coaches new coaching staff takes charge of lehigh football mentors are guests of honor at enthusiastic meeting of organization address by dr emery vice president welcomes the incoming students to university this yea marks beginning of new regime which will have charge of lehigh's future gridiron destinies frank glick is new head coach personnel of the staff prospects for season mentors have had wide and va ried experience in ath letic world few veterans left fron previous years new men show promising form lehigh university's athletic com mittee after scouring the county during the summer months in search of a suitable man to fill the position as head football coach left vacant by the resignation of tom keady finally landed frank glick since coach glick assumed his du ties three weeks ago every lehigh man who has come into contact with the new iootball mentor is praising the selection of the athletic com mittee frank glick lehigh university opened its doors ior the beginning of its 56th academic year at the formal open ing exercises on wednesday after noon in packer memorial chapel the building was taxed to its ca pacity to accommodate the student body and their friends and rela tives after the singing of a hymn and a short prayer by the rev j i b lamed rector of the church of the nativity dr emery deliv ered the opening address he gave a brief history of the founding of the college describing its small be ginning and showing how from a small institution it has grown to its present size he then turned his attention to the students welcom ing both old and new giving to the new a little friendly advice he reminded them of the purpose of coming to college t/f"fcefolgh staa dards and of what would be expect ed of them in the years to come he emphasized the point that the distractions of modern college life cause a man to forget the real rea son for his coining at the conclu [ sion of his address dr emery an nounced that the chemical labora 1 tory by action of the trustees had i been named the william h chand 1 ler chemical laboratory in honor j of professor chandler's thirty-five years of service as professor of chemistry 1 dr emery said in part : these exercises are the begin ning of the fifty-sixth year of le 1 high's history on september ist 1866 a small group of people head ed by asa packer his fellow trus tees the original faculty of four professors and forty students met j to inaugurate an undertaking which in the half century and more that has elapsed has developed into the lehigh university of to-day to all lehigh men that was a memor able occasion it marked the mod est start of a subsequent large growth christmas hall in which the original opening exercises were held a renovated church building housed for a time all the execu i tivi headquarters professors otti ces lecture halls laboratories and recitation rmoms of the university and served as a dormitory as well though small the undertaking was i ambitious ; the title university j continued on page four notice v.m.c.a welcomes lehigh freshmen highly successful reception is tendered incoming class in drown hall the annual freshman reception was held in drown hall on friday evening september 23rd at 7.30 o'clock the reception given to the class of 25 was by far the largest and most cordial that has been given to an incoming class in the last sev eral years practically all of the sophomores and upper classmen were present to meet and welcome the new men the address of welcome was de livered by dr natt m emery dr emery spoke briefly welcoming the class of 1925 to the lehigh fam ily in behalf of the faculty trus tees and student body and giving them some sound words of advice he told the men very plainly that lehigh s courses of study were ri gid but that no man need worry about getting through as long as he did his work consistently day by day he urged each man to become affiliated with the church of his own denomination while here at college he concluded his remarks by say ing that college life is a great game let all play the game to the best of our ability the next number on the program was a cello solo by f c walters 23 which was very well rendered and similarly received the great surprise of the evening took place when chairman little arose and announced that coach glick our new football coach would be the next speaker the result was electrifying for everyone was ex tremely anxious for just such an opportunity to hear the new coach and to learn something of the pros pects for this year's team such a burst of applause greeted the new coach when he appeared fro.n the rear of the room that it was sev eral minutes before the din had sub sided so that he was able to speak coach glick began by telling of his own college life and of his feel | ings and experiences as a freshman ! giving the freshmen many words ' of advice drawn from his own col lege life in regard to the football team and the season's prospects he said ( christian association held its first j 1 meeting of the year in drown hall ! on monday night september 19th ( secretary miller of tfoejstatecol .* legiate young men's christian as sociation attended the meeting and j offered many valuable suggestions toward the success of the coming c year's work of the association continued on page three a former princeton back-field star captain and coach glick is considered one of the greatest coaches developed in the past doz en years after graduation he coached the mercersburg academy eleven who that year won the uni ted states intercollegiates cham pionship as back-field coach at princeton during the past two sea sons he developed an attack that combined every sound idea of eas tern and western football as well as many innovations that surprised and delighted football experts princeton's 20 to 0 victory over yale last year was due in a large measure to the tigers strong and versatile attack that was planned and perfected by frank glick modern energetic thorough full of ideas with ability to impart knowledge and the energy and in sisting courage necessary to drill responding to the call of the coaches the candidates for the 1921 football team assembled at taylor field on september 6th at this time about forty men were met by head coach glick and assistant coaches pazetti lamberton and murphy included in this number were several letter men from last year's team a number of last year's squad and many new men the present season opens a new epoch in lehigh football history for the first time in nine years a rtfew head coach comes to lehigh the present season is not important so much for the change in coaches but for the fact that an entirely new system is being introduced at lehigh the details of which are in another column of this paper although at lehigh only three weeks coach glick has already earned to a remarkable degree the good-will and liking of players and students alike this spirit augurs well for a satisfactory season not only this year but in following years in his first year at lehigh coach glick is faced by a difficult task only five letter men remain from last year's team and the material from the squad of last year is not over-promising this makes it necessary to fill many gaps with green material the development of which must proceed slowly with this material to start with lehigh faces one of her hardest schedules in recent years : rutgers perm state washington and jefferson and west virginia being played on successive saturdays the lafayette game is the end to which all lehigh schedules are pointed and this year the develop ment of the team will be toward this goal four hard contests in a row make top form in early season difficult but when the 19th of no vember arrives lehigh should be represented by a hard-fighting well drilled and experienced combina tion , coxtinuep on page three the new material is large in num bers and shows much promise a mong the men who have been show ing up well in preliminary practice are mellinger a back-field candi the veterans from last year a round which the present team will be built include larkin and frain ends mccarthy guard spring steen center ; cusick tackle ; and rote back field men from last year's squad available include — sarford and reed ends carlisle and morehouse tackles ; hoffman s\virw>on tonking and garman guard and harper lingle bes semer coleman and cousins backs the first college meeting of the year will be held friday at 11.00 a m in packer hall the entire student body is asked to turn out to greet t v new football coach taylor field to show the team that the college is behind them to a man everybody is urged to turn out a most unusual and remarkable banquet was held on thursday ev ening september the i5i , when 150 of the alumni officials of the college members of the faculty ind student representatives were intro duced to the new football coaches frank glick and red lamberton the banquet was given by the le high university hone club started in bethlehem about a month ago for the purpose of organizing the " alumni living in this city and with , in a radius of thirty miles j e little lehigh 94 was toast speaking part of the program he told of the launching of the home club a few weeks ago and action of the committee in nominating officers mr okeson then explained some of the proposed activities of the or i ganization one of the aims to be to get lehigh alumni and clubs to gether occasionally and also to have meetings in december and febru ary and an outing in the spring there will probably be a big boos j ter meeting before the lehigh lafayette football game he stated okey then explained the or ganization of the student self aid bureau which is the new plan by which deserving students are to be given a chance to help them selves through college mr little in introducing glick and lamberton said that lehigh could consider itself fortunate in getting them to head football ac tivities at the university glick ! spoke briefly saying that although i he had only been here a week he i ! already felt altogether at home and that the best of spirit prevails glick paid tribute to the work of pazzetti murphy and reiter in le high athletics and that the family of coaches af lehigh will work to gether in the best of spirit of reiter coach glick said his name was on the honor roll at princeton where bosey is known as one ! who cleaned up vale in his day ! i glick referred to the great sums of ! money invested in football at the j big institutions and the large pro-i ceeds received
