review the number of university policemen ac cording to eric ottervik vice president for planning last february ottervik said the campus police department was doing an adequate job and that there was no compelling need to hire additional officers we have had a minimum yet adequate number of university policemen ot tervik said last week however with the sudden 37 per cent increase m local crime the number of policemen on duty should be reviewed and may m fact be inadequate he said the administration is also reviewing the campus police communications system and the possible allocation of a 24-hour police headquarters m the university center installation of additional alarm systems is also being considered increased violence on campus is due to a serious shortage of police personnel said owen mcfadden bethlehem police detective mcfadden is currently heading the investigation into campus vandalism over the winter recess the campus police are doing a fantastic job but they are understaffed he said presently the university employes 11 police officers two officers are on active duty m the evenings if a serious situation develops two officers cannot insure the safety to 3,000-5,000 people mcfadden said eugene dax captain of university police is working on a proposal to the administration for more police personnel and a new communications system dax said last february because of increasing enrollment and the expansion of the main campus area the campus police would require additional men and vehicles m order to maintain an effective security system at that time ottervik said there was no compelling need for more officers we need a faster and more effective communications system according to robert reeves assistant dean of students to contact the university police reeves explained that m tests there was a 3-5 minute time lag between the time a fraternity alarm goes off and the time the university police are radioed the in formation in these tests it took an ad ditional four minutes for the police to arrive at the fraternity ottervik pointed plant chief given leave by cathy charwat the university administration has given robert numbers director of physical plant a leave of absence with full salary until june 30 1976 eric ottervik vice president for planning said the university asked numbers to take a leave of absence while we study the organization of the department of buildings and grounds b&g paul miller superintendent of buildings and grounds b&g will serve as acting head allied maintenance corp has been hired to provide many of the services formerly handled by the department of buildings and grounds said ottervik organizational changes have also resulted m the transfer of campus police and telephone operators from b&g to other jurisdictions ottervik said the removal of these services from b&g's jurisdiction does not make the department underworked the b&g office is still responsible for all construction and repairs ottervik said there is plenty to do before we had to hire outside people to do contracting now we don't he added , before we were not able to use the b&g people m the way we can now m more productive and economical ways for example miller acted as the general contractor for the renovation of chandler lab ottervik said numbers is not a non-employe on july 1 presumably he will come back his job is still here ottervik said by the end of june we should know what will happen with b&g's organization m the future he added ottervik said the purpose of the study of b&g is not to lop people off but to study its organization we are not considering dismissal of anyone due to lack of available work he said numbers was unavailable for comment he went into the hospital this week because of a stomach disorder eric ottervik 170 employes will decide on unionizing approximately 170 university employes will vote thursday on whether or not to join teamsters local 773 workers to be represented by the union include custodial personnel ground skeepers and tradesmen all previously employed by the university and now under the management of allied maintenance corporation if the union receives the majority of votes m the election it willliave the right to represent the workers m negotiations with allied the national labor relations board will supervise the election a teamsters worker responsible for organizing the university workers was asked if he felt the employes would vote for unionization naturally we feel pretty confident that these people are very en thusiastic about us he said we feel we can help them out he added he asked not to be identified the teamsters worker said some university employes asked the teamsters to represent them local 773 attempted to organize the
