brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday february 10 1976 215-866-0331 vol 87 — no 31 cheech & chong fail to perform at university by debbie kelley i cheech and chong failed to give their erformance scheduled for friday night at irace hall they appeared approximately 0 minutes after the hall had been cleared the first priority of the student ac ivities council sac now is to give all students a fair and equitable settlement on ticket refunds and to disperse in formation on the refunding system said sac president bill conrad 76 students will receive a 4 reimbursement per ticket although there has been no official explanation for the lateness the limousine service which was to transport cheech and chong from the philadelphia airport to the university got lost and received a cheech & chong deans investigating harassment of women students at fraternity the brown and white has learned that members of the dean of students office are investigating for possible referral to the university committee on discipline approximately nine lehigh male students m connection with two incidents allegedly involving the harassement and m one case possible sexual abuse of two lehigh women both incidents allegedly took place last fall at a lehigh fraternity on nov 1 a lehigh woman told sharon drager assistant dean of students that she had been sexually abused the previous evening by four members of the fraternity m question following a halloween party the incident allegedly occured at about 4 a.m the woman also informed drager that she had just gone to a doctor upon hearing of this incident another woman student who was a friend reported to drager that she too had been harassed at that same fraternity m early october this incident allegedly occurred on oct 4 also early m the morning and following a party the woman involved m the halloween-night incident has refused to bring charges against the fraternity or the individuals involved the woman involved m the oct 4 incident originally told drager she would testify before the discipline committee only if the other woman would also bring charges and testify but the woman involved m the oct 4 incident told the brown and white saturday that she has recently told drager she would not bring charges she added that drager warned her that the com mittee could subpoena her to testify the women also told the brown and white that her incident was really nothing and that the men involved were just having fun allegedly this is what took place on oct 4 three male friends two of who were members of the frater nity were m the house's upstairs hallway the one who's not a member of that frat grabbed the woman around the waist the woman was allegedly pulled into one of his friend's room but she was released im mediately without being sexually touched touched both the woman and reliable sources from the fratnerity agree on this story except that the woman alleges that the other fraternity member not the one whose room was entered was nude sources from the fraternity deny this concerning the halloween-night in cident fraternity sources claim that the alleged sexual abuse involving four men was a fabrication they claim that on the night m question three of the men got involved m a beer fight they then proceeded upstairs showered and left their beer-drenched clothes m the shower room nude they went to their rooms one of the three opened his door and turned on the light only to discover he had intruded upon his roommate and the woman m question she was fully dressed at the time he then began to laugh and was joined by the other two frat members fraternity sources claim that the woman left immediately . the lehigh woman involved m this in cident could not be reached for comment drager refused to comment on the matter since she is still investigating several of the individuals allegedly involved have been questioned during the past week by members of the dean's office pending developments the brown and white has decided to withhold the names of all individuals and fraternity allegedly involved tuition increase causes dispute by ron winters the standards of education at the university would drop considerably without the proposed tuition increase according to bruce rosenthal 78 chairperson of the forum budget sub committee i feel the current tuition licrease is justified he said budget subcommittee member mike ixstein,'77 disagrees exstein said the lcrease is unfounded and higher than ecessary i think a tuition increase may be necessary but not to the high-dollar value which has been the precedent he said rosenthal explained the university board of trustees pressured the ad ministration into highly conservative budgeting practices and blamed brown and white editorials for distorting the issue the revenue received through the tuition increase is almost identical to salary hikes and the l-million increase m faculty fringe benefits rosenthal said there is no question that m faculty compensation lehigh must keep pace with other schools if we are going to maintain an attractive quality faculty he added you cannot maintain a quality in stitution if you make substantial cuts rosenthal explained he cited the library as an example saying the rate of increase m the library budgeting is less than the rate of inflation since tuition is such a high proportion of income when costs rise tuition must also rise rosenthal said disregarding auxiliary enterprises about 70 to 80 per cent of the university's income comes from tuition rosenthal added auxiliary enterprises all of which are self supporting consist of such concerns as dining services athletic facilities and the bookstore exsteinsaid many persons believe ad ministrative departments use a disproportionate amount of funds there is fat everywhere but perhaps its more prevalent m the non-academic sections he said the subcommittee is currently engaged m a computer research program which will produce statistics on administration costs at comparable universities exstein said he has examples of high ranking officers and offices which he claims are unnecessary but declined to allow the brown and
