expressed varying reactions to trustee approval of plans for construction of a 3.5-million indoor arena m saucon valley brian finn 77 forum viii chairman denounced the project calling it a white elephant forum opposition to the project has not changed since the body voted m 1971 to oppose construction of the arena finn said bruce rosenthal 78 chairman of the forum priorities planning and development pp&d committee said he also does not agree with the trustees decision to build the arena rosenthal noted the trustees are the final authority m the matter if they want to build it it's their right he said dean of students william quay said he thought the complex would have tremendous value m terms of attracting students to the university lehigh is way behind other comparable schools m the space it has for recreational facilities he said presently not enough space exists for intramurals and intercollegiate activities and even with the arena the university will be behind the national average quay said the arena is not out of balance with other priorities he stated quay was chairman of the program committee which m 1972 defined the requirements for the facilities construction of the arena which is part of the university's athletic and con vocation center acc complex is scheduled to begin this fall the arena should be ready for use about two years after construction is begun according to eric ottervik vice president for planning the university is currently looking for a contractor to build the complex the arena will have 6,000 permanent seats it will be used for spectator sports particulary wrestling and basketball and a variety of campus and public events early this semester administrators estimated it would cost approximately 6 million to construct the arena as originally designed in 1971 the forum passed a report which opposed construction of the facilities arguing that money could better be used for academic projects present plans for the arena represent a major redesign of the project ottervik said brian finn 78-79 275 tuition hike projected by lee ann lusardi tuition could increase by 275 for the 1978-79 school year according to elmer glick university treasurer and vice president room rates may increase by 75 and board by 50 he said glick presented these projections to the board of trustees at its april 21 meeting the increases would bring tuition to 4,100 room to 845 and board to 930 glick emphasized that no official projection exists m regard to tuition room and board hikes he explained his budget analysis for 1978-79 was based on a computer projection done by eric ot tervik vice president for planning ottervik said he runs dozens of different computer projections every year each time adjusting different variables to see how various assumptions affect the budget the cost of attending the university will be approximately the same for the next few years according to ottervik but it's hard to believe it would be less at some point it's probably going to be necessary to raise that 275 tuition in crease to 300 but we're going to fight it as long as we can he said last year ottervik's computer projection forecast a 250 tuition increase and a 100 room and board increase for elmer glick class data to be attached to transcripts by joe burke a university information sheet will be attached to the transcripts of graduating seniors at their request the report which is basically a profile of the academic records of the graduating class will be included with a senior's job application the sheet will include details of the senior class's academic background and grade distributions the decision to release the sheet was made wednesday by the faculty com mittee on educational policy edpol the report stated many employers and graduate school admissions officers have advised the university that the academic records presented by its graduating seniors may not fully reflect the accomplishments of these students five sections of data are included on the sheet a profile of the graduating class in cluding the number who entered as fresh men and the class's average sat scores as opposed to the national average for that year the cumulative average for each college at the end of the graduating class's junior year percentage grade distribution per letter grade the number of degrees awarded m each college to the previous graduating class the percentage m each college of the previous year's graduates who furthered their studies the data sheet is the result of a proposal by scott lochner 78 a forum vh member now studying m london lochner proposed nationwide grade disclosure so that students at schools which fight grade inflation would not be hampered m finding jobs or m furthering their education amidon granted tenure as lecturer by dennis sprick desk editor david amidon lecturer m urban studies and former forum chairman was granted tenure by the university it was announced april 25 at the last faculty meeting of the semester of the college of arts and science according to the provost's office this was the first time a lecturer ever has been given tenure at the university also given tenure and promoted to the rank of associate professor were roger simon history edwin kay psychology barbara frankel social relations and michael hodges international relations amidon first joined the university staff m 1963 and was appointed history depart ment instructor m 1965 in april 1970 history department chairman lawrence leder had amidon dismissed for failure to complete his ph.d requirements amidon had been given several extensions to complete his doc toral dissertation in the fall of 1969 when he still had not finished his thesis he was granted a dec 1 deadline which was extended to april 1 1970 at the time of his dismissal amidon supposedly was eligible for tenure ac cording to the 1940 statement of the principles on academic freedom and tenure of the american association of university professors aaup , a full-time instructor should receive tenure after a probationary seven-year teaching period university tenure policy however differs with that of aaup according to procedures regulations and requirements pr&r an assistant professor receives continuous tenure after a seven-year teaching period and is promoted to the rank of associate professor an instructor who serves seven years at the university is promoted to assistant professor pr&r stated after amidon's expulsion he was given a position for the 1970-71 academic year m the urban studies research center in april 1971 university president deming lewis referred the case of amidon's future university status to the faculty com mittee on personnel at that time eli sch wartz professor of economics and finance and committee chairman said lewis wished the committee to consider mr amidon's scholarly and potential scholarly contributions to lehigh and lehigh students and his relationship to the overall university the university com munity and its departments the committee decided to make amidon lecturer m urban studies according to pr&r the initial appointment and
