lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 14 friday november 11 1955 telephone university 6-0331 arcadia polls open for filing i strongly urge eligible students to take out petitions and run for arcadia said gilbert e moskowitz 56 chairman of the elections com mittee in announcing arcadia elec tions dec 14 15 and 16 last year we had only 26 can didates this year we would like to see close to 50.1 believe there are at least this many students who could do a capable job on arcadia stated moskowitz petitions for candidates may be obtained begining nov 14 from mrs moravec in drown hall petitions must be returned to the same office by 4 p.m nov 30 campaigning will officially begin dec 5 and end dec 13 any student who has not at tained senior standing is not on scholastic probation and has completed at least one semester at lehigh is eligible for candi dacy this eliminates first se mester freshmen and sept 55 transfer students each petition er must secure 30 names to make his petition valid the election dates have been changed from the spring to conduct the election in an atmosphere free from fraternity rushing problems to spread out election dates over a wider period and to create a lame duck session which will give the new arcadians a chance to organize before they actually assume their newly elected positions elections of officers will take place at the first meeting following the date of the new arcadia's instal lation rh men to hop tomorrow nite grace hall's upper floor current ly serving as the campus ballroom will again be the site of a dance to morrow evening from 9 to 12 mid night when rhc fetes its residence hall men open to the entire university the dance has been given wide publicity through the efforts of the rhc social committee and it is hoped that a large turnout will be realized ticket sales have been under way during the week in the various resi dence halls under the direction of the dorm social chairmen the price of the tickets is 1.50 per couple once again lehigh's own orches tra the collegians will be on hand to supply the tempo for the dancers refreshments consisting of coke and more coke will be avail able and coat-checking facilities will be supplied john antrim 56 is general chair man of the dance while george gra ham 57 has charge of decorations 59 frosh participating in rope tug tomorrow the class of 59 will send 59 repre sentatives to lafayette tomorrow to support the lehigh end of the rope at the annual tug-of-war as pre lafayette activities get under way notice was given to each frosh group by the freshman cabinet to choose two of the heaviest wen from its section to repre sent lehigh in tomorrow's test of strength each of the 59ers will wear a browri cardboard l around his neck while he defends the pride of lehigh which has lost only one con test since the tradition was estab lished many years ago the customary lafayette skits will be presented by each freshman group on the upper floor of grace hall from 4 to 6 p.m on thursday each frosh living group will be required by cyanide to give a skit razing the rival and from these contestants the judges will select four winners who will compete in the finals to be held dec 4 snowball dance to feature matt gillespie matt gillespie and his orchestra veterans of fall houseparty 55 in grace hall will again be featured at this year's snowball dance in grace hall dec 4 it was announced mon day at the sophomore cabinet meet ing the 14-piece aggregation which has played for the snow ball for the past six years will entertain an audience expected to reach 350 couples straight dance music a jazz con cert and a mambo band comprised of m embers of the gillespie organi zatlon will complete the evening's pr gram gihespie's group has recently j-'o^pleted engagements at many col ges throughout the east including enn state moravian and lafayette dance tickets which may be pur chased in a package deal with mus ard and cheese's king henry iv r singly will soon be available health service needed an editorial there is no 24-liour medical service at lehigh the administration has said that it will not provide such service until it can be proved the need exists the need existed wednesday night an outbreak of intestinal infection brought over 60 men to the health center with many others infected who did not bother to go for treatment five men were bedded down in the center others just as ill were treated and sent back to their residences because of lack of space it should be said here that the infection while de cidedly incapacitating is not of such a nature as to re quire immediate hospitalization night came the five men were still in the health center at 9 p.m with members of the staff voluntarily putting in extra hours a decision had to be made to send them to their living groups or keep them in the center it is a policy of st luke's hospital to accept only emergency cases after 5 p.m various possibilities were suggested—having the campus police check every half hour sedation—which were rejected as not in the best interests of the men the solution would have been to have some one on duty through the night not to give treatment—the downed—robert sawyer 58 is shown bedded in the health center early wednesday evening with a case intestinal infection the infec tious bacteria sent 60 men to the center for treatment wednesday alone arcadia signs peace pact peace has been declared for the forthcoming match between lehigh and its archrival lafayette arcadia stated last wednesday hoping to develop a spirit of cooperation and a sense of fair play between the two schools representatives of each student government have signed the annual peace pact the pact appeals to the better ' —— judgment of those individuals who think they must attack lafoyette students or damage campus prop erty and is designed to restrict the traditional rivalry to the gridiron bonfire raids and campus destruc tion will not be tolerated violators will be severely dealt with affirm ed the arcadians there seems to be a real evi dence of cooperative spirit in this undertaking on the part of lafayette f bruce waechter president of arcadia comment ed it should be emphasized that in all cases students responsible for vandalism and rowdyism must pay for any damages incurred and in many cases the penalty is far more severe than usual waechter con tinued those signing were president waechter robert haltenhoff and william b zeiter members of ar cadia also john salvador president of the lafayette student coun cil jack bocher bruce tem pest michael mccooey and kurt klunder members of the lafayette student government to discourage the vandalism the brown and white and the lafayette have agreed to exchange 200 statement that men re porting sick at the center had eaten at a variety of places four of the men bedded in the center were sent back to their living groups for the night a fifth man having a temperature of 103 degrees was sent to st luke's hospital the tempera tures of the four ranged from 100 to 102 degrees the possibility of leaving the men at the center was considered since rest and not direct treatment was required dr andrews considered the use of sedation or having the campus police make half-hour checks but rejected these possibili ties because of their inadequacy sending all of the men to st luke's was deemed infeasible be cause their cases were not except one severe enough to warrant tak ing up valuable hospital space extra tickets for lafayette available tues all students who wish to obtain more than one ticket to which they are entitled for the lehigh-lafa yette football game will be required to pay 3.50 for each extra ticket these extra tickets may be purchased by the living groups tuesday according to the posi tion on the new priority list town council should make ar rangements as a group to purchaee extra tickets at their alloted time the same as a living group one member should have all the id cards plus all the cash for the extra tick ets desired by members of the town council members of the town group who wish additional tickets will have to request them through town council or obtain them at taylor gym wed esday at the regular public sale h the first 12 living groups on the list will report to taylor gym at 9:10 a.m tuesday morn ing
