bethlehem pa friday april 9 1976 vol 87 — no 42 215-866-0331 lehigh university brown and scweiker atttacks cia at forum vi convocation by sally velthaus we need a cia we need a good one senator richard schweiker r-pa told his audience tuesday night schweiker chairman of the senate select committee on intelligence spoke on perspectives from washington at the forum vi convocation u s intelligence agencies have been involved m assassinations extortions and mail openings and have infiltrated scores of political groups to create dissension he said schweiker said his committee is investigating these abuses past presidents have used the fbi for purely political purposes schweiker said a law is needed schweiker said to force the president to approve all covert activities of the cia currently top person can always claim he did not know what was going on he said the fbi has committed hundreds of break-ins without search warrants sch weiker said the agency is successful m doing that because of its perfect cover up system he said a lot of things never got into the files because of the do not file system where memos are con veniently left unfiled the senator ex plained the cia has been involved m abuses of power schweiker said he said the code word for its illegal domestic program is appropriately operation chaos other abuses of power included mail opening offenses and the monitoring of college groups at boston university brown and utah state by the cia sch weiker said examples of questionable activity by the agency included involvement m angola and the payment of contradicts university policy by andrea kaplan disciplinary action resulting from the recent search of a student's room and the subsequent seizure of marijuana con tradicts a statement made by william quay dean of students last november the student's room was investigated during spring recess after a maintenance man working m the room saw a light m the student's closet and discovered 105 marijuana plants quay said m an in terview last november that students rooms are entered at times by main tenance people but what they see may not be used against the students quay directed that the plants be confiscated according to sharon drager assistant dean of students in a recent interview with the brown and white quay said according to official university policy just cause is enough to obtain a university search warrant for example a student reporting another student is just cause he explained quay said the criteria for rooms sear ched when the student is absent depends on the matter of degree of the case this was a major thing he said at a discipline committee hearing tuesday the student pleaded guilty to having the plants which were confiscated at the time of the search drager con fiscated the plants the student said other students owned the plants the student was placed on disciplinary probation until the end of fall 1976 semester and assigned to 56 hours work detail searches of four students rooms have been conducted by university officials this semester two for marijuana and two for knives and firearms according to quay drager said she has had more suspicions m the last few weeks that there is an increase of drugs on campus it's not a provable one or one i can confirm she said drager said her suspicions have been somewhat corroborated by reports from students not administration or faculty students are concerned about drugs on campus drager said she said they are afraid the drugs that are coming m are impure drager believes the drugs are not concentrated m one place but are m both the dormitories and the fraternities the problem we have is getting proof she said quay and drager both said they wouldn't be surprised if there were undercover narcotics agents on campus however the university has no knowledge of it drager views the presence of drugs at the university as fluctuating but not grandiose i don't know whether it's that kids went to strange places tomorrow and the new body will be a unique forum right from the first order of business for the first time since curtis clump defeated george dinsmore m a run-off election for chairman of forum 11 the race for forum chairman is being tightly contested in a way the david amidon-lawrence leder contest is like round two of fight between two lehigh political heavyweights round one was fought back m 1970 when leder chairman of the history department fired then assistant professor of history amidon the official reason given for amidon being denied tenure was that he had not completed his doctoral dissertation in a year when student activism swept the country s college campuses lehigh students joined with many faculty members m a fight to keep amidon at the university during the same period the lehigh student government arcadia voted to disband a student strike took place on the campus later to be known as spring 70 university president w deming lewis decided not to give amidon tenure but made a committment to keep him on the faculty amidon is presently working under the unique title of lecturer m the division of urban studies so round one can be considered a draw leder got amidon out of his department but amidon managed to keep his job at lehigh round two will not end m a draw it seems almost certain that one of the two will be elected forum vii chairman tomorrow supporters of both men have been working hard all week drumming-up support for their candidate unlike recent forum chair elections pdlitiking and interest is high this year amidon's strongest support is coming from the student membership most of forum vi student members who were re elected to forum vii are supporting amidon among them are mike exstein bruce rosenthal dave van doren and cathy charwat at a forum vii student caucus meeting held yesterday no strong support for the leder candidacy was visible however on the faculty side forum vi chairman raymond bell is supporting leder because he feels leder
