incorrect lehigh prices competitive bookstore comparison the brown and white has discovered it erred m reporting tuesday that the university bookstore's prices for 33 health and beauty items averaged 30 per cent higher than those charged at four other local colleges in fact the university bookstore's prices are competitive with those of the other bookstores for the items surveyed k an accurate combined average for the " four other schools cannot be computed because many of the 33 items were not available m the sizes listed at one or more of the other four schools as of wednesday all were available at lehigh yesterday lehigh's total cost was 5 per cent higher on the 14 items also available at muhlenberg 0.3 per cent higher on the 15 items also available at moravian 1.3 per cent higher on the 21 items also available at cedar crest and 0.4 per cent higher on the 24 items also available at lafayette the reporter who wrote the story has been dismissed from the staff by the brown and white editorial board the reporter who has been reliable m the past on sunday had assured editors that he personally visited all of the book stores to survey prices of the 33 items and that the prices were accurate however on wednesday he admitted he had visited only the lehigh bookstore and had en trusted the surveys of the other stores to a friend he said she is not a college student the brown and white then sent editors to all five bookstores to check prices of the same 33 items almost all of the prices see chart page 4 reported for the muhlenberg moravian cedar crest and lafayette bookstores were incorrect most of the prices are substantially higher than had been reported and many items for which prices had been reported were not available at one or more of the four stores several were available only at lehigh a corrected chart can be found on page 4 the total cost of the 14 items available at lehigh and muhlenberg was 17.20 and 16.40 respectively the 15 items found at both the lehigh and moravian stores cost 19.60 and 19.54 respectively the cost for the 21 items at lehigh and cedar crest was 26.37 and 26.02 respectively and the total cost for the 24 items at lehigh and lafayette was 34.18 and 34.04 respectively ride em boys university president deming lewis roughs up an unfortunate senior m last year's donkey basketball game the popular event will be held again this year see story page 8 lottery cannot solve shortage by ken bandler news editor the residence lottery system proposal which the forum will consider monday as with any lottery will not solve the university's housing shortage only the administration can do that but the system is a method for determining who will have to live off campus while still retaining representative portions of each class and news analysis keeping stability m the university's residence system the proposed lottery developed by the forum residence subcommittee and ap proved this week by its parent committee the student life committee would place all rising sophomores juniors and seniors m a graduated percentage lottery system all freshman would be guaranteed housing m accordance with current university policy during the past two months the lottery plan was drawn up m 13 subcommittee meetings including two saturday marathon sessions a spirit of cooperation evolved among the student leaders and administrators directly involved with residence matters members of the subcommittee include students from the major residence halls groupings on campus the four under graduate classes and residence halls council president maureen quirk 77 also a forum member in addition two ad ministrators robert reeves assistant dean of students and david lee director of residence operations attended the sub committee meetings m an advisory capacity cooperation and a willingness to com promise were lacking among the sub committee the rhc and the ad ministration one year ago when the long standing policy of placing only sophomores m the lottery was being reconsidered by the three groups in dividually last december when the residence sub committee had not adopted any lottery system the rhc brought to the forum a resolution to retain the sophomore lottery the forum adopted the resolution the administration however had favored placing all rising sophomores juniors and seniors m one lottery—a 3 class lottery system and appealed the forum resolution to the board of trustees during the spring an agreement was reached between the forum and the ad ministration at a trustee subcommittee meeting the sophomore lottery was retained and a preference-number system was instituted for rising juniors and seniors the proposed graduated percentage system this year is valuable because it does not depend on the amount or type of housing available nor on the enrollment level at the university a percentage of returning students of each sex and class may live m university housing depending on the number of rooms available the percentage will be greater or smaller depending on the number of returning students the new lottery can be plugged into any school's housing system where a shortage of spaces exists the deficit of spaces here is expected to be much more than 200 spaces next year according to the subcommittee's report in preparing the lottery proposal the subcommittee considered the necessity for the university to comply with see lottery page 4 inside : weekender p 5 alarming failures p 6 donkey b-ball p 8 74 grad elected p 70 triple feature p 16
