from the department of modern gn languages was aborted after a ing committee recommended against iction ministration officials told members of modern foreign language depart t's visiting committee on mar 3 of the proposed issuance of terminal contracts to te the untenured members of the depart -^ ment the action came five days after anje c van der naald associate professor lof spanish wrote a letter to john hunt dean of the college of arts and science m which she warned that we would im poverish our department by the dismissal of our junior colleagues the visiting committee arrived at the university on march 2 to examine the weaknesses and strengths of the depart ment upon being told of the proposal to give terminal contracts to the untenured members the committee argued strongly against this proposal according to anna herz chairman of the foreign language department at the time they recom mended that the untenured members should be retained as they were considered to be the backbone of the department herz said when the six members of the committee left they felt they had bought time for the untenured members in an interview with the brown and white hunt said the exact rec ommendations of the committee would be given to university president w deming lewis lewis could not be reached for comment herz said she wanted to quit as chair man of the department last october but hunt asked her to stay on until she com pleted her term when asked why she wanted to quit herz said hunt kept putting her off every time she wanted to speak to him on issues concerning departmental matters she added that hunt consulted other members of the department on these departmental matters and not her in an october meeting hunt said he did ask herz to stay on as chairman but did not comment on whether he kept refusing to see her after this meeting during the interim period between march 3 and may 1 herz asked adminis tration officials for a one semester leave of absence she also asked not to be con sidered to continue as chairman hunt said van der naald's name was added on may 1 to the list of other people being considered as possible choices to replace herz hunt said he did tell van der naald at anna herz glick reports 568,000 surplus during last academic year preliminary figures now available prior to the completion of the audit show a net balance of income over expenses of 568,000 at the end of the fiscal year 1974 75 said elmer glick university vice president and treasurer last december university president w deming lewis predicted that lehigh would run a 300,000 surplus during the 74 75 academic year the excess for the year 1973-74 was 463,000 this unexpected result arose from a number of sources mainly the higher than anticipated interest rates available during the year the net balance for fiscal 1974-75 is not substantial m proportion to the total budget which was less than 2.5 percent glick said this net balance will of course be used for the benefit of the university glick said recent budget surpluses will be used towards reducing future tuition increases according to harold mohler chairman of the board of trustees students however can expect a 350 annual rise m tuition and living expenses m the future he said the very substantial increases m costs m recent years made it possible to avoid deficits m these years only by extensive economics the result is that there are many areas that can benefit from a significant increase m the money made available for them glick added glick emphasized that those needs would be much greater than this net balance from the last fiscal year and management would require that some part be set aside m a reserve account for future operating contingencies the administration is currently formulating proposals for a number of special non recurring academic appropriations to respond to some of these needs glick said those proposals will be submitted to the board of trustees m october david amidon beer against all classes on saturday by bill kimball saturday classes are not necessary according to ferdinand beer professor and chairman of the department of mechanical engineering and mechanics and chairman of the local chapter of american association of university professors aaup beer said he agrees that saturday morning classes would reduce conflicts but he added you might as well have saturday afternoon and night classes along with sunday classes to reduce even more conflicts according to beer the controversy is not about the fact that conflicts would be reduced but is over the whole idea of having classes on saturday beer said this country has had a custom of a five amidon states opposition to high-rise construction by cheryl winters david amidon urban studies lecturer and former member of the citizens for constructive renewal is not m favor of building a senior citizen high-rise m the planned location adjacent to campus the high-rise will consist of 150 residential units and one floor of com mercial space a senior citizens center is proposed for the second floor amidon said he believes there is no reason to put the high-rise m a block full of buildings that must be torn down instead he said it should be possible to find a largely unoccupied site amidon said public housing is not the answer for helping the underprivileged if you're going to do something for underprivileged people you should distribute subsidy money directly to the individual and not m the form of a building project which is a subsidy of overpriced construction labor he said jim mccarthy bethlehem senior city planner told members of the south side senior citizens center last week that two improvement programs will soon be m operation m addition to the construction of the high-rise the first program is a loan and grant plan which will provide money to south side residents for improving their homes the other plan calls for the creation of a senior assistance maintenance program under which three or four men will provide free labor to those eligible for the grant the resident will only pay for the building materials according to mccarthy this program should begin m about a week the bethlehem high-rise proposal will be submitted to housing and urban development hud on oct 28 and mccarthy said should find little or no competition for the funds anything done to this neighborhood is an improvement said one fourth st merchant concerning the construction of the high-rise most of the 11 merchants interviewed by the brown and white said they would like to see the area cleaned up and redeveloped many of the tradesmen interviewed felt their businesses would not be affected by the new influx of people however richard ritter owner of ritter phar macy said he believes his store will probably gain new customers ritter added that the high-rise will help m the see language page 8 see beer page 9 see construction page 8 inside ass game p 9
