establshment of the william paul and gertrude c starkey foundation to promote christianity as a fundamental of lehigh uni versity's general education plan was announced saturday by president whitaker provided by william p starkey of buck hill falls retired president of the starkey farms morrisville pa and a graduate of the class of 1900 the foundation contains a provision that portions of the princi the purpose of bringing to the uni versity chapel oustanding minis ters preferably from the episco pal church support of a depart ment of religion and chaplain at the university support of chapel services at the university and the development and improvement of library holdings in the area of christian religion volume 59 — number 3 brown and white lehigh university tuesday february 21 1950 bethlehem pa grapplers trounce navy 24-7 smashing middle victory jinx joint chapel service features beardslee's talk on w s c f students of lehigh university moravian college for women and moravian college for men conducted services in packer memorial church sunday feb 19 at 11 a.m alvord beardslee feb 50 gave an address which stressed the im miss lily miki young american japanese pianist bows to a ap preciative crowd of 700 at the student concert lecture series chi psi ransacked at dawn burglars net 1200 in loot the nine men who robbed the brink's armored car company several weeks ago had nothing on the men who raided chi psi early saturday morning according to pomce the burglars made off with 1,200 in loot it was early saturday morning sometime between 4 and 5 a.m when by john crane taking revenge of five strainght navy wins over some of the enginers best teams the lehigh uni versity wrestling team combined two pins and four dcesions to soundly trounce navy 24-7 before a jam med house in grace hall saturday night navy no longer had a line-up filled with top-flight werstlers like teh ones who have not lost to le high since 1939 even defeating the championship lehigh team of 1947 wayne smith who won a e.i.w.a title in 1947 was the only man on the navy squad who could decisively win mike filipos started lehigh on it ways to vctory wth a 10-3 decision over a taller but less-experienced bob sutley in the 121-pound class after filipos made short work of taking sutley down in the first peri od he remained on tip during most of the rest of the match scoring two more take?downs a pair of es capes and two point on time continuing his mastery in the 128-lb class george feuer bach pinned richmond neff in 6:32 with a body press both grap plers cleverly kept from being tak en down in the first period but on the mat feuerbach had the advan tage feuerbach's strength won out m the third period after he scored a reverse with dick kelsey out with a side injury lehigh's fred clay wrest ling his first varsity meet put up a fine defensive match against smith who had four years of ex perience behind him smith finally pinned clay in 7:47 with a cradle after clay had done everything to prevent navy from getting five points undefeated john mahoney add ed another win to his victory skein in the 145-lb class this one a 4-1 decision over bill daniels a re verse and two points time advan tage were all mahoney needed to win in a very slow match eric erickson's diving take down with 30 seconds left in the match broke a 4-4 deadlock to de feat navy's frank scolpino erick son remained on top in the second period and escaped early in the final three minutes to get time ad vantage and needed the last-min ute takedown to give lehigh the important three points in the 165-lb class pete murphy tied a capable floyd holloway the navy wrestler lost his two point advantage when he used an illegal continued on page 8 col 1 portance of the work which has both adult education and under graduate courses ten education students and their professors decided to give one of their dingy classrooms a new look during exam week the students and professors worked together to repaint the room a light green and white thanks to the cooperative stu dent-faculty effort other students have a pheasant seminar and lounge uwf gather butterworth is chosen prexy charles m butterworth 111 arts 50 was elected chair man of lehigh chapter united world federalists at an organi zational meeting in lamberton hall friday feb 17 others named were david caulkins e.e 50 vice chairman william baley arts professor robert bream facutly adviser achievement of world federation is the most urgent and important problem of our time according to dr albert einstein lehigh chapter's program to aid solution of that problem include self-edu cation and political action chair man butterworth announced in addition he said we will strive to coordinate interested in dividuals with the national or ganzation and to help possible creation of a bethlehem chapter by speaking before local civic groups world government res olutions were adopted by 15 state legislatures last year voters in massachusetts and connecticut favored world governemnt by 9-1 and 11-1 respectively in ballot ing there student members of lehigh chapter include alvord beardslee grad 50 michael teitler arts 53 mario d'antonio arts 50 thornton price grad and ralph towne ch.e 53 associate mem bes include prof bream and prof raymond sawyer physics depart ment operating for the first time under attendance regulations which permit freshmen and sophomores as many unexcused absences as their total number of credit hours and allowing juniors and seniors an un limited number of cuts the average lehigh student cut 10 classes dur ing the recent fall semester under the previous regulations a student could make twice as many the burglars staged their raid ap parently they entered the house through one of the back doors ran sacked the house and fled out the fire escape among the loot were three over coats four suits four pairs of pants a sport jacket a portable remington typewriter a navy jacket a brown leather overnight bag two watches and 185 in cash the students lost their weekend before it even started and still have not estimated the financial loss in ransacking the house the burglars appeared to have been very neat a pair of pants with a wallet in the back pocket was draped over a chair in one of the rooms the thieves emptied the wallet put it back in the pocket and rebuttoned it the cook sleeping in the base ment apartment heard dining room chairs being moved around but she did not take an action think ing that the disturbance was a late arriving student detective r e fleming of the bethlehem police department has sent out a teletype giving com plete description of all stolen goods fingerprints were taken at different spots in the house and prints were also taken of all the members deduction is expected to produce prints of the thieves three years ago in the spring of 1947 burgulars broke into chi psi and stole money but did not touch jewelry or clothes chi psi offers 100 reward for information leading to the arrest of the burglars be made into the scholastic records of these students to see if their academic work has suffered out of the undergradaute student body 139 of cuts dean seidle admitted that it was difficult to imagine students missing so many classes he said that a check would juniors and seniors aver aged far more cuts than members of the lower clasess who were held to more stringent regula tions in fact three juniors and five seinors soared over the 100 mark in obtaining cuts and one mem ber of this group cut between 140 and 149 classes pal may be used for such religious purposes as are determined jointly by the university and the donor the remaining principal is to re main intact and be invested at the discretion of the unversity board of
