lehigh university brown and white vol 88 — no 32 bethlehem pa friday february 11 1977 215-866-0331 campus dorm construction too costly parr reports fc by jerry miller the university cannot afford the 3.5 million to 4 million it would cost to build a new residence hall on campus said preston parr vice president and dean of student affairs in an administration report at the tuesday forum meeting during its meeting the forum also passed a resolution calling on the university to implement a complete campus lighting study reports were also presented on energy conservation the university's affirmative action title ix of the education amendment of 1972 report and fire safety dean of students william quay criticized coverage the brown and white gave the recent fires in dravo house housing possibilities dim no university funds are available for construction of rh-12 parr said noting the federal subsidy used in earlier con struction has been discontinued price per bed at present construction is about 16,000 he said parr said housing currently is needed for about 200 students one possible solution is construction on a variety of sites near campus the university is talking to a local developer about a project to house at least 160 students with the buildings leased ten years he said parr said this is the most promising plan at this point he mentioned other options which were considered improbable including con struction of additions to mcclintic marshall house and taylor hall and the construction of a small house m sayre park conversion of price hall into a residence hall renovation of the cigar factory northeast of the whitaker lab parking lot rental of housing on birkel avenue and leasing of other residential spaces from nearby landlords we have no policy that requires residence on campus parr said building a new residence hall on campus is a 40-year proposition he noted he ex plained that student demand for housing now high could drop off m the future he cited projected drops m college b8.w photo by dirusso congratulations charlie charlie brown became lehigh's all-time scoring leader wednesday scoring 18 points for a career total of 1,247 brown's efforts however could not prevent a 91-80 loss to lafayette see story page 12 by jim donahue enrollment drops in grad school first in a two-part series declining enrollment and small class size are cited by university officials as problems of the graduate school the effect of these on the school's cost and productivity are not defined the graduate's school's costs are not evil gvg ' separated from the costs m the un dergraduate schools m the university's budget part-time enrollment m the graduate school 1427 students has decreased by 158 students m two years a drop of nearly eight per cent according to registrar james h wagner full time student enrollment has remained steady around 555 students he said professors m the graduate school blame the decrease on lack of job opportunity and increased costs robert d stout graduate school dean said support for the graduate school has dropped while costs have risen enormously stout also said a very serious problem rises with costs such as tuition increasing rapidly and with more students attending public institutions also m some fields graduate students -
