lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 42 bethlehem pa friday april 20 1356 un 6-0331 54 men begin campaign for various class offices led by 12 juniors 54 men will at tempt to gain positions as class offi j cers in elections to be held in three j weeks fourteen sophomores and 28 freshmen round out the total this year's aggregate is ten more than last year's total of 44 interest in the class of 59 caused the increase last year there were only 19 freshmen combin ed with 13 sophomores and 12 juniors campaigning already underway will continue through the elections which will be held may 11,12 and 14 during the elections however no campaiging will be allowed within 100 feet of the polling places most campaigning will be done in dorm sections fraternities and on bulletin boards polling booths will be located in our buildings according to al my ers 58 election committee chair man — drown hall lamberton hall packard lab and christmas-saucon hall members of alpha phi omega national service fraternity will op erate the four polling booths again this year as they have in the past according to myers polls will be open from 9 a.m to 4:30 p.m both friday may 11 and monday may 14 saturday may 12 they will be open only from 9 a.m to noon the ballots will be counted by arcadia asso ciates monday night after the booths close results will prob ably be known by the following day candidates for president of the class of 57 are john silinsh peter bond james watson george m lin coln jr and george rosenfeld treasurer robert m rosen peter johnson and alfred medovich sec retary robert mangus titus mj puck roy w wegen and jack ram say candidates for president of the class of 58 are jerome m edwards harry p biehl john c morgan h e jaenhe jr donald garaventi and john m hobby treasurer theodore widmayer richard f newkirk thomas cudde bach edward w hummers and william a sassman secretary john rousseaux william helfrich and donald a hofmann candidates for president of the houseparty pro gram were sent to all dates register ed coming to the spring weekend sent out by the university so as to familiarize the dates with what activities will take place over the weekend and stating the chaperone situation and where the responsibility lies for the houseparty conduct — with the student group the student and the date the letter is signed by dean by ron c hayes and includes a detail ed schedule of when specific events take place and end the text of the letter follows may we take this opportuni ty to express our pleasure that stage star in hp show cornelia otis skinner and her in ternationally famous one-woman show will be presented by the stu dent concerts-lectures series on friday of houseparty in grace hall at 8 p.m students and their dates will be admitted upon presentation of their id cards the april 27 performance will be made up of solo character sketches many of her own authorship these shows have been received very favorably in america canada and england with such notices by outstanding critics as cornelia otis skinner gets my vote as the most cornelia otis skinner steel foundation gives lehigh 75,000 grant i gram 01 o,uuu irom tne unitea states steel t oundation inc has been made to lehigh university the grant was part of a 1,000,000 gift dis tributed among more than 500 american colleges and universities president martin d whitaker stated that the grant will be used in the current building program of the university a new dormitory and the new university center in addition to capital grants amounting to 340,000 roger m blough , chairman of the board of trustees of the foundation said the 1956 pro i gram provides for 557,500 for oper ating grants 102,500 for general aid and 72,000 for graduate fellowships i as for the packer hall-dor mitory drive as whole 42 areas have been organized for person al solicitation the committees in each district were enlisted by local chairmen from prospects of their own choice the campaign originally aimed at a goal of 2,200,000 but since raised because of increasing costs is ex pected to be brought to a conclusion by alumni day of this year it is es timated that nearly 4,000 persons have contributed thus far monday is deadline to get hp rooms town and dorm men who have not yet signed up their dates for rooms for houseparty can do so on monday in the bamboo room b-lll of dravo house from 8 to 9 p.m there will be a penalty of 50 cents for late signing added to the original 4 cost making the total cost 4.50 any corrections or additional information for the room registration sheet should be made at this time this is also the only time during which refunds will be given less 50 cents for processing so net refunds wiu be 3.50 queen to star at hp formal nextweekend grace kelly may not be present in grace hall next friday night for the selection of the queen but lehigh is sure to give her a pretty fair amount of competition expected to be a greater drawing card at this hp than at any in the past the selection of a queen and her royal court will highlight the formal dance on april 27 according to philip t stromenger chair man of the queen selection committee a precedent will be set at this hp in the method of selection of her royal highness every effort has been made to heighten interest in the event which is the climax of the evening at most weekend formals stromenger said when queen-choosing time comes two knights will split the lower floor of grace hall with brown and white ribbon the pieces of silk will form a promenade along which seven beau ties will strut the seven wonders of pul chritude will be selected from 35 or 36 fraternity and residence hall nominations each group of greeks will be permitted to sub mit one fair lady to the contest and two or three dormitory groups will be allowed to enter their choice for queen to permit all at the grace rendez vous to see the best in beauty the seven semi-finalists will parade with their escorts to the bandstand where the names of the reigning beauty mid-semester pro claims 66 over half frosh what is believed to be a new low in the annals of valentine proba tion has been registered for the spring semester as a total of 696 fail ing hours were registered by 66 stu dents at the mid-semester warning period as is to be expected well over half the total of students who found themselves on pro via the pink slip routine are freshmen the class of 1959 con tributed 42 members to the list thirteen sophomores and 11 jun iors rounded out the list since no seniors were placed on pro bation the low amount of probation hours has been generally attributed to the lost week donated to the student calendar by the measles scare many members of the faculty did not send out valentines because of tests and work that was missed and was necessary for the compila tion of failing grades a change in the probation rules accounts for the major portion of the students that are not on pro the new regulations provide that any student who is failing nine or more thursday deadline set for yearbook pictures the deadline for returning senior picture proofs is thursday april 26 according to ned greenlee senior editor of the epitome these proofs are to be returned to the epitome office in drown hall a representative of merin studios will be in the yearbook office april 24-26 from 9-12 a.m and from 1-5:30 p.m there will be a penalty fee for not returning these proofs 15 chosen for honors study the first group of students has been selected by the honors council for participation in the recently ini tiated college honors program de signed to provide for advanced study at the undergraduate level phi sigma kappa dominates the group with one-third of the 15 men chosen being members of the frater nity to begin next fall the pro gram consists of a series of semi nars in each of the basic areas of human knowledge and the writing of a thesis listed under the general heading of creative concepts the seminars will deal with the areas of life sciences humanities physical sciences and social sciences the first seminar that in life sciences will be directed by
