lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 38 tuesday march 27,1956 lu bethlehem pa 30 cases of german measles forces extra week's vacation by art roth action taken to interdict real epidemic on campus an outbreak of german measles which threatened to develop into a general campus epidemic gave students an unprecedented extra week o spring vacation when the administration decided to suspend classes as o noon march 24 according to the statement by dean wray h congdon there will be no classes until 8 a.m april 9 after conferring with assistant health center director dr ray e andrews and with city health officer dr wilfred vogler the ad ministration decided that in order to break the incubation cycle it would be better to lose a week now than to let the epidemic run its course and have to lose two to three weeks with classes not being resumed for two weeks mid-semester reports will be postponed until april 13 the 13th is correct not the 14th as pre viously stated it has not yet been decided whether or not days will be added to the university calendar congdon said that the faculty has also been informed that there will be no classes for two weeks in the recollection of same faculty members this is the first time lehigh has ever closed down in the middle of an academic year because of dis ease however once in the 20's and once in the early 40's the opening of school was postponed a few days because of the prevalence of polio band glee club shine for sounds by dick gaintner highlighted by four numbers from the combined band and glee club the saturday night portion of lehigh sounds 1956 which will take place april 14 in grace hall will feature a program encompassing a wide range of musical numbers included in the musical agenda will be numbers by grieg r strauss stravinsky hoist rodgers and hart camarata and moussor sky two features of the program will be the new lehigh medley and a medley of cole porter songs by the combined band can't wait to get back dean issues regulations for houseparty incorporates most committee proposals the regulations governing spring houseparty were released friday by he office of the dean of committee's recommendations all down the line the regulations include instructions that all living groups must sub mit petitions for houseparty by wednesday april 11 the measles out break party all outsiders including alumni must have dates as recom mended by the student-faculty committee other areas covered in the list of instructions include chaperons who must be selected for each affair from among parents of students within he living group parents of dates or from among the faculty as usual resident chaperones will be appointed by the dean of students and will arrive at the living groups at 3 p.m friday couples are to be preferred as resident chaperons and it is expected that the husband will serve with the wife between 8 p.m and 8 a.m on friday and saturday nights cocktail parties will be allowed on friday and saturday at 6 p.m if properly petitioned for and approved all such activities including pic nics hay rides and private dances must be petitioned for by april 11 other general areas covered place the entire responsibility for all actions of the members of the living groups including compliance with the liquor code on the living group heads other areas including punishment for violators of the regulations were not covered by the list of regulations at this time the student-faculty committee recommended punishments such as sus pension for serious offenses such as drunken driving and for lesser of fenses such as violation of the liquor code with no harm resulting to others the loss of houseparty privileges for the living group for a year the official text of rules follows houseparty weekend begins officially at 4 p.m friday april 27 and closes at 5 p.m sunday april 29 1956 lady guests are not permitted in residence halls or fraternities before that time and they must leave the men's residences by 5 p.m sunday no social functions are allowed during the week of houseparty before the scheduled day and hour for official opening of activities this weekend is provided once each semester to enable lehigh students gram of social activities lehigh students without dates outside guests health authority offers advice advice to students concerning german or three-day measles as they are popularly called was giv en by dr ray e andrews assistant director of the health center headache general body aches stiff ness of the neck sore throat and a feeling of tiredness are the usual symptoms of this disease prior to the onset of the rash he stated one attack usually protects for life — that is to say about 90 per cent of the people who have had german measles be fore are immune the infective virus is usually spread by a droplet spray from the nose and throat such as exists in cough ing or sneezing the patient is usually sickest the day before the rash appears and two days after isolation of the patient need not be prolonged beyond one week since the patient will not pass the disease after the rash has faded and the fever subsided little or no treatment beyond rest and isolation is necessary in uncomplicated cases declared andrews he also warned that special care should be taken not to infect preg nant women for a woman who con tracts german measles during the first three months of her pregnancy runs a high risk of having her child born with congenital abnormalities of the 29 cases diagnosed as measles all but three have been sent home these three students lived too far away to be sent home by public conveyance and were confined to their living group filling in the history of the mea sles outbreak andrews said that the first case came in on feb 18 in line with the 14 to 21 day incubation period the next case appeared the last week in february after which they started to come in regularly at that time said the doc tor we should have broken up the close association in the dor mitories by taking the boys out of circulation at the first symp toms and kept all those suspect teal cancels all job interviews all interviews scheduled for next week have been cancelled in light of the cancelling of classes this week everett a teal director of placement and counseling services announced friday
