lehigh university brown and white volume 67—number 11 friday october 28 1955 university 6-0331 a night in hades hp goers will whirl in hellish atmosphere by mark evans and john mimnaugh although cerberus the three-headed watchdog of the underworld will not stand at the doors of grace hall tonight as he did at the gates of hades in the days of zeus and poseidon the same hellish atmosphere will prevail when over 1,000 couples kick their hooves to the red-hot horns of the sauter-finegan orchestra amid scores of devils and other grotesque figures the revelers will cavort warming themselves with the intense heat generated by the s-f musicmakers the first floor furnace doors will rem*»nop*n rom a 10 p.m until 2 a.m j^m«&fo>k ffl with total attendance during the weekend expected to hit a new high the outlook points toward a capacity adms possibly large enouphh surpass last year's record turnout j«pn tripped to the music of thl dorsey brothers jbsr matt gilles#ie known to lejj|fn dancers for his fine instrumentation at recent snowball dances wjmmng his brassy orchestra to the confines of the upper floor scene oi^bx year's fine performance by the rhythm aires fgj a large devil's skulgslhind the s-f bandstand and exfcemely gro tesque figures in keejhng with the hades theme placed|£round the sides of the dance floor at regular intervals will glow beneath dim , halloween wiljfiet the mood on the upper floor with a tanta spooks and goblinjflcncircling the dancing area the ceiling will be cov ered by royal ahe and yellow fabric drapes completely topping the dance area blujrobric will cover the side and end walls a large punmfin mounted on dark blue cloth will enliven the band stand under sfißuued lighting created by means of floodlights and spot lights focused on the stand and the various figures chaperones for the dance will include chaplain and mrs raymond e fuessle and mrs john m haight prof and mrs george p conrad 11 nd mr and mrs herbert w fraser jm as a majßjffeature of tonights dance program the houseparty queen will reigniafandidates as was the procedure last year will come from the separate living groups «^ one girl lay be entered by each fraternity one from the town group and price 111 and two from each of the residence halls tempos with taylor m candidates must report to room 167 in grace hall accompa final eg||ice of the queen from among the six semi-finalists will be made at midnight by sauter finegan and their vivacious vocalist m additiol||p the grace hall festivities numerous residence hall and fraternity paftgas will blossom with activity before and after the formal affair fratensß^unctions will conclude at 3 a.m the big even^h|morrow of course will be the lehigh-temple grid tussle at taylor iraßiim nearly all the seats in the neygwlnds on the south side of the fies^jsteve been sold out dm temple university's marching band will present an impromptu dixie concert on the lawn of the delta chi house after the game the concert will probably last for an hour and will be followed by cocktail parties at many houses and a tea-dance at leonard hall evening carousing will begin sqmsi&p e after 8 p.m saturday when fra ernity houses will open their door to freshmen for the first time frater nity parties will last until 2 p.m at which hour daylight saving time again returns for its winter jjjspr wak town students as the debussy of jazz garner's latest album titled solo flight displays his great rhythm poetry and color with such favor " ' ~ ~ ites as dancing in the dark cocktails for two and it don't wfflh a thing garner has often been called a bop pianist because he has been lined with bop musicians in most of his recording and public perform ances garner is an unlettered pian ist who grew up in pittsburgh where he was born in 1921 and settled in new york in 1944 errol has an intuitive gift for music that charms whether it's ragtime waller or debussy or bop in origin adored by bop musicians garn er's music represents the taste of men who played bop and the music they would have had if they played slower and paid more attention to the sound than the idea undergraduates will be admitted to news writing contest sponsored by pi delta epsilon the national honorary journalistic fra this years winner was robert e balestier arts 56 who placed second in the editorial division of the contest his editorial ap peared in the march 4th edition of the b&w and was entitled to pick representatives balestier's comments in the article were directed to the whole student body and concerned the apparent lack of interest by the student body in arcadia elections he cited the fact that over the past five years only 61 per cent of lehigh's eligible voters have gone to the polls irf the student government elections ' judges in the contest were torai crt e g harris editorial consultant of frontier magazine john b jack son publications editor of walt dis ney productions joseph osherenli publisher and editor of fashion publications and leonard riblett assistant city editor of the los an geles examiner in the 1954 contest the b&w entry entitled 4 lams gambol written by frederick j war necke 55 was the first place winner in the news division warnecke's story described the hazing in reverse prank which the pi lambda phi pledges pulled when they removed the license plates from cars parked along e market and high sts early one morning luckily no real damage was done and the culprits were left off with a reprimand and 9 court costs balestier's article called particular attention to the fact that many stu dents gripe about the poor record of arcadia accomplishments yet these same men never take the trouble to go and vote and elect i somebody who will work to accom iplish what i^^tudent body wants he concluded his remarks with the following three para graphs more probably it the cause is a general lack of in terest by students at a basically engineering university many just
