editor-in-chief differing views of the problems con fronting the university and the issues which should be pursued by next year's forum have been expressed by the three announced candidates for the position of forum vhi chairman in separate interviews wednesday roger loeb assistant professor of psychology bruce rosenthal 78 and brian finn 77 answered questions concerning the university's future major issues which should be addressed by next year's forum and their individual qualifications forum officer elections are scheduled for tomorrow lawrence leder chairman of the history department refused to be in terviewed by members of the brown and white editorial board leder who has expressed his interest m the forum vih chair said that he has not decided whether he will run for the post see story page 4 ) loeb said that m the next 10 years two of the most pressing problems facing the university would be the growing number of tenured faculty members and possible increased governmental regulations which could be difficult for the university to meet increasing competition with state in stitutions and a declining pool of qualified student candidates would be among the most important problems m the univer sity's future rosenthal said finn said that the university might have to reevaluate the need for a strong in tercollegiate athletic program m light of future financial constraints the university will also have to consider new library and residence facilities if it is to continue attracting qualified students and faculty he said all three candidates stated that a primary problem facing the university m the future would be the financial survival of the institution loeb said that next year the major issues before the forum would be the faculty tenure problem and the question of bruce rosenthal brian finn roger loeb alumnus trustee cites cooperation as necessary key to viable forum by anne fleming news editor the forum will function as a viable and powerful institution only if all constituent groups of the university community make a contribution reginald jennings 70 young alumnus trustee told members of outgoing forum vii and newly elected forum viii at the annual forum convocation tuesday night more than 100 persons attended only rigidness inflexibility and inability to adjust to changing times will lead to the forum's demise jennings said he charged the faculty with not making use of the forum thereby weakening its potential effectiveness it seems to me the faculty has not utilized the forum he said i don't see the depth of student involvement m campus con cerns which was manifest m the 605 jennings said he said he sees the problem of financial aid minority integration into all levels of the university and lack of space m linderman library as crucial issues facing the university m the next 10 years jennings called on the university to redirect the thrust of minority recruitment more efforts should be made to recruit middle class blacks like myself who would be more attracted to lehigh than blacks from the inner city and deep south jennings said he said inner city minorities have a more difficult time adjusting to the university and recruiting efforts m these areas are not very productive as a student at the university jennings was active m pro moting the black cause and was responsible for the formation of the organization for the enhancement of afromanities now the b&w photo by savchak reginald jennings addressing the forum formal student input suggested for tenure by jerry miller the university should create a formal device to make use of student input on faculty tenure decisions according to ferdinand beer chairman of the mechanical engineering department beer former president of the univer sity's chapter of the american association of university professors aaup said student course evaluations created by the forum do not help department chairmen m making tenure recommendations the evaluations beer said only gauge the difficulty of courses and student interest m them last year beer charged university provost albert zettlemoyer with a lack of leadership on implementing student evaluations of teachers m tenure decisions beer said wednesday that his position has not changed responding to beer's suggestion zet tlemoyer said student involvement m tenure decisions is a faculty responsibility the provost cannot compel student in volvement m the matter he said em phasizing that tenure recommendations are m the faculty's domain zettlemoyer noted the recent forum resolution requesting department heads to compile existing guidelines for student involvement m tenure decisions for presentation to the forum m the fall he said he felt this was a step m the right direction faculty opinion varies concerning the proper role of student input m the tenure process zettlemoyer said beer last year also criticized forum inaction on its 1975 tenure report written by sutton monro professor of industrial engineering the report called for student input m tenure decisions through teacher evaluations and suggested ways to deal with increased student demand for in struction m specific areas monro said wednesday he feels the criticisms and recommendations made m the report are still valid students do have more access to the tenure process through teacher-student communications and the course evaluations monro said but the provost as an administrator is not in volved enough m academic processes the current practice of contracting untenured research staffs is a good one monro said and should be extended to the hiring of consultants m departments and research centers aaup report statistics show the per centage of tenured full time faculty those who spend at least 50 per cent of their time m the classroom has increased ap proximately 12 per cent over the last decade in 1966 slightly more than 50 per cent of the 240-member faculty was tenured according to
