concert stars brass winds music for brass and wind instruments was featured at a pro gram given by the lehigh brass and wind ensembles sunday jan 8 in the library works of outstanding classical composers were heard as played on various combinations of brass and wind instruments purcell's fanfare and march for three trumpets and side drum opened the program conducted by wil liam h schempf head of the music department the complete program fanfare and march purcell three trumpets and slide drum can zone septimi toni no 1 g gab radio workshop producing enlightenment for community under the direction of frank e funk instructor in speech the lehigh university radio workshop is making its contribution to ward a more enlightened community and student body by sponsoring the current series entitled many faces has the globe since the program's inception 10 months ago students from 17 na tions have taken their place at radio station wgpa's microphone with workshop interviewer harry b ramsey 50 representatives from nearly every corner of the earth have given glimpses of their native countries to the bethlehem student and citizen audience several years ago mrs elizabeth davis instructor in journalism gave her feature writ ers an assignment to interview foreign students and follow-up with feature stories of their sub jects the idea caught on and soon the radio workshop had arranged to institute a series of programs utilizing the experiences of the 45 foreign students studying here among the foreign students interviewed have been a czecho — slovakian who witnessed the com munist coup in that country in 1948 a youthful german student who was formerly an unwilling members of the nazi youth organi zation and whose father had re fused to join the dominant party as well as a japanese student of cedar crest college who served as a nurse in tokyo during allied bombing raids fulfilling the purpose of giving rieli double quartet of brasses sextet for brass schubert-leid the first time since the end of world war 11 the le high campus is brimming with 17 and 18-year-olds according to a report from registrar george b curtis office they are not being overshadowed by the older vet erans whose education was in terrupted by the war successful over three other candi dates for a place in the class of 1953 of the class of 759 selected from more than 3,000 applicants only 11 per cent saw war service the freshman class in eludes 33 sons 28 brothers two grandsons 26 cousins and nine brothers-in-law of former lehigh calaureate degrees at mid-year commencement exercises to be held february 5 in grace hall four years ago there were 532 married students here and in 1947 this number rose to 577 a year ago 504 married students were studying on the south mountain campus 1 men the class consists of 151 alumni of 53 private preparatory schools while the other 608 attend ed public schools the registrar's report also points out that the married student is vanishing from the lehigh cam students with families are not as numerous as in the past two years only 118 veteran fathers are counted on lehigh's rolls today a decrease of 52 from last year children of lehigh university for use in 880 classes faculty members who were interviewed during the past semester jordan calh student comment feature of faculty evaluation original comment on the reverse side of the faculty evalua tion form is the most valuable part of the plan stressed arcadia president john jordan to the best interests of the stu dents to do the job well stated jordan the program is the result of the combined work of phi eta sigma freshman honorary society arcadia and arcadia's faculty evaluation committee this last committee consists of jordan tom gabuzda fred langenberg har old paulus walter updegrave alan koppes and bruce bennett any questions concerning dis tribution and disposition of the forms should be directed to the arcadia office said they found little help in the check material in a final examination although no evidence of actual use repri manded dropped from course without credit and placed on dis ciplinary probation for one semes ter two sophomores — for falsifi cation of authorship of their term reports reprimanded and given grades of incomplete in the courise removable at the discre tion of instructor and placed on disciplinary probation for one semester a senior — for premeditated intent to cheat suspended from the university for the summer and fall terms of 1949 a freshman — for dishonesty in an hour quiz immediate sus pension from the university be cause this student was young and in his first semester at college the sentence was suspended during good behavior and the student paroled to his residence house counsel for counsel and guidance three freshmen — for break ing into and stealing full finan cial reparation immedate suspen sion from the university for the balance of the semester and parol ed to a facutly member on their return to graduate in february june and october 235 have already signed the insurance applications the february and june graduates are tied in their race each with 30 per cent participation by living groups the fraternities have surged ahead of the field with 39 per cent participation the dormitories run a close second with 33 per cent ronald young bus 50 chair man of the gift committee has an nounced that the committee to gether with its living group sales man is going to make a concen trated drive this month to get those february graduates who have not yet indicated their inter est to complete their
