lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 15 tuesday november 15 1955 telephone university 6-0331 cases of infection drop on weekend the intestinal infection or gastro enteritis as it is known technically which has plagued students for the past few days apparently died quiet ly over the weekend only a half-dozen cases re ported to the health center monday in contrast to the flood of patients treated last week according to dr ray andrews there were approximately 60 cases wednesday 100 cases thursday 140 cases friday and 60 cases saturday morning however these were not all new cases every day indications of a decrease in the attack of intestinal and stomach in flammation was evident saturday when only a dozen new cases were reported the attacks of sickness last for a period of approximately 36 hours in individuals gastroenteritis seems to be caus ed in this instance by a toxin rather than by a definite bacteria although a bacteria may produce the toxin said andrews we have sent cul tures to the hospital laboratory but we haven't got the results back yet even with the results we'll prob ably never be able to pin down the source of infection he added it was also announced that the university is seeking to hire the services of a nurse for duty at the center from 4 p.m to mid night five days a week at pres ent the center is open only un til 5 p.m since the nurse who was on duty from 5 to 8:30 quit nov 1 for those who are still in the last stages of the illness dr andrews recommends avoidance of greasy foods and an increase in the intake of sugar to build up strength science section in life carries fritz lab story lehigh's recently dedicated five million pound capacity tension compression machine in fritz lab has received coverage in this week's issue of a national magazine life magazine carries a full pa pc photograph contrasting the size of the gigantic machine and the dwarfed figures of two technicians a compact descrip tion of the machine and its abili ties run as the feature story in its science category the picture taken from near the top of the six-story building pro vides an excellent view of the 60 foot tall machine and also shows the surrounding test bay and location of the student labs heavy hand with light touch is a significant heading for the arti cle which features the vast power as well as the delicate mechanisms a series of pictures in sequence shows the tension cross-head deli cately extinguishing a flame of a candle without buckling the candle itself the results of tension and compression tests arc pictured in two additional photographs which also compare the size of the specimens with lab techni cians for the particular tests shown a combined weight of over 8.500.000 lbs was applied by the machine hiese tests were similar to those performed at the dedication cere monies last month samuel j errcra engineer of tests stated that since the dedication ceremonies the new machine has been in constant use however no few couples attend rhcs informal dance amid sparse attendance rhc pre sented an informal dance saturday night on the upper floor of grace hall only 30 to 40 couples were on hand to celebrate the event with music being supplied by the collegians lehigh's popular orchestra the couples trod the floor from 9 to 12 refreshments consisting of coke were dispens ed residence halls director philip b woodroofe contacted by the b&w sunday afternoon advanced several explanations for the the poor at tendance at the dance woodroofe stated that possible reasons might be the nearness to | lafayette weekend the fact that saturday's game was away at al bright and deviation from last year's procedure of importing dates from surrounding women's colleges for the dance 3 injured in fall ifc game the campus injury list received three new additions last week as two students were hurt playing ifc football and another was involved 111 a tumble down a flight of stairs none of the injuries was listed as serious two delta tau delta fraterni ty brothers were involved in accidents last wednesday after noon and were both treated at st luke's hospital within a 10 minute period the accidents took place at different locations under different circumstances howard keim jr 56 received the first injury when he twisted his knee while playing in an ifc foot ball game at saucon park he was treated at the dispensary and re leased ten minutes later frederick g heath 57 was admitted to the dis pensary with a broken wrist suffer ed as a result of his falling down the fraternity house steps james f kelly jr 56 of sig ma phi fraternity was also the victim of an interfratcrnity foot ball injury as he was struck in the throat during a game at saucon on the night of nov 3 a lehigh student now on a leave of absence struck and killed a 57 year old wid ow on ocean aye near avenue u in new york city the student edwin lebow 21 was charged with vehicular homi cide according to the police the widow mrs philomena mcmi had just left a movie theater and was stepping off the curb at this inter section when the car hit her the accident happened so fast that mrs memi's companion was not even aware of it until it was all over both lebow and mrs mcmi were residents of the area frosh gather wood for lafayette bonfire climaxing the pre-lafayette foot ball game activities the boys of 59 will ignite their bonfire in upper taylor field and then march across town to serenade the mo mo girls friday evening timber is now being collected by the various groups of frosh according to schedule accumu lation of the firewood will con tinue until friday night the collection and integration of wood along the roads of sayre park will be supervised by a freshman cabinet committee excitement will combine with ef fort when the 59 ers defend their bonfire against any easton invaders to guarantee the admittance of no maroon and white emi grants only men with dinks and proof of their status in the form of id cards will be admitted to the bonfire area sirens horns cow bells and any other warning devices will add to the guarding festivities a volatile combination of skits lampooning lafayette will be pre sented on the upper floor of grace hall tomorrow night from 4 to 6 p.m the preliminary razing in which each frosh living group must participate will lead to the final show of love for competi tion at the pep rally friday night four semi-finalists will execute the best skits at this time from these performances the skit most representative of lehigh's attitude towards the emulator from easton will be selected also at this time the winner of the frosh song contest will be announced after airing their emotions at the rally the freshmen clad in dinks and pajamas will proceed to the woodpile where they will at last ig nite the collected stack the usual pajama parade is then scheduled to commence under careful supervision the frosh will march across the penny bridge and through town to fern sem where they will serenade the females band members will lead the 59ers both in their parade and in their serenade to prevent confu easton men administer tree shaves to victims by joel newman it seems that exciting events in anticipation of the lehigh-lafayette game have been transpiring for quite some time an example of this furms the following narrative by two participating freshmen we were walking down the street after the freshman game when all of a sudden there ap peared hundreds of lafayette men running after us stated jack eckstein 59 and frank mccarthy 59 as they explained the reason for their shiny pates after disabling several lafayette men the two freshmen were cap tured and given lafayette crew-cuts the bloodthirsty desires of the enemy satisfied the men were then wined and dined also a victim of lafayette men was john shanebrook 59 who was dragged into a green ford converti ble by four men at 1 a.m nov 12 he was taken to d.u fraternity house at easton where a free hair cut was administered by eager pledges bob christie 58 was taken after a brief fight in front of taylor house last friday at 2 a.m by men in a 1953 ford con vertible five fraternity pledges took him to a dormitory where he was shaved bob was return ed to lehigh at 4 a.m it seems probable that these raids were a retaliatory measure for the raid staged on lafayette last mon | day night by a number of lehigh upperclassmen these men captured jim watson 58 who starred on la fayette's freshman track team last spring he had a 1 shaved on his head and some dye was added for good measure strain in valn—the 70 or 80 frosh above failed to ouptull 175 leop ards in the traditional renewal of the pull scalped—frank mccarthy 59 and jack eckstein 59 sport the new lock after leopards made like indians on their heads 6 tickets cost student 30 bethlehem police arrested a le high student last week for failing to pay parking tickets dating back to february the student ralph t heller 56 paid two dollars each for the six tickets plus 18 in costs the normal assessment is five dollars on each charge but the police eased upon on heller in stead of paying 42 he was charged 30 four of the delinquent tickets were for overstaying time at park ing meters and the other two were for parking in prohibited zones see additional page 4 see leonard page 4
