lehigh university brown and white volume 67 number 31 tuesday feb 28 1956 lu bethlehem pa mil queen honors to dianne mellon dianne mellon of centenary junior college was selected to reign over the rotc cadets annual military ball saturday night in grace hall escorted to her throne by cadets david s bailie 56 and daniel p cannon 56 between two ranks of cadets from scabbard and blade and the arnold air society composing an honor guard she was pre sented a bouquet of roses by robert c mcgrory 56 and richard j cogswell 56 mcgrory is commanding officer of the air cadets and cogswell commands the army cadets guest of boyer h l royal 56 her royal highness was ensconced on the throne decorated by court attendants marilyn welch of ursinus col lege mimi zerbe of perm hall carolyn heiman of the university of pennsylvania and joan benson of cedar crest college miss welch date of peter a thomas 59 was escorted to the throne by robert a carrasquillo 56 miss zerbe date of henry a phillips 59 was escorted by wayne a diehl 56 __ miss heiman date of mcgrory by eugene r muntean 56 and miss benson date of robert w brooks 57 by del kennedy 56 george sommers and his or chestra provided the musical setting for the dancing intermission time was consumed by drill exhibitions by pershing ri fles and the sabre society john c lowe 57 commanded the rifles group and william b hillegas 56 guided the sabre society's perform ers chaperones for the evening were col and mrs albert c molter col and mrs earl j berryhill dr and mrs harold p thomas and dean and mrs wray 11 congdon the chaperones chose the queen and her court from 12 candidates who had been picked by four cadets among the girls at the dance quite a mellon—of the honey-dew variety no doubt is mil ball queen diane mellon center of centenary college and her court com posed of marilyn welch mimi zerbe carolyn heiman and joan benson the girls are the ununiformed ones dianne mellon center building behind schedule construction of the new residence hall and the phi sigma kappa house is proceeding on schedule construc tion on the new university center is still behind schedule but the time deficit is being made up according to the latest progress report from superintendent of buildings and grounds litzenberger work has been started on the last floor of the new residence hall which is scheduled for completion on aug 1 with some help from the weather it will be completed on time according to litzenberger the concrete foundation of the phi sigma kappa house is 90 per cent finished and will be completed within the next 10 days the portion damaged in january's fatal accident has been repaired and construction should be finished by the middle of november bad weather has hindered prog ress on the university center with good weather construction may be completed on schedule file by monday for s s test postmark deadline for the next selective service college qualifica tion test has been set at monday march 5 lehigh is one of the testing cen ters for the april 19 examination application forms and other infor mation can be secured from local boards 113 and 114 bethlehem trust bldg at broad and main sts segregation issues probed by paul weinberg the controversy over freshman segregation mulled over by students and administrators for nearly a year was temporarily settled at an rhc faculty meeting which formally adopted a motion to separate the freshman class into dravo richards and drinker houses effective sep tember 1956 in the past the system of in tegrated dormitories has pre vailed with moderate success and normal scholastic short comings which skeptics were prone to accept as inevitable last fall however a new idea matured that of establishing an all freshman dormitory in the hope that this scheme would benefit incoming students and help them to escape the ills prevalent in the old system at that time dean leith in ex pressing doubts about segregation commented that the atmosphere in dravo would prolong a period of in fancy for another year however since the end of the fall semester and the release of university averages there has been marked interest in the se gregation system this interest prompted a joint meeting to determine a future course of action to remain in the status quo state or to segregate the entire incoming freshman class it is interesting to note that at this session dean leith completely changed his point of view with ref erence to his period of infancy statement to clarify the basic issues for and against the new action on segregation the brown and white interviewed certain key individuals for their reactions and criticisms tom morgan president of rhc an advocate of the separation scheme claims it leads to a quickening of the maturing process in each freshman social equality is pronounced he maintains as each first year man starts off on the same footing with no upperclassman seniority to influence his decisions frosh respect the rights and cri ticisms of each other far quicker than those of older members to whom they are bound seniority wise morgan added segregation provides for a lasting congeniality which eventually leads to pro nounced attitudes toward citizen ship the rhc prexy claimed there has been less damage in dravo during the last semester than under the integrated system 30 fraternities add 303 frosh to ranks the greeks are 303 stronger as a result of 519 bids offered to 345 rush ees nearly identical with last year's figures of 300 of the 376 rushees accepting bids from an offering of 517 bids this year's rushing season brought an innovation in the gentleman's bid to rushees on scholastic pro who were unable to pledge for the first time in the greek's history a few frosh on probation were offered bids in spite of the fact they had to be turned down to show the houses interest in the man one excited frosh came looking for two invitations but upon opening his envelope found it empty by mistake there were two envelopes with his name written across it one empty the other with his two expected bids in the past five years the greatest number of bids was issued in 1953 when 605 invitations were distributed and date for the taking of their senior pictures for the 57 epitome greenlee said that scheduling for the pictures has been in progress since registration and all f 57 j 57 o 57 and f 58 graduates must contact the epi tome office in drown hall and set a date for their picture if they have not already done so senior pictures will be taken dur ing the week of march 12 those stu dents who have failed to schedule a picture appointment should contact either dick eckhart or keith plows at un 6-7923 before friday butterfield dies retired in 1944 thomas e butterfield sr emeri tus professor of heat power engi neering died saturday morning at the nightingale nursing home al lentown he was 82 he became a faculty member in 1912 and except for a leave of absence during world war i served continuously until 1944 a graduate of rensselaer poly technic institute and stevens insti tute of technology prof butterfield was instrumental in organizing the engineers club of the lehigh valley he
