lehigh university brown and white volume 67 — number 29 bethleltem pa tuesday february 21 1956 university 6-0331 7 freshman sections 3 fraternities on pro seven sections of dravo house the all-freshman residence hall and three fraternities found themselves on scholastic probation as a result of their fall semester averages according to the living group averages re leased by frederick e ressler assistant registrar leonard hall for the seventh straight semester topped all the groups with an average of 2.835 delta chi was the leading fraternity with a mark of 2.443 the freshman sections on probation include d-3 d-4 b-2 b-4 a-2 d-l and a-l two other freshman sections barely missed the list of marks below 1.8 they are c-l and c-2 which missed by 02 and 017 three fraternities alpha chi rho psi upsilon and sigma phi fell below the off-pro line . the all-university average fell to the lowest point since the spring of 1953 the entire university median is 2.004 compared to 2.020 a year ago the previous low following the average trend it shows that the entire university schol arship is becoming poorer each year traditionally spring semester ranks higher than the fall period but even that average has been heading for an all-time low in the spring of 1953 the average was 2.201 in the fall of 1954 the mark of the entire university fell to 2.0612 during the following spring the average rose to 2.168-and then-fell again to 2.020 in the fall last spring the university mark waa 2.109 the lat ~~~ ter is a drop of almost an entire point from the spring of 1953 as for the senior class 2^348 the junior class 2.103 the all fraternity 2.084 the entire university the all town 1.9841 the all non-fraternity dorm 1.9650 all dorm 1.9646 all fraternity 1.958 and the sophomore and freshman classes 1.876 and 1.790 all dropped except one from the previous fall averages the only average of the en tire group to rise was that of the junior class which boosted its mark from 2.094 in the fall semester of 1954 seven fraternities were in the top 10 of the list while the other three were comprised of leonard hall tempo ii and price hall the most significant fact is the seven sections of dravo that landed on probation this is the first year for an all-frosh dorm and it is be ing done on an experimental basis of the 16 sections of the fresh man residence hall nine made it off pro however of those nine two just climbed over the mark | and the highest section ranked 16 the next two sections of dravo ranked 24 and 26 of the three fraternities on pro each has been skirting the low rank ing for some years of the three sigma phi has been the highest in the past few semesters with a 2.046 average last spring last fall alpha chi rho landed a 1.962 average while psi u missed pro with a 1.818 and sigma phi went on pro with a 1.656 mark a study shows that no three other houses have heen such borderline cases for the past five semesters leonard hall the perennial head of the list dropped from its average of last fall with a median of 2.835 this year it dropped from a median pf 2.868 last fall the leading fraternity a year ago was tau delta phi with an average of 2.608 this fall they dropped to second in the fraternity list and fourth in the living group averages with 2,394 last fall they had been second among living groups delta chi moved up to second among living groups and first among the fraternities with a dry rush—the rushing scene above snapped saturday afternoon at the pi lambda fraternity house is typical of rushing activities at the other 29 houses rushing officially ends friday when freshmen may pick up their bids in drown hall between 1 and 5 p.m weekend rushing activities included dates with girls from neighboring colleges the wrestling match in grace hall and bands at many houses another feature was ice cold birch beer and ginger ale came abandoned in favor of night shakespeare's twelfth night has been substituted for the came mu tiny court martial by mustard and cheese for presentation on monte carlo weekend mustard and cheese's executive committee decided that the came mutiny court martial was not a wise choice for the festive occasion of ifc weekend it being a heavy psychological drama with no ac tion it decided unanimously to substitute twelfth night which m&c says is more in keeping ) with the weekend twelfth night is an uproarious farce filled with exciting action it blends the elements of bedroom comedy with slapstick and is popu lated with an outrageous group of zany characters sir toby belch's drunken revelry he named for a particular habit of his sir andrew aguecheek a man about town and maria the eliza bethian counterpart of marilyn monroe with the character of the poor misunderstood malvolio who is a complete egotistical bore not to mention an occasional love affair thrown in for tlta interest of the ro mantically inclined all add up to a performance such as m&c has never before attempted also in the proceedings one will find feste the clown some what like george gobei in char acter • helen mcshane ' stars as viola while viola's twin brother sebas scofflaws pay up rueter is pleased l would like to thank the ad ministration and the student body for their cooperation in enabling the police department to eliminate an unnecessary and time consuming task bethlehem chief of police raymond r reuter said tuesday congratulations are due dean wray h congdon for his admin istrative action and the brown and white for informing the students continued chief rueter rueter's remarks were prompted by the quick action of students in settling unpaid traffic fines during the recent crackdown on traffic scofflaws in bethlehem the chief termed the response of the students terrific a letter containing the names of 31 students who had committed a total of 37 traffic violations was sent queen selection drill exhibition to highlight ball selection of the queen and her court will highlight the annual mil itary ball in grace hall saturday dancing to the music of george sommers will be from 9 to 1 another feature of the ball will be crack drill exhibitions during intermission by the pershing ri : fles drill team and the air force crack drill team the sabre society a new air force organization will join scabbard and blade arnold air and pershing ri les in sponsoring the formal dance uniforms with white shirts and black bow ties and tuxedos are in order for the affair chaperons will be dean wray h congdon dr and mrs harold p thomas col and mrs earl j berry hill arid col and mrs albert c molter ! richard j cogswell of westfieldj n j will serve as general chairman of the dance maj john a patterson is faculty adviser honors plan open to engs the college honors program is open to all qualified engineering students according to action taken at last monday's faculty meeting the new ruling permits par ticipation in the college honors program by allowing accepted ap plicants to substitute successfully completed honors seminars a gainst any of the alternate courses , of the general study requirements toward an engineering degree substitution shall be hour for hour up to a maximum of 12 credit hours fritz to make biggest test by pete burdash yesterday marked the arrival of the largest single specimen to enter the fritz engineering lab for testing purposes ~. arriving truck from potts . town a.39-ton concrete beam entered the lab early yesterday morning the massive 70-foot beam was originally destined to arrive on campus last friday but foul weather causing icy roads hindered the transfer of the beam by truck the beam will undergo a series of static tests on the lab's switzerland manufactured repeated-load equip ment the tests will begin with pre liminary load tests and end with the final destruction of the beam about a week later following these tests a similar 55 foot concrete beam will arrive at the lab where it will be subjected to tests by the unique repeated-load machines both tests are being run for concrete products of america j although the tests on the two concrete beams will not necessi tate the use of the 5,000,000 lb capacity testing machine the universal machine has been used extensively since the labora tory's dedication last october of approximately 12 compression tests four were of major caliber the major tests were made on tim ber specimens and concrete cylin ders with 4,840,000 lbs being the largest single load ' applied by the machine this exertion was made during a compression test on a block of wood similar to the specimen used for the dedication test other compression tests include the use.of two 36-foot lengths of pre fabricated steel columns and similar smaller sections for tests the tests performed by the machine have been largely in conjunction with industry such firms as republic aviation bell telephone and bethlehem steel have run tests in fritz lab the baldwin-lima-hamilton corp manufacturer and erectors of the machine have had their engi neers adjusting and making modifi world premiere james burke trumpet soloist with the band of america and the goldman band presented a world premiere of his recent composition the magic trumpet in an appearance sunday at the lehigh band's winter concert in grace hall also featured in the performance was aaron's copland's a lincoln portrait narrated by
