university must decide exactly what facilities and treatments it must provide and how ef fectively this responsibility is carried out according to shandell someone with medical knowledge should be available at the health center at all times shandell said training the students who work m the health center now or hiring a student from st luke's hospital could alleviate this problem preston parr elmer glick university treasurer he explained that the university does not annually estimate the amount of certain bookstore expenses such as rent light and heat which the university pays for out of its budget the bookstore ran a 75,513 94 surplus after direct expenses for the 1975-76 school year according to robert bell bookstore director the direct expenses are those paid for by the bookstore and include salaries computing costs advertising and transportation as well as telephone postage and packaging costs bell said however m addition to rent light and heat the university pays for expenses such as water insurance employe benefits and the services of the univer sity's auditors laywers and the accounting and bursar's offices bell said the last survey to determine the bookstore's indirect expenses was done for the 1968-69 academic year glick said in that year the bookstore's indirect costs made up 7.5 per cent of its expenses he said if the 7.5 per cent figure was still true for 1975-76 the bookstore indirect costs would have been 89,646.17 in that case the bookstore would have cost the university 14,132.23 on the basis of this type of computation the bookstore probably would be m a hole glick said however he emphasized that since the university does not know how much the bookstore's indirect costs are there is no way to ascertain whether the bookstore loses or makes money for the university the bookstore's surplus after direct expenses for last year would have been approximately 125,000 if it had not lost 50,000 mostly due to shoplifting bell said it is possible that the bookstore lost money last year due to the 50,000 shrinkage he added the bookstore's surplus before indirect costs for 1974-75 was 72,713.80 bell said for 1973-74 it was 76,733.30 he said any surplus from the bookstore goes into the university's current fund glick said the fund currently is m excess of 26 million and includes the recovery of all university indirect costs as well as tuition endowment funds and other revenues the fund pays for the cost of operating the university including in struction and departmental research general administration and plant operation and maintenance
