lehigh university brown and white vol 88 — no 38 bethlehem pa thursday march 3 1977 215-866-0331 irs bares top university salaries lewis and rivlin top list most recent figures show by ed bogucz editor-in-chief salaries received by the university's five highest-paid employes from july 1970 to june 1975 have been released to the brown and white by the internal revenue service the data shows that from july 1972 to june 1975 the highest-paid employes generally received greater percentage salary increases than the average per centage increase awarded to faculty members continuing their service to the university the salaries of the five most highly paid employees are reported annually to the irs by the university on form 990 return of organization exempt from income tax the returns for the five year period were requested by the brown and white under the provisions of the freedom of information act under the act these records are available to any member of the public the top three positions on the list of highest-paid employes remained un changed between fiscal years 1971 and 1974 university president deming lewis topped the list of highest paid during the four-year period during fiscal year 1974 his compensation totalled 66,250.06 second during the period was ronald rivlin centennial university professor of mathematics and mechanics and director of the center for the application of mathematics rivlin received 63,732.22 m compensation during fiscal year 1974 albert zettlemoyer provost and vice president received a total compensation of 58,250.00 during fiscal year 1974 he was the third highest-paid university employe for each of the four fiscal years the earliest returns available to the brown and white were for fiscal year 1970 ronald rivlin deming lewis on-campus job recruiting best in years seeloff says by karen berry this appears to be the best year for on campus job recruiting since 1969 ac cording to eugene seeloff director of placement services as of yesterday 6,936 interviews have been scheduled for 342 employers a 10 per cent interview increase over last year seeloff noted the number of employers has increased by 59 over last year according to seeloff approximately 800 students will take on-campus interviews this year and another 200 will use the placement office for assistance m plan ning resumes and job strategies seeloff attributed brighter job prospects to the economy employers have more confidence m the economic outlook for 1977 and have a proportionately greater need for qualified people he said also he continued the competitive and costly nature of recruiting has caused many companies to cut down the number of campuses they visit they are ex panding efforts at those colleges where they have had success m the past he said the university graduate enjoys a good reputation m the general market place he explained recruiters are impressed by the caliber and overall quality of the students they interview and often com ment on the students seriousness and b&w photo by guckman open hearing dean of students william quay outlines the administration's scheme for preventing deficits at future rock concerts to a group of about 50 students monday afternoon at the table are sac presjdent jack pariseau left and nathan harris assistant dean of students and sac advisor see story page 5 news analysis to affirmative action ottervik said he described the quota as an irritant the number of undergraduate women enrolled at the university has consistently ex ceeded the quota set by the trustees since women were first admitted m 1971 if the quota is abolished the ad ministration estimates the number of women at the university probably would increase to only 1,000 from the current enrollment of 862 austin gavin executive consultant to the president explained the percentage of students m each college would remain the same if the quota was dropped 40 per cent m arts 40 per cent m engineering and 20 per cent m business because women women's total enrollment could top 1 000 in 1977-78 bydavearnesen senior reporter women may make up about 25 per cent of the undergraduate population next semester according to samuel missimer director of admission that's the current thinking among administrators he continued whether or not the board of trustees abolishes the women's admissions quota the total enrollment of women next semester could reach 1,000 the draft of the 10-year plan for the university recommends the quota be dropped according to eric ottervik vice president for planning trustee approval of the plan is required but the board must specifically sanction abolishing the quota because it was imposed by the board executive board members harold mohler kirk pendleton and edward curtis declined to comment on the proposal because it has not been discussed yet by the board president deming lewis will present the plan to the board at its -
