lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 19 tuesday december 6 1955 lehigh university bethlehem pa m&c's staging of henry iv job well done by john mimnaugh entertainment unusual for le high university was presented fri day and saturday nights by mustard and cheese in the broughal jr high school auditorium william shakes peares henry iv part i proved to be a welcome relief from the regular fare of dramatic offerings the play was presented in modern shakespearean form that is different platform lev els and lighting effects were used rather than elaborate scenery more extravagant how ever were the costumes obtain ed from the producers of the original broadway run and valued at over 25,000 alternating in the part of falstaff the1 comic lead were robert o'brian on friday and arthur anderman on saturday both men did creditable jobs although your critic preferred anderman's interpretation of the role by far the star of the production was delmont kennedy as prince hal kennedy should be singled out as keeping the audience's attention during the few moments when the production lagged as king henry and as hotspur newton kinsey and george kantra are also to be con gratulated on fine performances on the whole bravo to prof h barrett davis and his men for a fine evening's entertainment and a glimpse into the court life of merry england — a job well done at the pub down at the boar's head inn we find falstaff listening to the future henry v at the left are several performers hanging on oi over the keg the tiered stage and stark sets are typical in this modern shakespearean production k advance arts pre-registration students in the college of arts and science who have not yet com pleted pre-registration will be grant ed until 3:30 tomorrow to finish will offer magnificat sunday magnificat anima mea dominumy glee club will commence the singinjg the annual christmas vesper service along with the hunter college gl ensemble the lehigh singers wijl music the hunter college womeij their talents in several selections ai " intoned by the male voices of the g of samuel scheldt's magnificat at i sunday at 4 p,m in packer church lee club a brass choir and a string 1 present a program of christmas i , from new york city will display \ nd will combine with the glee club t to offer the major work this will be the second time that this work has been given in the united states last saturday the glee club traveled to hunter to pre sent a combined concert in which the magnificat was sung for the first time in this country ; the magnificat contains the words spoken by the virgin mary upon the annunciation that she was to be the mother of christ they are contained in the first chapter of st luke verses 26 to 38 generally presented in the ■vesper service of the roman catholic church or in the eve \ mng office of the anglican church the magnificat will be sung in latin as transcribed by i prof william b schempf of the music department schempf drew this particular s work from a collection of sacred concertos published only with indi vidual part books in 1662 copies of this publication exist in only two or three libraries in the world he gillespie at the sophomore snowball saturday night class officers said it was a better turnout than was expected although a complete financial report has not been prepared yet harold rowe chairman of the snowball committee be lieves that the dance was fi nancially successful one of the highlights of the dance was the remarkable performance of the charleston by dr w appleton aiken of the history department chaperones for the dance were dr and mrs aiken prof and mrs robert a battis mr and mrs paul j franz and mr and mrs philip b woodroofe dr martin d whitaker also attended the affair the couples who attended the dance were impressed by the decor ations which consisted of a false ceiling of multi-colored stars and a snowman the refreshments for the evening were soda and cookies from 10:30 to 11 p.m wlrn broadcast a remote pick-up of the dance at the close of the evening the orchestra featured several selec tions of christmas music in keeping with the winter motif 344,967 scholarship endowment established lehigh has received 344,967 to establish an endowment fund for schol arships for poor and deserving students through a bequest of the late mrs mary haydon hansen it was announced saturday by elmer w glick university treasurer glick said the university's trustees have designated this endowment as the james clark haydon scholarship fund a memorial to mrs hansen's father who was a close associate of several lehigh alumni and trustees the first award will be made from the income of the new endowment fund next september recipients of the tuition award will be selected by the university's committee on scholarships and loans the scholarship once awarded may continue in force for the period of the student's residence at lehigh its renewal will be subject to
