leith preston parr and prof lawrence whitcomb visited wednesday's arcadia meet ing thee first two upon invitation and the latter pair in the capacity of faculty advisors i consider it both an honor and a privilege to work with ar cadia and lehigh whitcomb de clared the advisor said he would try to do his job well even though it would mean a lot of work parr seconded his co-advisor's re mark adding that he would look to his new job with particular interest most arcadians are new at their posts just as we are and we will be silving problems together parr continued a former faculty advisor to cy anide prof whitcomb was asked to will the position of advisor after it was voted to request his services at last wednesday's meeting the professor of geology has acted as an advisor to the freshman cab inet since its establishment a mem ber of omicron delta kappa sen nior leadership honorary he has al so served as an advisor to alpha phi omega parr served for one year on ar cadia while he was an undergrad uate here as president of the dormitory council the assistant director of the institute of re search was appointed a solon by virtue of his office an advisor to town council parr is also a member of omicron delta kappa senior leadership honorary deans faculty advisors and mem bers of aacrdia's executive commit tee attended the first of a series of luncheons at lamberton hall yes terday the meals are intended to further a better understanding and facilitate communications between arcadians and the administration dean machine flips lid gives 4 short pro term dean i b machine usually impartial in his dealings with stu dents in a fit of indigestion has unfairly placed four men on proba tion they are john n butler 58 william h bux,'s7 joseph w cala tabianco 56 and robert j can ning 58 these facts were unearthed by a brown and white reporter wed nesday in an interview with reg istrar james a wagner registrar wagner made no bones about it — the dean was dead wrong and it was only through a painstaking investigation of the dean's lunch that the registrar uncovered the serious error thru the efforts of the registrar's office the men have been removed from the pro list here is wagner's explanation of the dean's error after grades were turned over to the registrar several listings were made on the basis of cumu lative average grades for the fall semester were obtained from class cards old average cards including fall semester average cards were sorted to get the total number of hours at tempted and corresponding quality points grades fall semester cards and old cards were added on a calculator when printed the new total was auto matically punched on the cards thus bringing standing up to date but due to the new probation and drop regulations requiring a student to maintain a certain cu mulative average which becomes higher depending on the student's class combined with the old pro rules there were eight times as many possibilities which would de termine whether or not a student was on pro because of the complexity of de termining this cards were sent to the ibm office in allentown there they were sorted when the registrar's office got them back those cards listing stu dents with better than 1.5 cumula tive averages as high as is needed up to parr new arcadia advisors preston parr of the institute of research and prof lawrence selection of a queen and two precision drill exhibitions will be the outstanding features of the annual military ball tomorrow night from 9 to 1 in grace hall formally dubbed coed colonel the queen will be commissioned an honorary colonel for the dance and receive a symbol of her rank along with flowers for herself and her court she will be chosen by the dance entertainment committee headed by john previty 56 drill exhibitions will be given during intermission by the pershing rifles drill team and the air force crack drill team dress for the ball will be formal with the men wearing either their uniforms or tuxedos an added at traction will be the appearance of regular army members of the staff wearing the new army formal uni form tickets for the dance have been on sale in all military and anything that might present a senior charged after chase richard j haughwout 56 was arrested on a charge of drunken driving at 2 a.m monday after lead ing police sgt edward donaher on a merry chase across to hill-to-hil bridge haughwout was released nine hours later under 300 bail donaher alleges that he was forced to the side of the bridge by the zig-zag manner of haugh wout's car he then chased the student several blocks before forcing him to stop donaher then summoned officers jack burk and russell haw who took the student to dr alexander maysels for a sobriety test the po lice claim that he failed the examin ation and was consequently locked up in default of bail a hearing will be held before alderman john gombosi at an un determined date 2,500 apply for 60 class inquiries rise by bur sienkiewicz the number of inquiries from prospective freshmen for lehigh's class of 1960 is already far higher than in previous years according to a statement released to the brown and white by dr charlese . seidle director of admissions an early estimate shows that approximately 2,000 more inquiries have been received than had been for the class of 1959 at this time last year one of the reasons for this rise advanced by dr seidle was that this year we have made a more strenuous effort than ever before to persuade boys to file applications early current tabulation shows that al most 400 more freshman applications have been received than at the same time last year the grand total shows 2,500 applications for the col leges of arts and science business administration and engineering as well as the combined five-year two aegree arts and engineering pro gram the most significant fact lies in the increase of applications for the college of arts and science as well as the five-year program although the exact figues and breakdown for the three colleges will not be released until later in the semester the admissions office reported that the arts and science applications have taken a large jump the first major increase in the arts enrollment occurred last year when approximately 30 more stu dents were admitted to the college the freshman class at lehigh is approximately 700 students with the largest number in the college of engineering dr seidle com mented however an increasing number of students have expressed an in terest in the college of arts and science and in the combined liberal arts and engineering program which provides opportunity for greater breadth than is possible in the four-year engineering program he continued the application deadline is april 1 while the last day for scholarship applications will be march 1 applications for the class of library given 1,000 donation from industry in recognition of the fine service of the university library to indus-7 try a 1,000 gift was recently pre-t sented to the library by air prod ucts inc this is the first grant of its kind made by industry to the library the air products gift came as a complete surprise to us and naturally we are quite pleased stated james d mack librarian mr mack explained that the ma jor service rendered by the library to industry is the loaning of books to various firms and the answering of technical questions we lend books to government agencies and to industry and we ex pect to continue these services continued mack he further stated that he be lieved the 1,000 gift would be used to purchase literature in the physical science field air products inc which manufac tures generating equipment for ox ygen and other industrial gases has for the past three years maintained two undergraduate scholarships of 1,500 each at lehigh fall hall—pictured above is one dorm on campus not to come through with a drop in scholastic achievement this year due mainly of
