reducing the size of the univer sity's custodial and maintenance staffs as workers leave through attrition of retirement according to george mailloux a company account executive no employees will be fired mailloux said the work load will be distributed among the remaining workers he said frank cancilliere allied's project manager at the university said he is not yet familiar enough with the university to determine how much the work force will be allowed to diminish allied will be paid m the area of 1 million to supervise the university's custodial and maintenance operations according to mailloux he said the exact price of the service is still being negotiated lith the university officials 8 according to a report to the forum by cc president for administration richard riggs the current budget for custodial and maintenance services is slightly less than 1.3 million mailloux said any changes m terms of the contract must be supported by mutual consent of the company and the univer allied should be able to provide cleaning and maintenance service for the university at a lower price than is now being paid mailloux said he said the lower cost will result from increased ef ficiencies he said that more uniform distribution of the work load among employes the use of more and better equipment and thorough training of nployees will increase efficiency he noted although the contract specifies maximum amount which cannot be ceeded the price paid by the university will vary with time as the company's costs vary costs incurred by the company will liry as a result of such things as in emental employe salary increases to mailloux the contract will continue until can illation by either party after sufficient notice is given mailloux explained he said that at present it appears likely that 60 days notice will be required before a party can cancel the contract he noted however the 60 day notification period is only tentative and is still under discussion mailloux said is more student interest m the forum this year than there has ever been said forum chairman raymond bell m an interview on thursday bell assistanlprofessor of education spoke m response to criticisms of the forum and commented on problems which the organizations faces bell said that last month's student caucus meeting at which attendance numbered m excess of 35 people and the recent open meeting on residence at which there were more than 65 people are encouraging evidence to him that there is more interest now m the forum than there has been since it was first initiated bell argued that students parents and faculty should receive more information regarding this year's tuition increase.he said he would like to see a decrease m the tuition payments but admitted that the forum budget subcommittee has not explored the issue yet according to bell the tuition increases have nothing to do with the recent university budget surplus he said the 568,000 surplus was brought about by certain maintenance items being left out of this year's original budget plan the fiscal policy of the university is a good one bell said while colleges throughout the country are having financial difficulties he said lehigh university is reasonably healthy bell explained that the forum has become the only vehicle through which student problems can be solved he said this has sidetracked settlement of student problems because the forum is geared gryphons propose review board the gryphon academic proposal developed last sunday at a special meeting calls for the formation of an academic review committee to review the academic progress of each gryphon said gary liddick 76 gryphon society president the committee would have the power to recommend that the gryphon consult with the committee be tutored or be suspended from the society due to poor academic progress liddick said he added that the committee would attempt to find the causes behind the low academic average before making its recom mendations to the gryphon involved dave sell 77 gryphon academic coordinator said this proposal was developed as an alternative to the dean of students office proposal which states a gryphon must maintain an academic average equal to the average of his class m his particular college according to sell dean of students william quay dicussed the proposal at a meeting thursday afternoon with those gryphons who originatedjt quay said he will not publicly announce his reactions to the gryphon's proposal until he meets with groups of approximately 12 gryphons m the next 7 to 10 days quay still feels there should be a higher minimum average although he is open to change and perhaps different alternatives according to a memorandum issued by liddick from thursday's meeting the proposal was distributed to all gryphons thursday night sell said each gryphon will inform his area coordinator of his reaction to it a meeting was scheduled for last night at which the proposal's originators gryphon area coordinators academic coordinators and executive board were to hear other gryphon opinions sell added liddick said he feels the proposal has a lot of merit a lot of things must be worked out before it can be put into use he ad ded chip gruver 77 gryphon area coor dinator said the proposal has always been necessary according to gruver the review board will be like a gryphon to a gryphon steve scheibe 77 also area coor dinator said the general feeling among the gryphons towards the proposal is pretty good scheibe said he believes the only thing it could do is help as it would provide academic aid for any gryphon needing it gryphon scott neilson 76 said i don't think that a grade requirement is necessary because i don't think grades determine your counseling abilities neilson added if there has to be an academic proposal this is a pretty good one gryphon elliot michael 76 said the gryphon proposal is much better than the dean of students office proposal it gives us a chance to pick the best qualified applicant and if he has academic troubles we can help him by tutoring " he said with quay's proposal michael added the gryphons might have to turn away otherwise qualified applicants letter to edpol queries legality of exam motions by donna frabotta a letter questioning the legality of saturday quizzes on the grounds that the procedures regulations and re quirements pr&r guidelines do not give permission for such quizzes has been sent by hildy shandell 77 acting chairman of the forum subcommittee on academic regulations to the educational policy committee edpol shandell said she wrote the letter as a formalization of a discussion she had with arthur gould edpol chairman and associate dean of the college of engineering and physical sciences and curtis clump professor of chemistry and edpol member the letter was also the result of a complaint brought from the sac to shandell the forum ombudsman on the issue of 4 o'clock and saturday
