lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 16 friday november 18 1955 lehigh university bethlehem pa 91st lehigh-lafayette contest sees big brown as favorite austie short bill doremus bruno pagnani bob naylor dan nolan walt pijawka alex maslowsky pete johnson pete williams dick pennell dick carney game won't be played if history repeats itself by joe varilla it wouid be a major catastrophe if one of the teams decided to walk off the field in tomorrow's ninety-first meeting between lehigh and la fayette it happened before and it could happen again in 1885 lehigh's center was disqualified for butting a lafayatte player and the lehigh team said if that decision remains we dont and they didn't up to that time there had been no score so lafayette was awarded the game by a 6-0 forfeit lehigh didn't think much of the referee's rulings in those early years for in the following year they again walked off in defiance of an official's decision although it is the general impression that the series between the inhabi tants of the south mountain and the men from easton is unbroken a check of the records shows that in 1896 no game was played a ques tion of eligibility forced the one year break in the long rivalry of the ninety games played between the two teams in sev enty years lehigh has won 30 lost 57 and tied 3 two games were played in each year from 1384 when the series be gan until 1901 and also in the years 1943 and 1944 the year 1891 saw three games contested hair-hungry easton and bethlehem barbers prob ably petitioned for the termination of this practice as bald undergrads became the rule the greatest margin of victory in leckonhy has 52-34 slate as 1st coach to last decade by walt briggs when bill leckonby walks off the field after the game tomorrow it will mark the completion of his tenth season at the helm of the packers the longest tenure of any football coach in the history of the university leek will be seeking his sord victory against 34 losses and two ties since he took over the helm in 1946 a packer victory would mark the second time in 72 years of intercollegiate football at le high that a team has ended the season with eight victories in nine games in 1914 the packers completed an 8-1 season those spending the weekend here who are unfamiliar with leckonby's habits during the game will find that with the kickoff it's all busi ness hundreds of hours of practice on the field additional hours spent in skull sessions and grueling hours of anticipation during the past eight games will come to a climax when the ball flies through the air on the kickoff from the start of the game leck onby will pace the sidelines impa tiently kicking ground or walking with mike cooley his assistant and line coach at times he will walk to the field phone to learn what the spotters have picked up watching the game from the press box with this additional informa tion or change of tactics leck onby will give general orders to the bench and then specific in structions to his substitutes there will be little change in ex bill leckonby sailed from brooklyn to lehigh packers slight favorite 17,000 to pack taylor by tom kelly ■if s going to be pretty tough we're meeting our strongest opponent of the year on any particular saturday coaches steve hokuf of lafayette college and bill leckonby of lehigh echoed identical sentiments on the eve of the 91st renewal of th nation's oldest consecutive football rivalry tomorrow at 1:30 in taylor stadium close to 17,000 fans are expected to jam into taylor to see whether the packers with a fine 7-1 record under their belts can break a string of two straight losses to the traditional leopard rivals once again as in 1953 and 1954 the packers are rated six-point favorites on past record completely upsetting the smart money the underdog maroon turned both games into routs 33-13 and 46-0 this year however lehigh will be striving to cap off its best season since all-winning 1950 an added incentive is that brown teams have won only 30 of the 90 games played in the series lafayette holds 57 wins and three games were tied leckonby plans to go saturday with the same lineup that started against albright last week austin short sound again and dick carney will open at ends with pass-snaring tom faillace waiting in the wings big tackles pete williams and bill doremus will team with guards pete johnson and captain bruno pagnani in the center of the line steady alex maslwosky is at center dangerous dan nolan sec ond highest scorer in the state with 61 points will practice his football fakery against the rug ged leopard line from the quar terback slot swivel-hipped bob naylor hero of spectacular kick-off and punt re turns is fully rested from his bang ed-up shoulder and will be in the left-halfback post keith rust dick pennell or jim strain will be the right-halfback and walt pijawka pep rally kicking-off the weekend the class of 59 will crowd into grace hall for the traditional pre-game pep rally at 7:30 fol lowing the cheering and presen tation of skits the rally will ad journ to prior field for the ig nition of the woodpile the cus tomary march on fern sem will
