lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday september 23 1975 215-866-0331 vol 87 — no 5 cable tv installation possible for future centennial residents by ed fiedler e'able television and radio in every idence hall room on campus may be a lity within the next few years providing the idea gets some immediate support from centennial residents said william quay dean of students results are due in today from the presidents of residence halls in the cen tennial i and ii complexes on whether students living there would be willing to have an extra 7.50 per semester added onto their residence halls bills quay said that fee which amounts to 50 cents per week is half the normal subscription rate of the service electric cable tv company for that fee each room would be wired to receive 12 television channels from new york philadelphia wilkes-barre and the lehigh valley as well as fm signals from the latter three areas the cable would also carry television stations wltn and wlrn-tv and radio stations wlvr-fm in stereo and wlrn students could also take advantage of service electric's home box office package which provides recent movies and extra tv channels the system proposal has received tentative approval from quay he says he will support the system if feedback from centennial residents is favorable as all residents there will be affected it's one of those things you can't do on an individual basis quay said it's a basic service like lounges everyone pays for it even if not everybody can use it the system was designed last spring by chris christian 76 business manager of wltn and bob seidel 75 active in the construction of wltn according to their proposal the total cost for the system is estimated at 11,000 for both centennial complexes if they are done at the same time the money to install the system would come from a university loan to wltn the 7.50 per semester fee would be used to pay off the loan centennial i and ii were chosen because the cable can be fed to each room through existing telephone conduits in those buildings quay added that other buildings may get the service if everything works out well in the initial installation the proposal for the system submitted by seidel and christian mentions that the system will provide a medium for distribution of important local events and educational programming on campus we've got to be realistic quay noted the educational proposal has been exaggerated to some degree the students may just want the system to watch games or soap operas he said there is nothing wrong with using tv for recreation quay said once the system is installed broadcasting of lectures films and other educational material to each room on campus will be possible by sally velthaus market value of endowment
