meeting tuesday david lee director of residence operations discusses changes m dorm configurations taylor to be converted to freshman male dorm by jerry miller taylor hall will house only freshman males next semester according to david lee director of residence operations he also said the housing lottery will take place wednesday feb 9 the announcements came during tuesday's meeting of the forum residence subcommittee other changes m the housing configuration for 1977-78 include drinker house will house men from all classes it presently houses only freshman men — thornburg m centennial i will house only upperclass women it is presently a coed upperclass house carothers m centennial 11 , will house men and women from all classes it houses only upperclass women now twelve fewer spaces will be available to women m rh-11 the complex will house 112 men and 88 women all other residence halls con figurations will remain as they are now taylor men reacted with mixed emotions to the announcement that taylor hall will house only freshmen according to richard kofsky area coordinator for taylor a meeting was held monday night m taylor to tell residents about the change he said many of the upper classmen were angered at the decision lee said the configuration changes reflect an attempt to reduce the number of freshmen m the freshman quad and centennial 11 the present arrangement m the fresh man quad places a heavy burden on ted title ix self-evaluation criticized by joe burke many persons are dissatisfied with the affirmative action title ix report on dis crimination at the university mike ex stein 77 forum vice chairman told the student affair equal opportunity steering committee on tuesday most people don't feel the report spells out definite policy changes he said the university is accepting critical comments on the report until feb 11 copies of the report are available at the office of austin gavin chairman of the steering committee and executive con sultant to the president the report is the result of a study con ducted by the university last semester that evaluates current policies and at titudes concerning treatment and ad mission of students m terms of sex discrimination under the regulations of title dc any institution receiving federal education aid is required to take steps necessary to overcome the effects of conditions that have previously limited the participation of students of either sex m the programs and activities of the institution the university's self evaluation covers six areas admissions and financial aid athletics housing and facilities activities and educational programs student ser vices and the graduate program exstein stressed the need for definite policy changes attitudes on discrimination here won't change until the university makes clear policy changes he said he noted many people are worried the necessary changes will not be made the committee welcomes comments on the report according to preston parr a member of the steering committee and vice president and dean of student affairs we want clear critical comments to help us decide what areas of the report need revision he said parr noted however that comments should be well-planned and well organized he said two reports recently received from christie roysdon reference librarian and member of the academic environment committee and brian finn chairman of the student life committee are excellent examples of the comments the committee hopes to receive michael exstein fire bells extinguishers missing byjohntanzola at least four fire bells are missing m residence halls a recent brown and white survey of campus fire safety conditions has shown two fire bells are missing m mcclintic-marshall house and two m dravo house the survey also revealed several missing fire extinguishers from residence halls two fires m dravo last week drew at tention to campus fire safety conditions during the fires five alarm bells m the residence hall did not ring m addition one bell m dravo had been missing for months a representative from the federal sign and signal corporation went through each residence hall with an allied maintenance electrician to see what parts would be needed according to a buildings and grounds employe the employe asked to remain anonymous the representative came to the university wednesday and said that he will be able to replace all missing parts including missing bells according to the buildings and grounds employe the parts have been ordered but have not arrived he said the employe also said that although more modern alarm systems have been developed the systems which are presently m the older dormitories are still effective the university does keep extra fire alarm parts but its supply of bells is now depleted he said the supply will be replenished with the purchase of parts form federal or another fire alarm company he said in october adt security systems went into richards and dravo houses to determine what type of bells were needed for repairing fire alarms m those buildings an adt spokesman said this was done at the request of the buildings and grounds office he said nine bells were inoperable either because the mechanism was broken or the gong missing he explained a price for replacing these parts was submitted to the buildings and grounds office he said the university did not purchase any of these parts from adt he said the employe said adt simply gave a price quote for supplying replacement parts the office told adt what parts they wanted but this was merely to replenish their stock the employe said there were no parts which had to be replaced he said the employe said the fire alarms systems m all residence halls were checked m november and some bells were reported to be inoperable but not missing the necessary repairs were made and the system was reported to be m operation the buildings and grounds office was not aware that any bells were no warning several fire sign " petitions including suggestions and lomplaints concerning the university ning service were circulated by a group f students at the end of last semester lore than 350 students signed the the results have been tabulated and the iomplaints received have been acted on tccording to nathan harris assistant lean of students the petitions were circulated because we were disgusted with the food said fanet ryan 77 one of the students who nitiated the petitions the group did not lee the results but had the petitions turned n to robert reeves assistant dean of itudents the petitions were turned
