is all that remains of the garbage can m dravo d-4 m which a fire was started arson is suspected according to david lee director of residence operations arson is suspected as the cause of two fires m dravo house 2:30 a.m monday that caused thousands of dollars worth of damage according to david lee director of residence operations the fires were started m garbage cans on dravo sections d-4 and c-3 no injuries were reported fire alarms on the five b sections of dravo did not function when the alarms were set off students on a few other floors reported that their bells were too soft to awaken them henry donaldson 78 gryphon on dravo d-4 said the smoke woke up a few members of the hall after he was awakened the hall was evacuated m an orderly fashion the smoke was so thick that the walls ceiling and floor were not visible donaldson said after the bethlehem fire department was called campus security gryphons and campus police assisted m an organized evacuation of the entire building the smoke on the other hall which had a fire c-3 was less thick the students on that hall said the fire alarm awakened them when fire marshalls inspected the building last november the alarm bells evaluated by the university ad ministration and board of trustees op tions being examined include renovating grace hall to accommodate the arena original plans for building the arena m saucon valley have not been abandoned original plans call for building the 6000 seat indoor arena m saucon valley for use by varsity sports and as a convocation center for graduations large lectures and concerts under those plans grace hall would be renovated for use by intramural and recreation departments presently 2 million have been raised for the arena current estimates however put the cost of building it m saucon valley at approximately 6 million eric ottervik vice president for planning and univer sity spokesman for the acc said that con sidering the financial situation the con struction options are building the arena now or later m saucon valley under a variety of financial plans including borrowing funds renovating grace hall or the field house to yheet some if not all of the ob jectives of the arena postpone any final decision on the arena's location ottervik said the architectural and financial feasibility of each alternative is being considered but no decision has been made the board of trustees will decide at their april meeting on how to proceed with the arena a structural engineer visited the university during winter recess to look at grace hall and the field house his calculations have not been completed ottervik said the acc originally was planned for con struction as two structures m saucon valley the arena and a field house the field house was completed m september 1975 at a cost of 1.85 million planning for the acc began m 1971 at the suggestion of trustee kirk pendleton fund raising for the buildings has been in corporated into phase i and ii of the new century fund campaign gas shortage in state not felt by university by ed bogucz editor-in-chief classes at the university will continue as scheduled despite a critical natural gas shortage m pennsylvania gov milton shapp wednesday ordered all public and private elementary and secondary schools m the state closed through monday to save on dwindling natural gas supplies w university president deming lewis said m a telephone interview wednesday that the natural gas shortage has not been felt by the university because fuel oil is used exclusively for heating academic buildings and residence halls the university has a good supply of fuel oil lewis said students faculty and staff should assume that everything is running nor mally lewis said all other colleges and universities m the lehigh valley are planning to remain open closings of state colleges and univer sities will be decided by the schools of ficials according to lt gov ernest kline who made the announcements at a news conference wednesday the governor's office has not appealed to the university directly to cut back fuel eric ottervik by nettie taylor hunt takes leave from arts college beginning july 1 john hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences will take a year's leave of absence from the university beginning july 1 through june 30 1978 hunt requested relief from his duties as dean from university president deming lewis and provost albert zettlemoyer the leave of absence was approved by the board of trustees last friday the trustees are presently considering a recommendation from hunt that saul barber associate dean of the arts college replace him efe acting dean during his absence hunt explained his request for leave stems from a career choice problem his duties as dean have taken him a long john hunt records valued at 1,000 stolen from unlocked dorm byjohncopoulos residence halls doors left unlocked after workmen began repairing frozen pipes m centennial i during christmas vacation may be related to the alleged theft of 130 records valued at more than 1,000 mike purcell 79 told the brown and white he found congdon house unlocked on sunday evening jan 2 purcell who was visiting a friend said he saw young kids walking around m the building campus police report a group of youths were caught breaking into congdon house dec 28 the building was locked and entry was gained through a window ac cording to the police report monday morning jan 3 jeff cuilty 77 returned to his room m congdon to find the building abandoned and exterior and in terior doors unlocked cuilty said 118 records had been stolen from his collection of over 475 albums he said the door to his room was open with no sign of forced entry cuilty reported the theft to david lee director of
