbook office those who do not contact the yearbook may be left out of the book or at best have their pictures placed among the ads all men of feb 57 june 57 and feb
