lehigh university brown and white vol 87—no 2 tuesday sept 7 1955 un 6-0331 glick announces dorm fund hits 1,535,580 mark latest figures available from el mer w glick university treasurer i place the current pledges received for the packer hall-dormitory fund at the 1,525,580 mark the planned goal for the fund is 2,200,000 according to the latest infor mation available new plans are being made for the collection of the remaining sum and renewed area drives will get under way in october so far 3256 contri butors have pledged funds in the campaign alumni and friends of the uni versity in the bethlehem area have subscribed the largest amount with a total of 575,092 being reported by john k conneen chairman of the local area other areas and amounts reported to date are metropolitan new york city 302,100 metropolitan philadel phia 122,000 northern new jersey 72,800 massachusetts 43,794 con necticut 31,723 bergen and passaic counties in new jersey 11,820 and montgomery county pennsylvania 11,520 alumni gifts in other parts of the nation total 352,931 the brown and white fund organized by mahlon b simon jr managing editor of the news paper amassed a total sum of 10,180 the fund was organized so that students would have the opportunity to participate in the drive to raise funds for the sore ly needed center renovation of packer hall contin ues with most of the inside walls and floors having been removed in preparation for the new inside con struction landscaping is in process in back of the building and a road is being created out of the terrace by a steamshovel when renovated packer will be the new student center included within will be meeting rooms for the various campus organizations a dining hall and a snack bar the structure will also house the cam pus b^en struck by a bomb when re built as the new university center however it will be the fecal point of student life and services chico carrasquillo returns cornell punt for 12 valuable yards in the second quarter of the opening game in ithaca lehigh went to the big red 10 yard line on the drive initiated by this run in the following ser ies the engineers scored their only touchdown cornell came back in the final stanza to score the win ning counters 64 disciplined in 54-'55 actions in disciplinary action during the school year 1954-1955 64 students were punished by the committee on discipline for infractions of univer sity regulations ranging from poor citizenship to the wanton destruc tion of property the committee consisting of dean wray h congdon as chairman two members of the faculty and two members elect ed by arcadia prescribed pun ishments of disciplinary demer its and in many cases expulsion from residence halls or suspen sion from the university for the wanton destruction of public property three students were reprimanded and assessed two dis ciplinary demerits each in addition to civil police action and the pay ment of all costs ten freshmen and one junior were dropped from courses and denied course credit for dishonesty in ex aminations one student was sus pended for one semester and one student for one year disciplinary demerits were assessed in varying amounts from one to five disorderly conduct unbecom ing a gentleman brought one freshman and one senior repri mands and strict warnings one sophomore was warned and assessed two disciplinary demerits for falsification of signature on a li brary card for falsification of a laboratory report and assignments one fresh man and two juniors were repri manded one was dropped from a course without credit and two were assessed disciplinary demerits firearms were confiscated and up to three disciplinary demer its were assessed to two fresh men and one sophomore for dis obeying firearms regulations the sophomore was expelled from the residence halls gambling in the residence halls brought one senior eight disciplin ary demerits and suspension from the university for one year for the same offense one freshman was placed on dormitory probation and assessed four disciplinary demerits and three sophomores and two seniors were expelled from the resi dence halls insubordination brought one freshman a reprimand and two dis ciplinary demerits 311,155 to aid needy intellects scholarships valued at 311,155 have been awarded students for 55 56 three hundred eighty-four un dergraduates will get awards total ling 259,555 and 33 advanced stu dents will receive financial aid of 51,600 included in the total of un dergraduate grants is 47,500 to 73 freshmen among the gradu ate students receiving fellow ships and scholarships are ad vanced students from england france formosa india jordan and the philippines surprised red triumphs 14-6 by ray farkas 10,000 watch season opener for the better part of 45 rain soaked minutes the big red of cor nell tried without success to shove their vaunted backfield through the lehigh line on schoellkopf field ithaca n.y saturday with the hopelessness of this strategy staring them in the face the men of lefty james shifted their running game out side the ends counted twice in the final period and turned an opening-game 6-0 deficit into a 14-6 victory a crowd of approximately 10,000 saw lehigh tackles bill doremus and pete williams guards pete johnson and bruno pagnani and center alex maslowsky keep cor nel's supposedly lightning-fast back field from crossing the mid-field stripe during the entire first half while the cornellians were tear ing up their own turf lehigh show ed no such partiality not that they ran around at will but a recovered cornell fumble and an intercepted pass put lehigh in big red property midway through the first period the lone score for the losers came at 12:47 of the second quarter when halfback chico carrasquilo scored from three yards out on an option play carrasquillo's extra-point at tempt fell short and lehigh had a 6-0 lead three plays picked up nothing for lehigh after bill degraffs opening kick off and sophomore fullback walt pijawka punted to the cornell 36 the two teams exchanged punts degraff seemingly had the cor nell attack rolling midway through the second period moving the pig skin almost to the midfield stripe on seven plays a beautiful diving catch by right end gerry knapp of a degraff pass accounted for 13 of the 30 yards picked up just as the cornell fans decid dean hayes issues foil regulations fraternity presidents were advis ed of governing rules for the fall se mester in a memo issued by dean byron c hayes presidents were reminded that a list of all members and pledges currently registered at the university must be submit ted immediately to the dean's office no person not a member or pledge may live in the fraternity house without special permission of the dean's office in advance any changes in the status of members or pledges must be reported immedi ately any firearms not registered with the office should be returned to the student's home or placed in the cus tody of capt richard c gottschall department of military science other weapons and explosives should be disposed of concerning social events dink hop will feature collegians blind dates dates from area girls colleges and nursing schools will be provided for freshmen attending the annual dink hop saturday night in grace hall before dancing to the notes of the collegians a 14-piece dance band composed entirely of le high students who devote con siderable time to music of the popular and dance variety on and off campus 59'ers and their dates will dine at lamberton hall from 6 to 7 p.m as in past years freshmen and their blind dates will be paired ac cording to height this will be done on the lower floor of grace hall when the girls arrive by bus from their respective schools the sophomore class cabinet presently completing plans for the dance is anticipating a large turnout for the affair which was attended by approximately 200 couples last year beaver college centenary junior college and cedar crest college will be among the schools from which dates will be invited freshmen who wish to bring their own dates are wel come to do so tickets for the affair are being sold by members of the sophomore class cabinet and are priced at 4.50 per couple each freshman will be contacted individually sometime to night or tomorrow tickets may also be purchased in front of lamberton hall during the week upperclassmen with their own dates will be admitted to the dinner and dance or to the dance itself no upperclassmen will be admitted without their
