bethlehem pa tuesday september 9 1975 866-0331 brown and white vol 87 — no 1 frick loses financial assistance president lewis reviews action by jeff bloom the university's committee on un dergraduate financial aid has terminated all financial assistance given to mike frick cq-captain elect of the lehigh wrestling squad and a 1974 national champion the action almost led frick to transfer to slippery rock college the committee will act on a second frick appeal tomorrow last june the financial aid committee cut off all aid to frick because of his poor academic record prior to this frick had been warned by the committee m a letter that if there was not an improvement m his academic standing the committee would take the action it did in late august the committee denied an appeal made by frick wrestling coach thad turner spoke with frick on aug 30 and suggested frick file a petition to the committee requesting a grant of a cancelable loan frick told turner he would have to think about it the next day frick telephoned turner at home and said he was transferring to slippery rock turner also received a phone call from the slippery rock varsity wrestling coach according to turner frick telephoned him again on sept 3 from slippery rock and said coach i want to come back university president w deming lewis decided to intervene into the matter and called a meeting with william quay dean of students and chairman of the com mittee william stanford director of financial aid william leckonby director of athletics preston parr vice president and dean for student affairs ; and turner the meeting was held friday m the president's office a reliable source has told the brown and white that lewis initially told this group he would overturn the financial aid committee decision because of frick's value to the university but upon being more completely briefed oh frick's academic record lewis retreated from this position out of this meeting instead came a suggestion to frick that he once again petition for financial assistance this time m the form of a loan cancellation a loan cancellation would mean that frick would be given financial assistance m the form of a loan which he would not have to repay if he met academic requirements this semester established by the committee in an interview lewis denied saying he would override the financial aid com mittee decision but said he merely wanted mike frick two residence officials resign by martin baron consolidation of the residence halls ) office into the dean of students office got off to a troubled start this summer as two deans of residence announced their resignations r peter shurtleff , director of residence halls resigned effective july i the date consolidation took effect assistant director of residence halls james a tiefenbrunn resigned exactly two months consolidation of the residence operation into the dean of students office under william quay was announced m late january after the early retirement on jan 1 of clarence b campbell as dean of residence the merger figured heavily m the resignations of shurtleff and tiefen brunn i wasn't satisfied with the way reorganization was going and i felt i had no alternative shurtleff said shurtleff expressed opposition to the merger when it was first considered but he declined to specify reasons for his recent dissatisfaction with the setup i didn't feel that i could continue working m residence halls under the new circumstances as they were outlined to me shurtleff said i feel no animosity toward lehigh as a university . i sin cerely miss the students quay had outlined on march 3 a plan to have two co-equal heads of residence halls shurtleff would be director of operations and sharon drager assistant dean of students would have been director of personnel with the resignations drager who was the residence complex coor dinator at the university of delaware takes full charge of residence operations the brown and white has learned that shurtleff felt conditions of the consol idation were being violated a reliable source said one of the conditions was that , quay would consult with shurtleff on decisions affecting received a one semester leave of absence from the university the leave effective september 1 was an nounced by university president w deming i^wis and provost and vice president albert zettlemoyer m a memorandum on august 11 robert stout dean of the graduate school has replaced stoops until further notice according to the memorandum the purpose of this replacement is to provide better coordination of the ac tivities and long-range planning of the school of education with those of all other graduate programs of the university the memorandum slates stoops joined the university m 1959 and has been dean of the school of education since its creation m 1966 according to zettlemoyer a leave of absence for stoops was long overdue stoops worked almost 13 years without a rest zettlemoyer said stoops has expressed his appreciation for the leave zettlemoyer said he said that while on leave stoops will continue work on two textbooks as well as visit other schools his leave may be extended beyond one glose university accountant determined the accounts appear to present accurately the revenues and expenditures as recorded the sac audit was ordered m april by the dean of students office as a result of several complaints made directly and indirectly to the dean's office about the possibility that funds from the oct 18 sha na-na concert had been mishandled assistant dean of students sharon drager said last april at that time drager was faculty advisor to the sac dean of students robert reeves is now serving as temporary advisor while positions within the university are under change although drager originally said results of the audit would be released by may 2 delays m getting the needed approval to begin the audit delayed its completion date its results were released june 13 approval from dean and vice president for student affairs preston parr and vice president and treasurer elmer glick was needed drager had said adding that parr's illness at that time caused a delay m the process in the four-page audit summary glose suggested tighter accounting controls and the implementation of additional procedures to guard against possible future shortcomings see frick page 16 see
