being at least the question of whether or not to remove the 20 per cent maximim quota for admitting women to the university is a moot one b&w photo by glickman samuel missimer news analysis according to admissions director samuel missimer the same standards currently apply for women as men yet according to dean of students william quay the university is 50 women below its 800-women maximum committee to present resolution on abolition of saturday quizzes by ken handler a resolution calling for the abolition of saturday quizzes and requesting that another means of scheduling be used will be presented to the forum at its meeting tomorrow afternoon the forum academic environment committee has stated m the resolution that the quizzes violate the ban on saturday quizzes the forum will also consider two resolutions from the residence sub committee of the student life committee concerning the university's residence system these resolutions conflict to some degree with the recently completed residence halls council rhc lottery committee's report on residence policy william leahy 76 student life com mittee chairman said the biggest conflict concerns smags rhc proposes the dropping of smags original description as graduate housing and offering it as an option to undergraduates m their preliminary room contracts the report adds that the university has an overriding commitment to undergraduate housing however the student life committee proposes that graduate students be given priority m smags leahy said the rhc proposal for the lottery contained only a minor modification of the present system t therefore the committee decided to retain the present lottery system he ad ded rhc's proposal would give lotterized students who move off campus a higher priority than rising sophomores the following year the present system places those students at the bottom of the lottery brian finn 77 rhc president charged last week that the student life committee had ignored the rhc report he said he would take the 16 page report to the floor of the forum at tomorrow's meeting leahy said the conflicts between the two reports could result m a constitutional debate to determine whether rhc or the forum has the authority on residence matters in other business the financial aid subcommittee of the student life com mittee will present its report on cancelable loans the forum will convene at 4:10 p.m m the osbourne room of the university center _ quay requires gryphons to meet class average by ellen feldman all new gryphons will be required to have an academic average equal to the average of their class m their college a memo recently released by william quay dean of students states that for a two year trial period a candidate with an average below this level but above a 2.3 may be admitted to the society only if he receives an extraordinary recom mendation from a review committee the memo adds that any gryphon en tering the society under the new academic standards who becomes academically deficient will be reviewed by a gryphon committee quay's memo states this committee will submit its recom mendations to sharon drager assistant dean of students the memo adds that the gryphons and drager will decide on the composition of both review committees as they are the best qualified to make this decision quay said that while the original academic proposal was a decision of the entire dean of students office this decision was his own the original proposal called for every gryphon to maintain an academic average equal to that of their class m their college quay said he reached his decision after discussing the issue with gryphons and other deans m his office quay said he made the decision because he believes that a gryphon provides a role model for his freshmen to provide a good model he said a gryphon should at least perform at the average level of his classmates melinda gellman 78 one of the gryphons instrumental m the creation of the gryphon proposal said i just hope that the new emphasis on grades will not interfer with the goals of the gryphon society quay said the concept of gryphon review committees was incorporated into his decision from the gryphon proposal the gryphon proposal which was sub mitted to quay as an alternative to his proposal called for a minimum academic range of 2.0 to 2.3 and the formation of two review committees gary liddick 76 gryphon society president said of quay's decision i expected it but i'm still not satisfied with it gryphon larry johnson 78 said he liked quay's decision better than the gryphon proposal city residents ask pollution cut byjohncopoulos more than 100 bethlehem residents have signed a petition calling on the university to alleviate the pollution coming from the university power house in a recent city council meeting councilman frank muhr complained he cannot understand how lehigh can justify the pollution although the department of buildings and grounds would not comment on the problem eric ottervik vice president for planning offered some explanations both natural gas and high grade oil have become unavailable to the university because of current shortages he said the university therefore had been forced to burn a heavy grade oil which created the pollution problem he said ottervik ex plained the university has now switched to a better grade oil installed spray nozzles and cleans the stacks more often to control the problem muhr claims these steps have done little to alleviate the pollution he said lehigh should be able to expend 150,000 to put filters on the power house stacks the filters had been recommended earlier by babcock and wilcox power house con sultants ottervik explained if all else fails we might consider filters but they may be less effective than other steps we are taking our point is if you have half a dozen things to try you do not try the most expensive one first ottervik pointed out the expertise of allied maintenance inc should help solve the problem allied is bringing m the makers of the control system and the boilers on a consultant basis to review again what can be done to calibrate them better allied has also hired a supervisor to watch over operations he said bethlehem residents have complained that the soot from the power house has caused many inconveniences two residents who live
