handerhan a brown and white poll of members of the class of 1979 shows that a majority of the freshmen feel there are not enough opportunities at lehigh to meet women on the other hand more than 97 per cent of the freshmen women feel that there are enough opportunities to meet men the poll conducted by brown and white staff members m early october was a general survey of freshmen attitudes toward living at lehigh the poll has a 95 per cent confidence level that the responses are within five percentage points of the true percentage for the freshman class twenty-five per cent of the freshmen said they are not pleased with the social life at lehigh over 83 per cent of the women were pleased with the lehigh social life while 71.2 per cent of the men were pleased only 20.59 per cent of the freshmen women said they would consider joining a sorority of the freshman men 74.46 per cent said they would consider joining a fraternity asked do you think gryphons serve a useful purpose 87.7 per cent of the fresh men responded affirmatively over 35 per cent of the freshmen said they disagree with the university's stand on marijuana smoking m the dorms more than 21 per cent of the proposal by ellen feldman an alternative to the recent proposal concerning gryphons grade averages was drafted by a select group of gryphons at a special meeting sunday night according to dave sell 77 gryphon academic coordinator the group consisted of gryphon academic coordinators com mittee chairmen and three randomly selected sophomores sell said the brown and white was barred from the meeting sell said this was because it was just a routine meeting we didn't think we had anything concrete according to a reliable source the proposal's basic idea is that gryphons rather than the dean of student office should monitor their own progress i think the proposal is a way to make academics a more integral part of the gryphon society without setting an ar bitrary grade point average as a cutoff point one gryphon m attendance at the meeting said the new proposal cannot be announced publicly before it is presented to the gryphon society on monday sell said the grade average dispute arose over a proposal made by the dean of students office to raise the required grade average of a gryphon from the existing 2.0 to the grade average of his class m his particular college william quay dean of students said this proposal originated from a decision made by the dean of students office stating that a gryphon's grade average must meet the university average on friday oct 17 quay met with the gryphon area coordinators executive board and sell to inform them of his office's decision the reaction of the gryphons at this meeting towards the decision was not favorable quay said he said he was surprised that they were so shocked as a result of their reaction quay said he changed the decision to the psoposal as it now stands according to one gryphon the real issue at stake isn't the cum dispute but how the dean of students will rule the gryphons feel that they do not have any input m the dean of students office's decisions he said jimmy breslln award-winning reporter and more recently a novelist will make an appearance at the university nov 11 to speak on tavern talk role of tuition in budgeting to increase by linda bondemore second m a series the percentage contributed by tuition to the university budget will continue to increase according to elmer glick vice president and treasurer university provost albert zettlemoyer said the tremendous inflationary fluc tuations necessitate the rise m tuition percentage this tuition seems to be the main place where private schools have to look when trying to meet rising inflationary pressures said richard spriggs vice president of administration we try to maximize the different sources of in come he said adding that tuition in creases do not rise at the same rate as do inflationary costs lehigh is an employer of people as well as an educational institution said spriggs these employes live m the same inflationary milieu as those paying the maintenance contract elicits mixed feelings by lee lusardi and sue chodakewitz fifteen maintenance and custodial personnel interviewed at random by the brown and white indicate mixed feelings exist regarding the university's new contract with the allied maintenance corporation approximately 200 employes now working for the university will be em ployed by allied as of tomorrow many employes m the department of buildings and grounds said they are dissatisfied with their present working conditions they added they do not un derstand how the university will save money by the contract with allied several maids m the residence halls expressed satisfaction with the univer sity's past handling of campus custodial services they said they hoped they will continue to be satisfied under the new contract all employes interviewed refused to be identified saying they were afraid their comments might be used against them m their jobs the majority of the grounds workmen interviewed said they believe the only way to cut costs would be to ask the workers to take on heavier loads if we're going to be paid the same and they say no one will be fired yet new advisers will be coming m how are they going to save money said one grounds employe some employes said buildings and grounds is run inefficiently at times half the time we end up doing double work around here said one employee he gave an example of a crew of workers who moved a 20 by 40 stage from the
