lehigh university brown and white 215-866-0331 vol 88 — no 40 bethlehem pa friday march 25 1977 health service director appointed by jerry miller the appointment of a new director of health service effective june 1 was an nounced at the march 8 forum meeting by preston parr dean and vice president of student affairs at the meeting the forum also adopted three resolutions updating prior legislation dealing with the observation of religious holidays student involvement m the tenure process and new educational op portunities reports on academic dishonesty and the progress of the book store ad hoc committee were also presented to the forum dr carl r ruch has been appointed director of health services at the university parr said the position has been vacant since the resignation of dr p lawrence kreider last summer ruch an ailentown native will work full-time at the university beginning june 1 until then he will be at the university on a part-time basis spending the remainder of his time at rutgers university where he has served as medical director for the past 14 years the three resolutions adopted by the forum at the meeting were presented by the follow-up committee which reviews old forum legislation to determine how it may be made more effective one resolution urges the university to look into the establishment of educational opportunities that would begin m early january every year each program would run as long as the activity justified with academic credit determined by each college another resolution supported a recent faculty resolution urging that academic activities be scheduled m such a way as to avoid conflicts with major religious holidays the third adopted resolution deals with student involvement m the tenure process it recommends that each department and division report on existing guidelines for such involvement to their respective colleges it also recommends that these guidelines be made available to the forum by december 1977 the academic regulations committee presented its report on academic dishonesty to the forum the report discussed existing cheating problems at the university and suggested a number of solutions including more effective proc toring of exams the report contained no legislation william shade head of the bookstore ad hoc committee informed the forum of his committee's findings m a preliminary report shade said the major problem the bookstore faces concerns the procedure used to notify professors of out-of-stock and out-of-print books the administration should attempt to alter the present procedure to provide earlier warning to the faculty that ordered books are unavailable shade said forum vn's final meeting will be held march 30 at 4:10 p.m m the osbourne room of the university center forum viii student elections will take place april 4 and 5 carl r ruch dorm change considered by joanne woolsey the university board of trustees will consider a proposal to make williams house coed room-by-room at its april meeting the idea was first introduced m december of 1975 but was never approved by the board of trustees the proposal was discussed at a residence visiting committee meeting two weeks ago m which a study on coed housing and presentations by students and administrators were given the com mittee will present the proposal to the board of trustees which will then decide whether to vote on the issue hershel dorney assistant to the dean of students was asked to act as a con students voice unhappinesswlth health services sixty-six per cent of the university students surveyed said they are not satisfied with the services rendered by the health center m johnson hall according to the results of a recent questionnaire given by the student health advisory com mittee many of these students indicated a round-the-clock supervision m the health center by a nurse should be provided seventy-three per cent of the students said they are willing to pay a student health fee to help restore the round-the-clock nursing service that was discontinued because of budget cuts over the past four years the questionnaire revealed student interest m returning a full-time laboratory x-ray technician and a visiting psychiatrist who were both released also due to the budget cuts interest was also indicated m the establishment of trans portation to nearby st luke's conference concerning sex discrimination at the university sponsored by the affirmative action student affairs equal opportunity steering committee has been cancelled participants invited were not ready to make the kind of commitment necessary to the success of the workshop according to preston parr committee member and dean and vice president for student af fairs the purpose of the conference which was to be held this weekend at the kirkridge conference-workshop center m the poconos was to discuss the attitudes necessary to end sex discrimination at the university parr said representatives from the administration faculty residence halls women's caucus sororities the gryphon society and fraternities were invited to participate but the time of year was difficult for some people he explained barbara frankel a committee member and assistant professor of social relations suggested that the committee consider alternatives to the kirkridge workshop for some participants may have felt threatened by the sponsorship of the conference she said austin gavin committee chairman and executive consultant to the president suggested changing the sponsorship of the workshop from the affirmative action steering committee to some other university institution such as the forum specifically the student life committee parr said something on campus should be done about discrimination and the committee has a commitment to deal with the problem of sex discrimination at the university the committee is presently working toward completion of the self-evaluation report of the title ix of the education amendment of 1972 the report is a result of a study conducted by the university last semester to evaluate university policies and attitudes to determine minority and sex discrimination parr said the committee is con centrating on finishing revisions of the report by the end of this semester and has not had time to consider alternatives to the workshop see room-by-room
