university may end up with a budget deficit of 150,000 for 1976 77 according to estimates made by elmer glick university treasurer and vice president speaking at wednesday's open hearing of the forum budget subcommittee glick also said that last year's budget surplus of 154,000 would be used to cover the deficit if it occurs glick also reported that the joint budget for residence halls and the dining service ran a 160,000 surplus last year and that the university will not announce next year's tuition rates until january due to a change in the procedure for drawing up the budget this year's budget may run a deficit primarily because the interest rates on short-term investments are lower than had been planned on glick said the 1976-77 budget was based on projected interest rates of 6.5 per cent but the rates have been about 4.75 per cent to cover the projected deficit the university would use funds from last year's 154,000 budget surplus which were placed in a contingency reserve account the surplus from residence halls and the dining service which are budgeted together as a cost center apart from the university's regular operating budget also was placed in a reserve account and will be retained for purchases and renovations glick said glick explained the way a cost center works saying all of the in come of both of those sources is available for all of the expenses of both of those sources he added tuition increases which in the past have been announced in september or october will not be revealed until after a board of trustees meeting on jan 21 glick said he robert reeves spoke to members of the panhellenic council at their meeting monday and presented the possibility of each sorority having its own building at smags members of the council introduced reeves proposal to their respective sororities this week and report positive feedback everyone was gung-ho about it at the meeting last night said marsha marson 78 alpha phi representative to panhellenic problems of transportation and isolation from campus were considered by mem bers of both alpha phi and gamma phi beta to be outweighed by the advantages of living together as a unit we've considered all the disadvantages of being so far away but we figure we'll all be together so we won't really be too isolated said cindy davis 77 alpha gamma delta representative to panhellenic if all three sororities agree to the idea i believe it will work out said davis alpha gamma delta hasn't had a meeting yet since dean reeves talked to the panhellenic council but a majority of the sisters i've talked to like the idea the sisters of gamma phi beta also are m favor of living together m smags according to valeric pardo 78 assistant panhellenic representative for the chapter all three representatives stressed living m the house would be mandatory you'd either have to live off-campus or with the chapter m smags said pardo reeves declined to comment about the proposal until all three sororities have held meetings and officially presented it to their members for a vote elmer glick title ix evaluation to be released by annette taylor the university's affirmative action title ix report will be released within the next month according to austin gavin chairman of the student affairs equal opportunity steering committee and executive consultant to the university president this is the third draft of the report the report which was scheduled to be completed last july is the result of a study conducted by the university last semester that evaluates current policies and at titudes concerning admission and treat ment of students m terms of sex discrimination under the regulations of title ix any institution receiving federal education aid is required to take steps necessary to overcome the effects of conditions that have previously limited the participation of students of either sex m the programs and activities of the institution the university's self-evaluation covers six areas financial aid athletics housing and facilities activities and educational programs student services and the graduate program each area was examined by a student advisory com mittee undergraduate admissions was not included m the evaluation because the admissions policies of private under graduate institutions are exempt from title ix regulations there are no official channels the report must go through before it can be released but it will go through any mechanics we want it to gavin said the report will be reviewed by university president deming lewis he said asked about the delay m the report's completion gavin said dean and vice president for student affairs preston parr and i have had too many other things to do gavin praised student assistance m conducting the study and said that the austin gavin unanimous vote by forum group okays lottery by peg pfenninger a resolution proposing a graduated per centage residence lottery system for rising sophomores juniors and seniors was unanimously passed by the forum student life committee on monday the resolution includes continuing the guarantee of on r-t_rv.t-.no p__f____h rr f it.#./.tn.>.ff
