fire alarms failed to operate properly during fire drills held m residence halls monday between 25 and 30 per cent of the section alarms m richards dravo drinker mcclintic-marshall and taylor houses malfunctioned during the drills according to robert reeves assistant dean of students there are 74 alarms m the five residence halls this week's drill was the first m residence halls m over a semester the dean of students office has in stituted a series of emergency measures to insure the safety of students living m the affected buildings meanwhile the buildings and grounds office is coor dinating repairs of the malfunctioning alarms the bells did not function properly because the fire alarm systems are old have not been properly maintained and have been subjected to vandalism reeves stated wednesday m a memorandum to dean of students william quay at any given time a system or a section of a system may or may not work reeves stated m the memorandum the types of repairs done thus far will not rectify the toll which time and years of inadequate maintenance have taken on these systems the memorandum con tinued in an interview yesterday reeves said the buildings and grounds office is taking steps to repair the malfunctioning alarms once this is done he said new fire alarm alternatives for the five residence halls will be investigated until all malfunctioning alarms are m operating condition the dean of students office will maintain a series of emergency safety measures these actions include an informational campaign including posters and section meetings to alert all residents m the affected buildings that the alarms are not reliable measures utilizing area coordinators gryphons and selected residents as substitute alarm systems the purchase of air horns or other devices to be used m lieu of the permanent alarms the distribution of emergency procedures to every resident fire drills to be conducted under the emergency conditions to determine how effective they are and how they can be improved the authority to suspend from the university persons involved m any form of tampering with fire safety equipment or fire itself m the buildings affected reeves said that he will contact the bethlehem fire department to make sure that these steps will be as effective as the normal fire protection system air horns five dozen air horns similar to those used m boating have been ordered for use as temporary fire alarms according to david lee director of residence operations the horns have a canister of pressurized gas with a manually-actuated horn the horns will be placed m renaissance con cert wednesday according to jack pariseau 78 sac president this brings the sac deficit for the 1976 77 year to about 1800 and the total deficit over the last three years to about 11,800 last september dean of students william quay said if the sac continued to add to its deficit the concerts would be stopped after the renaissance concert quay said he would talk to assistant dean of students nathan harris sac advisor to decide the status of the concerts the renaissance concert had 2500 out of a possible 3000 seats filled m grace hall about 900 of 1600 student tickets sold were sold to university students pariseau said he explained that the many tests scheduled this week accounted for the poor showing pariseau admitted it is difficult to make money on sac-produced concerts he suggested that another 10,000 be added to the 10,000 yearly allowance sac receives from the university for concerts i don't think that's a very good idea quay said he suggested three alter natives to prevent the sac concerts from continuing to lose money the suggestions included adding a student activities fee of about 20-$4o to each student's tuition per semester that the sac rely buildings m december their report found numerous buildings and living areas without exit signs motorcycles and lawnmowers con taining gasoline stored m fraternity closets mattresses and tables stored up against boilers m fraternities violating a state law which requires two feet of open air around all boilers liquid fire extinguishers stationed near electrical equipment while dry powder extinguishers which are the only ones that can be used for electrical fires were around ordinary material ceiling tiles destroyed faster than maintenance could replace them providing an excellent draft for a fire the continuance of students refusing to remove flammable and entrapping objects from their ceilings broczkowski said he was frustrated with the students attitude towards fire safety
