followed by a series of meetings at which the merits of world fed eralism will be discussed finished polls which are to be torn out of the paper will be col lected by the presidents of . the dorm sections and those of the fra ternities they may also be de posited in any one of the arcadia baltot boxes which will be placed in packard lab chirstmas-saucon hall the library and drown hall 11 lehigh business students in duval investment contest awards of 200 300 and 500 have been announced by the pierre a duval foundation of new york city to encourage investment studies students entering the duval contest invest a theoretical 25,000 in stocks listed on the new york stock and curb exchanges for the year beginning march 15 1950 prof h d hotchkiss of the economics department has pointed out that for the past four years students of fin 123 and 124 have maintained such hypothetical port folios in which they keep theoreti cal records of stocks and bonds bought and sold for the duval awards a pan el of experts will study all sub mitted records and bestow the yearly prizes on the basis of max imum dividends and appreciation with consistent safety this contest is partly the result of a poll conducted by the duval foundation among leading educa tors of the country concerning a suitable method of encouraging investment studies among stu dents many educators expressed interest in the plan that has since been adopted by the foundation and offered suggestions about the awards few vets among entering students accenting the decline of vet erans attending college less than one-third of the new students ar riving at lehigh at the start of the second semester were former ser vice men of the 26 newly arrived stu dents on^ly ei£|ht are veterans none of the new men are rookies as far as college life goes 1 , for all are transfer students only one of the newcomers hails from outside pennsylvania this one exception is a native of a territory outside the united states shigeyuki otoshi whose home is in honolulu most of the incoming group list business as their curriculum with eight students designating this as their major three of them are classified in the general hold the f ourtth annual intercollegiate band con cert on the lehigh campus in april 1951 the occasion in pittsburgh was the third annual intercollegiate band concert held in carnegie music hall under the direction of william a schaeffer director of the carnegie tech kiltie band mark h rindsley director of the university of lillinois band was guest conductor for three days 1 140 musicians from 32 colleges and universities in pennsylvania rehearsed in the music hall for the concert given feb 25 included among these were e ward cheney 51 play ing first clarinet lewis hosfeld 50 firstt flute james delancey 53 second bassoon and j rob ert cairns 50 first cornet program included finale from symphony no 5 shostakovich lady of spain evans slavonic rhapsody no 11 friedman fi nale from death and transfigu ration r strauss scherzo from symphony in b flat fau has explained this composition as one to evoke the atmosphere of a beautiful summer's night solo parts have been written for flute english horn and strings following the rendition of this new work the original score will be presented to the student concerts-lectures series commit tee sponsors of the orchestra's visit to bethlehem for a school children's matinee and lehigh evening concert on march 10 barraud is one of the leading composers in europe today to gain a livelihood while a student at the paris conservatory where he studied with paul dukas louis aubert and florent schmitt he worked for the society of authors after a brief career as a wine salesman in 1932 he began to gain recognition with his finale dune fall of 1939 he was inducted into the french army as a lieutenant in the 117 th infantry regiment he took part in the campaigns of the ardennes and the sarre during periods of inaction at the outposts escaped from his guards into unoccupied france and lived in seclusion until 1943 during his period of hiding he completed three compositions which remain as testimony of this tragic period concert for written especially for lehigh a new composition for symphony orchestra will be the second-half feature of the st louis symphony concert under the direction of vladimir golschmann at 8 p.m friday in grace hall called nocturne the new piece was composed by henry barraud makeups start list late tests in 60 courses make-up and special examina tions for the fall semester got under way saturday afternoon feb 25 with the mil 1 exam in packard lab between 60 and 65 courses will be extended to students in the be lated exams james h wagner as sistant registrar pointed out fol lowing the release of the exam schedule the three-hour quizzes will be held each saturday during march and on april 15 university regulations concern ing examinations in cases of aca demic deficiences state that if a students is absent from a final examination for reasons that seem good and sufficient to the com mittee invoved he may upon peti tion be granted a makeup exam all petitions must be ac companied by adequate evidence of the cause of absence such as a medical certificate in the case of illness wagner in the release said that students must have received per mission prior to taking make-up or special examinations students who have petitioned and have not re ceived a written notice of action taken by the committee were ad vised to investigate immediately permits for those taking make up exams will be delivered to the proctor by the registrar's office all students taking the exams should take along notices approv ing their petitions students taking special re examinations those involving fees must pay the fee in advance have their permits receipted by the bursar and present the receipted permits to the proctor at the time of examination director of the french broadcast ing louis neuweiler business direc tor herbert hoover student di rector of music and frank larkin director of public relations participating this year with the lehigh glee club will be the famed lehigh valley symphony orchestra and the 80 voice glee club of beaver colloge for women at jenkintown pa whereas the staging effects before were emphasized by motion lighting will play the important role this year it will be used to create the proper staging moods and set diversifications necessary in so varied a program among the many new features year's festival will be the use of years festival will be the use of a scrim a scrim is a huge transparent screen which will permit the projection of slides and at the same time enable the audi ence to see the massed musical organizations behind it this year the program will be divided into two parts the first section of the festival will be a recital of the testament of freedom a documentary choral work written by randall thomp son in honor of
