lehigh university brown and white vol.bb no 43 bethlehem pa tuesday april 5 1977 215-866-0331 administration negotiating with highrise developers for added housing space by ed bogucz editor-in-chief the administration is negotiating an agreement with a group of private developers which could solve the university's housing shortage the brown and white has learned under a possible agreement the would construct a high-rise pbousing complex on the site of the university-owned college theater on w 4th street the university would then guarantee that 200 students live m the highrise possibly starting as early as september 1978 i an agreement between the university md the developers could come within the lext week to 10 days according to eric tttervik vice president for planning if an igreement takes much longer the milding probably could not be constructed iy the september 1978 goal he explained developers may not want to postpone onstruction beyond that time because tuilding costs would increase he con inued both parties would like to see omething happen he said present proposals call for the complex to be nine or 10 floors five of which would be leased to the university for student housing the highrise would also contain several floors of apartments rented to area citizens the lower floors of the building could contain commercial space ottervik said that the highrise is the only feasible alternative at this point to meet student housing needs the forum residence subcommittee reported m november that the university's residence system would be more than 200 spaces short next year several student leaders who have seen plans for the building are not satisfied with the proposal as it stands now there are still a lot of unanswered questions said students home a group of private developers is interested m constructing an apartment complex on the site of the university-owned college theater building the hi-rise could possibly house 200 students relieving the university's housing shortage 4 forum chair candidates disagree on faculty apathy by ken bandler managing editor forum viii chairman candidate roger loeb's proposal for increasing faculty involvement m the forum is guaranteed to convert forum viii into the last of its kind to make it the end of a noble ex periment said opponent lawrence leder history department chairman m a letter to the brown and white see letter pg 3 in separate interviews the four can didates for forum viii chairman ex pressed their plans for alleviating the problem of faculty apathy faculty at tendance at forum meetings this academic year has been consistently lower than that of students the four candidates for the forum viii chair are loeb leder and two students brian finn 77 and bruce rosenthal 78 when loeb an assistant professor of psychology announced his candidacy last week he said the only way to get the faculty members more involved is to make the forum relevant he said the forum should do more work m the areas of faculty hiring paying and tenure policies in simple and clear terms loeb is suggesting the quickest way for the forum to alienate the faculty to convert apathy into open hostility and to bring about the demise of the forum m short order leder stated m his letter he further pointed out m the letter that the forum constitution states the faculty shall have the primary responsi bility m the areas of faculty hiring status and tenure loeb said he was not suggesting that the hoedown the southern-style charlie daniels band played to an audience of ap proximately 2,400 friday night m grace hall cedric kushner promoter of the concert lost approximately 450 on the event for review see page 6 . samuel missimer charlie daniels concert causes loss for promoter by james co yle and bill kimball cedric kushner promoter of the charlie daniels band concert friday night lost approximately 450 on the concert ac cording to jack pariseau 78 student activities council sac president although 1,800 of the 2,500 tickets needed to break even were sold as of thursday night about 600 tickets were sold the last day said gary hirschberg 78 sac concert chairman many of the tickets were sold at the door at the higher price and this should help to offset any financial loss he said it is a loss but it is not catastrophic kushner said kushner could have made close to 2,000 on the concert if it had sold out hirschberg said however kushner seemed satisfied and expects to work with the sac m producing future concerts at the university hirschberg said since the promoter assumed financial responsibility for the concert the sac will not incur any loss kushner booked the band for three nights and overall he turned a profit pariseau said a large clean-up bill could possibly contribute to kushner's loss a large amount of trash and debris was left inside admissions adds full-time position for minorities by debbie kelly the office of admission has received budgetary approval from university president deming lewis to hire a full-time admissions counselor whose primary responsibility will be minority recruit ment according to samuel missimer director of admissions in a december press conference lewis included as one of his priorities the hiring of a full-time admissions counselor missimer said he is looking for someone who is a member of a minority group this is a prime requisite for the job he said the minority recruitment position has been a part-time job he said a need also exists at the university he continued for faculty and staff members with minority backgrounds so the needs of minority students can be understood better the admissions office has filed a notice for a job vacancy for july 1 at which time the graduate assistantship of cheryl sessoms the present part-time minority recruiter will terminate missimer said sessoms is a prime candidate for the job and will be qualified with a masters degree by july he said sessoms has done a fine job m
