lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 36 bethlehem pa friday march 16 1956 un 6-0331 sro in packard for wald lecture by art roth speaking before a standing-room-only audience in packard lab auditor ium harvard's dr george wald got the co-operative lecture series off to a most auspicious start thursday evening with his talk on theories of the origin of life the creation of a living organism in the laboratory was viewed as a distinct possibility by dr wald who said it could come about by de veloping chains of protein mole cules which would have the abi lity to arrange themselves into forms possessing the properties of life " during the course of the evening the biologist also stated that it is highly probable that life in forms similar to that on earth exist on no less than 10 million-million planets of the universe a virus is not a liv ing organism but is as dead as a doornail stating the purpose of his lecture as to take the origin of life out of the realm of the unique by showing that under the special conditions we have on earth it became inevitable dr wald proceeded to do just that after filling in the historical and scientific background wald attacked directly the question of the origin of life on earth by saying the only view the scien tist can take is that life origin ated by spontaneous generation under conditions unfamiliar to us today but which existed mil lions of years ago he said that within the four or five billion years of the earth's life it would be reasonable to assume that it took about two billion years for the development of the first or ganism and another two billion for the whole organic evoltuion over the ages of time these or commanders elliot lawrence are hp bands with the billing of two equally famous bands the junior class has taken the first step to complete its plans for spring houseparty elliot lawrence and the com manders will share the spotlight while dancers share the floor at a knights rendezvous on april 29 lawrence rated by billboard magazine as the number one band in the land will give knights and their ladies a chance to sway on one floor of grace hall the command ers captained by eddie grady will sound off in their unique manner on the other level the two danceable bands were secured for this hp at some expense to the junior class and in anticipa tion of the usually-large turnout the billing of these bands is ex pected to attract an even greater crowd than in the past when one name band and one mediocre musi cal group were hired according to a junior class representative 2 shows open sounds weekend a weekend for parents has been planned for april 13-15 the pro gram lehigh sounds 1956 is being sponsored by the music department in cooperation with the cleaver ser ies included in the diversified program are two musical shows a buffet dinner a combined band-glee club concert a dance and an organ recital the combined band and glee club concert to be held on saturday night will mark the first time the two groups have performed togetheij on the lehigh campus the musical weekend will open with two musical shows — menotti's the telephone and the old maid and the thief — both on friday evening and saturday afternoon a buffet dinner will be held in grace hall following the saturday after noon perofrmance on saturday evening the combined band and glee club will present a program of diver sified music immediately fol lowing the combined concert a dance will be held in grace hall with music being supplied by the collegians all profits made will be used to help support lehigh musical organi zations a large part will be used tq support the annual band and glee club camp a vital cog in the training of both organizations a drawing will be held on wed nesday march 21 to determine the order for ticket sales ticket prices for the operetta are main floor 1.75 first balcony 1.50 second bal cony 1.25 the price of the buffet dinner is 1.75 per plate featured in the operetta will be outside soloists including several top-notch performers the operettas are burlesque comedies which have been re ceived well on broadway and on the road menotti the writer of the operet tas has been commissioned by nbo for his fine compositions sound-off—committee heads planning lehigh sounds 1956 a parents weekend planned for april 13-15 to be sponsored by the music department in cooperation with the cleaver series these men along with prof schempf seated second from right are the driving force behind the diversified program scheduled to be pre sented in place of the cancelled music festival comical twelfth night staged tonight by m&c mustard and cheese will present j a streamlined version of shakes peare's twelfth night at 8 p.m tonight in the broughal junior high auditorium prof h barrett davis direc tor has cut the original main plot to play up the comic situa tions of mistaken identity in the sub-plot thereby making it move faster the story revolves around viola played by helen mcshane and her brother an identical twin sebastian played by mike driscoll the major comic characters are sir toby belch characteriz ed by robert o'brien and his companion sir andrew ague cheek on whom he sponges is played by john thompson maria merle letowt and fabian played by bob pierson help toby and andrew cook up nefarious pranks to play on malvolio a haughty steward played by gil mos-j kowitz the above mentioned girls along with rose marie navarro who will portray olivia will be making their second appearance in m&c presen tations del kennedy will play orsino the dinner dixie frolic on tap for weekend by nick lapara where the lehighs rocky rapids . . ." this traditional scene will ring with the laughter of lehigh students relaxing as the extensive planning of ifc is climaxed tonight and tomorrow in a series of exciting events ushering in the annual ifc frolic tonight will be exchange dinners among the fraternities four of them playing hosts to an assemblage of officers from all houses kappa alpha society will be host to the presidents of every house en tertaining them with a cocktail party before dinner and following the meal with a discussion delta tau delta will have the treasurers for guests theta chi the stewards and delta sigma phi the rushing chairmen these three affairs will include dinner and discussion sessions in keeping with the exchange policy each house will send 10 rep resentatives to another fraternity along the greek way guesting a similar number masonic temple will echo to the pleasant hubub of 303 new pledges at atending ifc's perennial banquet tonight at 6:15 while those ter-r-rible gentlemen the pledgernasters keep watch over their wards norman l gasswint president of ifc will perform toastmaster du ties guests at the affair will be chaplain raymond a fuessle who will deliver the invocation dr e kenneth smiley university vice president dr charles a seidle di rector of admissions and deans john d leith wray h congdon and byron c hayes dean hayeq will speak on fraternity life and scholarship the main speaker of the night will be harold jacobsen of the national inter-fraternity confer ence jacobsen who is also executive secretary of sigma phi will explain to the pledges how to take best advantage of fraternity life also speaking will be dr w ap pleton aiken advisor to ifc who will discourse on the opportunities for achieving a rounded education at liigh rather than a mere techni l's training omorrow afternoon at two ifo ikend festivities begin in earnest h the bang-out rocking dixieland of the spring street stompers the stompers will present their iazz un richard maltby wagner wins debate award representing lehigh's honorary debate society delta omicron theta harvey wagner 57 won a citation of distinction at the 11th annual boston university national invita tional debate tournament the award was made for de monstrating outstanding skill in the presentation and organiza tion of his case in the tourney a citation and certificate was presented to wagner by the presi dent of boston university dr har old case registration open for reading clinic registration for the fourth six week session of the reading and study clinic is now open it will continue through april 9 with the course starting on april 11 regis trations at the reading and studjj clinic office in the
