the ceremony at the banquet which followed dr rocco j tresolini spoke on the supreme court as a political institution see story page 3 plan 4th floor for williams hall the addition of a fourth floor to williams hall was announced by presi dent martin d whitaker at a faculty meeting yesterday afternoon the new addition and restoration is expected to cost approximately 200,000 according to andrew w litzenberger superintendent of buildings and grounds plans for the addition are being prepared by litzenberger negotiations with a contractor are progressing and construction on williams is expected to begin as soon as the labor-contract dispute is set tled and strikes have ended the new facilities approved by the board of trustees will add ap proximately 25 per cent additional space for laboratories and offices for the biology geology and metallurgy departments i really think the appearance of williams hall will be greatly improved and there will be more usable space stated litz enberger in discussing the exter nal appearance of the new addi tion slight modifications of the present design of the structure built in 1903 will be incorporated in the window arrangement and the roof a fire proof floor will be added and fire escapes will be erected to the east and west sides of the building the third floor is expected to be completed by opening of school next fall while the fourth floor will take additional time to complete classes will be scheduled during the restoration of the third floor sauerbrey is 7th named for washington study alfred c sauerbrey 58 will be lehigh's seventh representative to attend the washington semester an accounting major sauerbrey will attend american university he will take 15 hours includ ing a three-hour seminar on american national government plus i three credit hour research project entitled a more effect tive budgetary process and nine hours of classroom work sauerbrey a graduate of lawson high school baltimore where he re ceived the alumni award as an out standing student in the graduating class is a member of phi sigma kappa which is the fraternity of five of the 15 members of the newly initiated honors program his other activities include being treasurer of the german club and a member of the accounting society lehigh business society pershing rifles and the newtonian society sauerbrey's predecessors in the washington semester program have all made outstanding records with alfred c sauerbrey chi psi placed on pro by sac will appeal the student-faculty committee on student activities voted unanimously wednesday night to place chi psi fraternity on social probation until nov 15 for the actions of members on friday night of houseparty the three reasons given by sac for its action are that chi psi mem bers did not attempt to avoid even the suspicion of any improper or irregular conduct which would bring the name of the fraternity or the university into disrepute ... that they did not see fit to live up to the intent of the procedures for houseparty as set forth by the faculty and student committee on houseparty and that particular members of chi psi lodge did not conduct themselves in a manner becoming a student and gentleman dean byron c hayes chairman ex officio of sac informed chi psi of the committee's action in a letter sent thursday the punitive action was taken two sac members said because some members of chi psi yelled derogatory and insulting remarks at dean hayes as he was driving with mrs hayes in sayre park it was the first tme in recent years that sac has placed a living group on social probation the committee consists of dean hayes chaplain raymond e fuessle who did not participate in sac's action and prof thomas e jackson both elected by the faculty and mahlon b simon jr nelson l bond jr and lewis m soars all 57 elected by arcadia members of sac told the brown and white they had used their right to punish chi psi under a new interpretation of university regulations governing the com mittee the regulation reads student or ganizations or groups must secure permission from the committee on student activities for all dances teas banquets and the alleged incidents was not present to testify counselors to be must apply before mar 14 the dean of students has an nounced that application forms for appointments for 1956-57 in the resi dence halls counseling program are available at either the office of the dean of students or the office of the director of residence halls the deadline for return of the completed forms is 5 p.m on monday science has thrown in the sponge on trying to find a cure for one of the world's most serious diseases no matter how hard the learned men of the world of microbes and atoms have tried they just can't seem to find a cure for the annual plague this plague fatale has al ready taken its initial toll of the year and apparently is on the march to oust polio and cancer from their place on the killer list it has struck in such ports as philadelphia new haven new brunswick milheim and gettysburg this particular disease which was apparently designed to throw the idea of law and order into a state of complete chaos is best known by such mysterious titles as spring fever seasonal madness and spring madness the most serious case so far was the philadelphia story there 116 students of the university of penn sylvania wound up in gourt in the aftermath of a gigantic brawl in the usually peaceful quak er city the sons of ben frank lin decided to wake up the town and just let loose with an evening of shouting name-call ing egg and rock throwing false alarm sending barricading trolley and auto routes in the city and disrupting the nor mal routine of the police to block the trolley and auto by ways the penns carted debris con zieter granted 6,900 root-tilden scholarship the coveted 6,900 root-tilden scholarship to new york university law school has been awarded to william e zeiter 56 for three years of study only 19 other students throughout the nation were similar ly honored dean robert more of the col lege of arts and science stated we are very happy he got one of the outstanding awards possi ble in the field law of study i do not know of any more at tractive possible award we feel class elections start friday at 9 the polls for election of class of ficers will open friday morning at 9 a.m with 54 names on the ballot for the position of president secre tary and treasurer of the three classes under the hare preferential system of balloting those who win second place in votes for the class presidents will win the vice-presidential posts voting booths will be located in drown hall lamberton hall pack ard lab and christmas-saucon hall according to al myers 58 election committee chairman as in the past members of alpha phi omega national service frater 1 nity will operate the four voting fraternity's new look . . on schedule—construction of the new phi sigma kappa house is on schedule and work is being done rapidly on the three-story brick build ing the phi sigs plan to move into their new house by lafayette weekend next semester on the first floor will be a game room a dining room and living quar ters for the cook living quarters for the brothers will be on the second and third floors these will consist of dormitory type sleeping rooms and two-man study rooms there
