lehigh university brown and white volume 67 — number 39 bethlehem pa friday april 13 1956 university 6-0331 17 measles cases no vacation seen since returning from the prolonged spring vacation 11 new cases of measles have sprung up on campus as reported by the health center according to dr ray e andrews director of the health center even if the number of cases were to develop into a new epidemic threat there would probably be no cancellation of classes andrews felt that if a serious measles situation re-occurred that the in fected men would be isolated in one dorm section or possibly fraternity house to stem the spread of the dis at the present time there doesn't seem to be much danger of a new threat breaking out according to of ficials at the center as most of the new cases sprang up on sunday night or monday and the infectious period for these people seems to have passed andrews felt these new cases resulted from contacts before coming back to school placing the danger period during the time they were home wild rumors circulating around the campus had placed the number of new cases on tuesday and wed nesday in the neighborhood of 20 which wasn't far from the one per cent necessary to close school the actual number of 11 is a long way from the necessary percentage and with the fewer number of cases each day it seems the isolation tac tics now being used are successful class petitions deadline tues arcadia has announced that the deadline for obtaining petitions for class elections has been extended to april 17 campaigning for elec tion will start april 18 on which date all candidates will meet in the arcadia room in drown hall the elections will be held on may 11 12 and 14 the reports on campaign expenses are due at 4 p.m may 14 in the arcadia of fice the following is a summary of the rules for the election which is to be held according to the regulations of the arcadia elections act 1 campaigning may begin at 8 p.m wednesday april 18 sand swamp sun lure 350 to dixie by george l beezer thanks to measles week a spe cial project of the florida chamber j of commerce dozens of lehigh men who had not planned vacations fled with delight to that semi-tropical state from their chilly northern resi-1 dences most of the approximately 350 lehigh students who travelled went to fort lauderdale al though others departed for can ada the west coast bermuda the british west indies cuba and the south-central area for a story on a student who travelled 8,000 miles in two weeks see p 4 in fort lauderdale alone there were more than 200 lehigh students who joined a mob of 14,000 college students most from the east and the midwest temperatures in fort lauder dale ranged from a comfortable 70 to the high eighties and the vacationing engineers basked beneath its rays from morning to dinner time sopping up vita min d and other substances with an accustomed leisure during the first vacation week the venice of america as lauder 7 dale is known was jammed with college students from the midwest it was surprising how few of th mid-westerners had ever heard of lehigh but her fame spread favor-j ably by the end of the second week the rowdiest of the students seemed to be from the university of student's new car wrecked in crash a 1956 sedan — with little over 2,000 miles registered — in which two lehigh students were returning to school following vacation was involved in a two-car accident earlyi sunday afternoon allan m rathbone 56 report ed that he was driving east on the pennsylvania turnpike when his car collided with another ve hicle which had pulled into his lane rathbone was accompanied by john e wright 57 and a bucknell ritter escapes serious injury in air tragedy at 7:15 p.m easter sunday a martin 404 rolled down the runway of the greater pittsburgh airport in perfect flying weather and eased into the air rising about 50 feet from the ground i seconds later it dipped plung ed to earth and left an after math of 22 dead among the 33 passengers and for tunately one of the survivors was dr hope t m ritter of the biol ogy department dr ritter was coming from jackson center miss where he attended a con dr ht m vention of alpha ritter jr epsilon delta a pre-med honorary and was enroute to allentown from pittsburgh in describing the crash he said the plane rolled down the runwajj and lifted near the end when sud 1 denly the nose dipped about 20 de-j grees he was in seat six on the left side where he could see the wing and said as far as he could tell there was nothing wrong with the engines and no fire visible he stated that nothing from the sound of the props would indicate that anything was amiss but something was definitely not normal about the takeoff from here events followed with terrifying rapidity dr rit ter observed the wing only 10 or 15 feet off the ground and sec onds later the wingtip scraped sending sparks flying from the 2 killed instantly in crash two lehigh students were instant ly killed march 30 when the autcn mobile in which they were riding crashed head-on into a tractor trailer on the outskirts of gaffneyj s.c on their way home for the re mainder of the spring vacation from new orleans the two victims were m peter ferngold brookline mass and c herman feldt wildwood n.j police theorized that ferngold apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his car and the auto veered into the path of the south-bound tractor trailer the cherokee county coro ner reported that tire marks indi cated the automobile crossed th highway shortly before the crash the truck driver was not serious ly hurt he told police that he was | traveling about 40 miles per hour at the time of the accident no speed was estimated for the car ferngold was majoring in business administration and was a member of the business society and the politi 7 | cal science assembly feldt was an i industrial engineering major both were 20-year-old juniors ferngold was a resident of leading roles in menotti's two operettas the telephone and the old maid and the thief to usher in the sounds weekend the highlight of the weekend will be a combined band and glee club concert saturday night at 8 p.m in grace hall marking the first time that the fused groups have performed on campus the program will include numbers ranging from a cole porter medley to moussorsky's powerful coronation scene from the opera boris goudonov each group will perform separately and also in combination among the glee club numbers will be brothers sing on by grieg mayari a puerto rican folk song and sound off a word war ii favorite included in the band works will be found r strauss's death and transfiguration finale stravinsky's berceuse and finale from the firebird and camarata's ■" — measles during the vacation to noti fy the health center of the date on which they contracted the sickness and when they recovered the information is needed in order to compile an accurate statistical record of the number of cases who were hit by the disease rules search fails to locate valentine pro today is valentines day but don't worry about it because there ain't no such animal as valentine pro bation according to the latest edi tion of the lehigh university pro cedures regulations and require ments lehigh's operating bible surprised brown and white reporters discovered that the animal was probaby inadver tently extinct when they search ed the new regulations wednes day night hoping to enlighten the students as to the penalties of receiving too many valen tines just to make sure that no amend ments had been passed since the new rules were published the b&w caled an authoritative faculty mem ber who preferred not to be identi fied who said this was a problem of the committee on standing of stu dents a faculty committee to the question of whether unwritten and unpublicized reg ulations could be enforced our informant replied yes they do not necessarily have to be published these new regulations which the b&w carefully reviewed list scho lastic probation disabilities of stu greeks face desperate shortage of chaperones fraternity petitions for house party due wednesday in mrs mora vec's office were all turned in on schedule or arrangements were made to have them completed on time confusion arose in the frater nities when it was suddenly dis covered that there was a desper ate shortage of social chaper ones faculty members were hurriedly paged and long distance calls went out to parents in a last ditch effort to beat the deadline the last minute entanglement occurred due to the long vacation and that house presi dents didn't learn of the deadline date until after they were home for the spring recess petitions for houseparty for resi dence halls were due
