lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 45 friday may 4,1956 un 6-0331 b&w one of six in nation gets all american honor the brown and white has been awarded the all-american honor rating by the associated collegiate press it is one of the six publica tions throughout the country in the two or three times weekly class to receive the award this the first time since 1935 that the brown and white has received such recognition it is the highest honor the publica tion could win from acp for 35 years the finest rating service for the collegiate press the paper received 1750 total points from judging the various de partments 1700 are necessary for this honor rating critic judge rat ing the brown and white was gar eth d hiebert columnist and for mer assistant city editor of the st paul pioneer press and dispatch hiebert commended the paper for superior coverage of campus af fairs its high standard of profes sional writing and representation and the effectiveness of your edi torials special recognition was given the sports pages of the paper where hiebert commented he seldom rates a paper excellent in this category sports cover age was rated superior with excellent sports writing the paper received comment on ex cellent makeup layout and its excellent headlines and pho tography in noting general writing hiebert 2 post ball after crash john a nice 57 and kenneth b hill 56 both members of sigma phi epsilon fraternity 61 w mar ket st posted 500 bail on charges growing out of a traffic accident at 10th ave and union blvd friday night nice has been charged with drunken driving hill is accus ed of permitting an intoxicated person to drive his car police said nice was driving east on union blvd when he sideswiped a car headed in the opposite direc tion vehicle damages totaled 350 tc the westbound car owned by john e steers of bethlehem and 15 to nice's car ss exam offered to students may 17 students who were unable to take the regularly scheduled selective service college qualification tests in november 1955 and april 1956 will be able to do so on thursday may 17 1956 applications for the may 17 test must be postmarked no later than next monday may 7 the special test will be administered by science research associates inc a student need not have applied for one of the previous tests in order to be eligible applicants for the test will receive assistance in filling out their application cards from the bethlehem board clerks sue alcock named spring hp queen miss sue alcock a 19-year-od beauty from west chester pa was chosen spring houseparty queen from among three finalists at friday night's formal the brunette queen attends goldy-beacon business school in wil mington del and was a blind date for don macclymont 58 which should up the prestige of prospective blind dates considerably judges for the contest were miss cornelia otis skinner scl performer and noted dramatist paul george a regular houseparty judge and al lentown photographer and eddie grady leader of the commanders judging began at 11:15 p.m and ended at about midnight with the crowning of the queen coming among all the confusion usually evi 1 dent at this semi-annual event in spite of the efforts of the junior class officers to calm the gathering the dance was attended by about 900 couples with the mu sic reported more danceable than most houseparty bands have supplied in the past dec orations were beautiful and me dieval in setting carrying off the knight's rendezvous theme very well the dance immediately followed the skinner performance presented by scl a breakfast sponsored by rhc topped off the evening setting teh scene for saturday's picnics bal game and the saturday night fra ternity parties sweet sue—miss sue alcock the newly-crowned queen of house party and her date don macclymont 58 pose for the birdie miss alcock a 19-year-old pennsylvanian was a blind-date and won out over three other finalists rare editions given library by honeyman a total of 3,953 rare books first edition manuscripts and other liter ary material has been given to le high university by mr and mrs robert b honeyman 20 of san juan gapistrano calif the collection valued at ap proximately 170,000 covers the fields of american and english literature bibliography the classics and the history of sci ence the gift to be known as the hon eyman collection will be housed in the university library according to a ruling of the board of trustees the significance of the honey man collection said librarian james d mack lies in the fact that here in one place may be found the earl iest editions of many of our most familiar works of creative genius the collection will be available to students included in the collection is an edition of pliny's historia na turalis printed in 1469 13 years after the printing of the guten berg bible other volumes date as far back as 1550 and 1590 other prized documents include the declaration of the franco -
