lehigh university brown and white volume 67—numer 25 tuesday january 17,1956 university 6-0331 500 protest hp change in march on prexy's home stirred by dean byron c hayes sweeping revision of houseparty regu lations which stipulate that a hp participant must pay for all hp func tions if he wishes to attend any one over 500 aroused students joined forces last friday night and staged a march on the president's house in protest a series of phone calls originating in the sayre park area about 7 p.m gathered a sizable group of students who began the march down south mountain attracting scores of sympathizers along the twisting campus route to the home of president whitaker continuing down the campus the aggregation trouped past the resi dence halls where the move gained additional strength dorm lights dimmed and student cries protesting the dean's action grew louder chants of down with dean hayes and it's a hayes party — not a houseparty echoed around the campus as a motorcade began to form behind the parading students flashing lights and the sounding of horns from the stream of cars out of sayre park added to the growing display of student feeling when the crowd reached the president's home a young beth lehem boy was prompted by the students to go up on the porch and ring the doorbell the maid indicated that the president was not at home and with no ap parent response from the house the phalanx of students proceed ed to march along the road be low packer and around the li brary to grace hall as the mass meeting on lower campus moved en masse to grace hall four pieces of bethlehem fire fighting apparatus from the victory station arrived on the scene amid mixed cheers and boos from the stu dents who hurried to their new lo cation fearing a drenching in the freezing weather bethlehem fire department offi cials reported that a call was receiv ed at the fire alarm headquarters stating that the students were plan ning to set fire to the president's home two trucks and two squad cars answered the call but they soon returned to their station when it was realized that the call was a false alarm houseparty theme—some of the several hundred protesting stu dents visually expressing their sentiments as they stood before president whitaker's house friday 13 they apparently were disturbed by hayes change of rules governing houseparty cease pranks arcadia urges to the student body arcadia the student council urges the entire student body to refrain from any further demonstrations or disorderly conduct such as occured this past weekend wilful destruc tion of university property is not the way to better student-adminis tration relations any additional evidence of poor conduct will not be in the best in terests of the students as the ad ministration will have no other al ternative than to take drastic meas ures arcadia b&w to appear again feb 10 with this issue the brown and white ceases publication until feb 10 notices and copy for next issue will be accepted until wednesday feb 8 next semester's b&w staff members are required to report feb 8 at 4 p.m roth rosenberg editors arthur j roth 56 and arnold h rosenberg 57 have been appointed by the bo'afd of publications as edi tors of the brown and white and the i epitome respectively for the spring semester roth begins his third semes ter at the helm of the student newspaper while rosenberg was the managing editor of the yearbook during the fall mahlon b simon 57 john r gaintner 58 and robert h gorin 56 will fill the remaining three slots on the editorial board of the brown and white simon being re appointed to the managing editor ship gaintner taking over the posi tion of editorial director formerly held by bill leclere 58 and gorin becoming business manager gaint ner was previously desk editor while gorin served as financial manager leclere steps into the news edi tor's post for the next four months an assistant news editor is to be named ray farkas 57 becomes desk editor after a semester as sports editor filling the vacated spot on the sports desk is robert e bollinger 58 bollinger moves up from his fall semester post as assistant sports editor assist ing him will be john m mim naugh 58 mimnaugh served as news editor previously on the business side of the news paper robert m rosen 57 takes over as financial manager while albert e enoch 57 and william j scarlett 58 were reappointed local ad manager and national ad mana ger respectively donald l carr 58 will assist enoch circulation of the semi-weekly paper will be in the hands of james f kelly 56 kelly last semester gained experience as the assistant circulation chief arnold rosenberg arthur roth dean calls leaders to policy conference by art roth a meeting of student leaders members of the faculty and the adminis tration has been called for thursday evening to discuss what is to be done to alleviate the present dissatisfaction of the students with the policies of the administration as evidenced by friday night's demonstration in a telephone interview with dean wray congdon he stated that any action taken against students for friday's incident depends a good deal on developments from now on i don't have all the informa tion yet but i am working on it — trying to find out who is respon sible and for what however when first asked about the dissatisfaction as evidenced by friday's incident there was a long pause and then congdon said what incident he was informed that the brown and white was talking about the demonstration of several hundred students reported by both the al lentown and bethlehem papers asked to comment on the houseparty edict the dean replied there was no edict well then said your reporter on the letter stating changes in houseparty rules signed by dean byron c hayes there have been no changes these rules have existed for 20 years all that is be ing done now is to implement them said congdon when asked whether the provision in the letter making all students who wished to attend houseparty buy an all-inclusive ticket was a change the dean replied that we were getting into details now and that he didn't want to debate them over the phone after calling president whitaker at his residence and finding that he was not at home the brown and white contacted vice-president smiley with hopes of getting a statement he was asked whether he could give the b&w a statement about the edict issued by the dean and also about what is going to be done to alleviate the present dissat isfaction of the students with the administration policies smiley said that he could not give such a statement over the phone for it assumes several premises which i cannot go along with your re prexy appoints lecture group pledges 1500 president martin d whitaker an nounced today the appointment of three faculty members and two stu dents to an interim cooperative lec ture series committee the committee will serve as a sponsoring and coordinating 1 agency for the purpose of bring ing to the campus skilled lectur ! ers of academic and intellectual distinction and integrity named to the committee were preston parr assistant director of the institute of research dr adolf grunbaum professor of philosophy joseph b mcfadden associate pro fessor of journalism lesley h browder jr arts 57 and john m erdman e.p 57 their appointment was the result of an inquiry conducted throughout the campus in november which pro duced considerable response from student organizations and faculty members in establishing the lecture ser ies president whitaker empha sized its cooperative nature he stated that the program was in ; terim in the sense that its con tinued success must rest ulti mately on the cooperation fi nancial and otherwise of all in terested persons in the universi ty to encourage this kind of coopera tion the president declared that he i would match total funds contributed by campus groups and individuals to j the extent of 1,500 dr whitaker added that he would watch with much interest the char faculty to vote on 2.0 car use rule students with a cumulative aver age below 2.0 will not be permitted to possess and operate motor ve hicles at lehigh next year if pro posed modifications of the motor vehicle regulations are approved at the faculty meeting feb 6 to have a car students would have to attain sophomore aca demic standing to have a cumu lative average of 2.0 or better to present satisfactory evidence of adequate insurance coverage and an unencumbered driving license a driver's permit issued upon this basis would be valid only for motor vehicles which had been registered with the superintendent of build ings and grounds which displayed the registration sticker at all times permission to have and operate the vehicle would be revoked for the following reasons scholastic probation or cumulative average be low 2.0 inadequate insurance cover age reckless driving speeding or other serious traffic violations vio lation of campus parking regula tions as issued by the superinten dent of buildings and grounds other evidences of irresponsibility or poor citizenship in some instances the require ments of sophomore standing and a 2.0 average might be waived for commuting students upon application to the dean of students such an application would have to be supported by a letter from the applicants par ent or guardian certifying the necessity of using a car arcadia did not recommend this plan to the administration as was indicated to the faculty it made no recommendation on a scholastic ba sis but did list a scholastic require ment among its seven possible park ing solutions to be explored by the faculty and administration these seven recommendations for consideration were forwarded to the administration by arcadia but ar cadia received no further word on the matter and was stunned to learn that its endorsement was being at tached to the 2.0 average rule com mented
