lehigh university brown and white 215-866-0331 vol 87 — no 7 bethlehem pa tuesday september 30 1975 victory over penn ends 86-year jinx by dan solis-cohen for the first time since 1889 the engineer gridders defeated the university of pennsylvania the 34-23 victory set up by a 21-point outburst m the fourth quarter ended a 34-game losing streak against the quakers the defense led by linebackers john healy and jerry mullane provided the turning point that led the engineers to victory healy stopped perm fullback jack wixted on a crucial third and one play on the perm 29 forcing the quakers to punt with their three point lead m jeopardy jimmy dutt's 17-yard punt return gave the engineers good field position at the perm 43 it took the gridders eight plays to score the go-ahead touchdown joe sterrett's 10-yard scoring pass to mark weaver with less than two minutes remaining m the game put the engineers ahead to stay weaver personally ac counted for 19 of the gridders 34 points on two touchdowns two field goals and an extra point following weaver's kickoff into the end zone perm was forced to come out throwing but bob graustein's first down pass intended for steve hasselback was intercepted by engineer defensive back lyle hogg who had just come into the game for the injured jimmy dutt hogg's interception gave the engineers a first down on the quaker 32-yard line on the first play rod gardner burst by a shocked perm defense for 22 yards one play later gardner rambled up the middle for five yards when he was hit and fumbled into the end zone right into the waiting hands of ' halfback dave aprill greg pierog booted the extra point to give lehigh a 34 23 lead perm came right back and appeared to be headed for a score when graustein fumbled and the ball was recovered by freshman defensive tackle jim piec zynski the engineers ran out the remaining seconds it was also the first victory over perm m 11 tries for head coach fred dunlap the game appeared at first to be another typical penn-lehigh affair m which the engineers always find a way to lose the lehigh offense was stalled all afternoon on 11 illegal motion penalties on backs and linemen even more costly were the five turnovers the engineers committed surprisingly enough the game started out as a defensive struggle both teams were forced to punt on their first two possessions perm's second punt however was downed on the lehigh 5-yard line after another lehigh punt the quakers marched 62 yards on four plays to take a 7 0 lead towards the end of the first quarter the score came on halfback craig ren frow's 33-yard burst up the middle the rest of the first half was a kicking duel between the quakers brazilian soccer-style import tim mazzetti and lehigh's all-purpose back mark weaver on through the forum m a very strong and unified student appeal according to robert sarubbi associate professor of mechanics and chairman of the academic environment committee under forum leadership a proposal concerning saturday quizzes should be brought before the educational policy committee edpol m order that they may reverse their previous decision instating the quizzes he added saturday quizzes were slated by edpol to begin this semester several depart ments had requested another time for the conflicting 4 p.m quizzes given m various courses the freshman-sophomore grading subcommittee chaired by robert gallagher associate dean of the college of engineering which resolved such con flicts proposed to edpol that a different time be chosen for the 4 p.m quizzes the time was not specified sarubbi said adding it was just understood it would happen that way on saturday there were the usual pleas by the athletic music and drama departments not to schedule academic functions on saturday sarubbi said he said the terminal contracts considered rejected as tenure solution by lew goldstein the placing of non-tenured members of the modern foreign language department on terminal contracts was considered last spring and rejected according to john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciencesm this proposal along with other alternatives was considered during ad ministrative deliberations on a new department chairman hunt said that during consultations with anna herz then department chairman this alternative was put forward for a reaction instead of the process of deliberation going forward at that point this was publicly spread abroad that an ad ministrative decision had been reached when m fact it had not hunt said by the time the proposal had mistakenly been received as a decision hunt said it had been abandoned i deeply regret the cruelty the non tenured members of the department were subjected to by the irresponsible leaking of misinformation hunt said i cannot blame them for being upset he said i am upset too that a responsible process of deliberation was interrupted and prematurely and prejudicially reported m such a way as to reflect ad versely upon faculty about whom no ad verse attitudes were or are held within the administration he added other people were considered for the department chairmanship hunt said he added that the proposal was discussed with these persons and dr herz from a reliable source the brown and white has learned that john van eerde professor of romance languages and literature and anje c van der naald associate professor of spanish were originally being considered as climate ottervik said we will not need replacements for herz and not joseph maurer the current chairman pro tern of the department maurer had decided that he no longer wanted to be chairman of the classics department and had requested that necessary arrangements be made hunt said he added that as of july 1 maurer was no longer chairman and was asked by university president w deming lewis to take the chairmanship of the foreign language department prior to announcement of maurer's new position as associate dean for languages b&w photo by aachugh john hunt building renovation funds reduced by 8.6 million by ron winters building and renovation funds totaling 8.6 million have been cut out of new century fund phase ii projects the administrative decision was announced to the forum priorities planning and development committee pp&d by eric ottervik vice president for planning last may phase ii originally included 7.6 million to be used for the renovation of the chandler chemistry building after the completion of the seely g mudd building ottervik said in addition this sum was to include an allocation for a new annex to williams hall allocation of 1 million was to be directed toward the construction of an addition to drown hall he said dropping the two projects ottervik continued would free 8.6 million which could be used for other phase ii projects he emphasized that these two projects were only part of phase ii and other building plans are not affected by these particular decisions ottervik added that the reason for the change m plans stems to the ceiling on the number of undergraduate students at tending the university enrollment will stop at 4,000 students he said whenever possible we will renovate existing buildings rather than construct new ones because of the current economic the extra square feet when we don't have extra people he added ottervik added that as soon as possible the
