lehich university brown and white vol 88 — no 51 beth may 6 1977 215-866i-0331 trustees urged to study libraries by jerry miller tuesday the forum called on the university board of trustees to reaffirm the essential role of the library for lehigh university the resolution also urged the trustees to adopt the priorities outlined m the forum's library report in other business the forum heard committee reports for the administration and academic environment committees the chairmen of each committee outlined the structure and function of their respective subcommittee systems the meeting was recessed monday afternoon after the adoption of a resolution that called on the trustees to reconsider the construction of the planned 3.5 million indoor arena bruce rosenthal 78 chairman of the priorities planning and development committee pp&d presented the library report and resolution to the forum rosenthal stressed several priorities outlined m the report including alleviation of the space shortage m the two libraries he said the library needs flexible space that could be used with library technology that will not be developed until the 1980s linderman library should be cleared of non-library offices and users rosenthal said noting that space must be made m the library system for at least 200,000 new volumes m the next decade the con version of the mart library breezeway into shelving space establishment of departmental libraries and compact shelving for books are not desirable alternatives rosenthal said but are necessary it will be at least 10 years before a new library can be built he ex plained air conditioning to control the humidity and temperature m the library two fac tors that affect book life is needed m linderman rosenthal said the forum also granted rosenthal and his committee the right to make editorial changes m the report to make it more hard to figure — director of admissions samuel missimer was surprised that 114 more students accepted admissions offers than the university had anticipated for the first time m his 27 years m the admissions office missimer will not be con sulting the waiting list athletic director describes need for indoor arena by peg pfenninger and ellen feldman an indoor arena definitely is needed by the university according to william leckonby director of athletics leckonby said an arena would be useful to both the university and the community grace hall's physical condition and age restricts events that can be held there he continued curtis clump associate dean of the engineering and physical sciences college said he would like to see money raised for the arena spent on equipment renovations and the improvement of library facilities clump was chairman of the forum m 1971 when the group voted against arena plans clump said he does not approve of plans for the arena because all funds necessary for construction are not yet available only 2.5 million has been raised of the 3.5 million needed to obtain the additional funds money will be shifted around and academic areas will be hurt he said plans for construction of a 3.5-million indoor arena m saucon valley were ap proved april 21 by the university board of trustees construction of the 6,000-seat facility which is a part of the university's athletic and convocation center acc complex is scheduled to begin this fall monday forum viii students than originally ex pected according to the latest figures compiled by the university's office of admission the university's residence halls system would not be able to ac comodate most of those additional students i am trying to figure out what hap pened said samuel missimer director of admissions the admissions office sent out 3100 offers to prospective freshmen and 1189 accepted this figure includes all who placed a 50 deposit by may 1 the deadline for accepting an offer of admission the university had budgeted for 1075 students m the incoming freshman class we guarantee all freshmen housing provided they get their housing in formation statement back to us by june 1 said robert reeves assistant dean of students the statement includes a 100 deposit the residence halls system has 997 beds reserved for freshman next year he said all other spaces are committed to upperclassmen he continued reeves said the residence halls system is already over capacity and any large increase m freshmen would make it a lot worse reeves said his options are very limited missimer said that usually some prospective freshmen withdraw by june 1 and then more withdraw during the summer last year he continued 90 in coming freshmen withdrew in that in stance the admissions office refers to the waiting list however for the first time m the 27 years that missimer has been m the ad missions office he said the waiting list will not be used we had a jump m the acceptance ratio when we least expected it missimer said college theatre church may soon be demolished by donna frabotta senior reporter the university soon may permit the buildings on its lot at 4th and vine streets to be torn down so that the land can be analyzed prior to construction of a highrise apartment complex the college theater and an abandoned church now stand on the lot the demolition plans only will be ap proved after the project's developers arrange for financing of the highrise and meet specifications set down by the university according to eric ottervik vice president for planning ottervik met yesterday with the university attorney to review initial contract arrangements between the university and developers ottervik said he is guardedly op timistic about the prospects for signing an agreement to lease space for students m the highrise he said he did not know whether or not the
