is favorite m student poll 53-33 by jeff bodenstab 38 believe ford will win same number pick carter ■associate editor president ford was the overwhelming favorite m a straw poll of lehigh students taken by the brown and white last week of the 791 students who responded to the survey ford has support from 53 per cent of the registered voters intending to vote m t today's election as compared to 33 per cent supporting jimmy carter eugene mccarthy took 3 per cent of the vote 3 per cent said they were voting for another candidate and 7 per cent didn't know who they would support lehigh students were split over who they thought would win the election an equal number of students 38 per cent said that ford or carter would win while 21 per cent of the students polled said they didn't know who would win the brown and white presidential election survey was conducted by putting questionnaires m every mailbox of the approximately 4,000 undergraduates and compiling the results of the 791 returned to the brown and white office the results do not necessarily reflect the attitude of the entire student body since the returns do not represent a random sample more than 92 per cent of those students returning ballots indicated that they had registered to vote in sharp contrast to the lehigh survey carter swept every university m a joint poll taken at five northeastern schools carter's most decisive majority was at yale where he took 61 per cent of the vote as opposed to only 26 per cent for ford carter also won a majority of the vote at three other schools perm harvard and rutgers at princeton carter managed a 49 per cent to 42 per cent edge at all five schools democrats heavily outnumbered republicans although students at lehigh tended to vote along party lines ford managed to swing many democrats and capture a plurality of the independent voters ford took a strong 84 per cent of the republican vote while carter could manage only 7 per cent among democrats 59 per cent said they will vote for carter but ford took 35 per cent for carter among the students polled 35 per cent were republicans 32 per cent were democrats and 26 per cent richard spriggs by sharon hirsch inadequate funding delays plans for police call base twenty-four hour service at the campus police communications base m the university center is being delayed until there is adequate funding according to william quay dean of students he said he hopes the service will be provided within the month however richard spriggs vice president for administration said fulltime service might begin m january but the university would need to hire a minimum of five employes at a cost of 20,000 to 30,000 a year to institute the 24-hour service spriggs said he would like to see the funds for the additional employes budgeted for the next fiscal year the communications base currently is open during the week from 8 a.m until 4:45 p.m at other times students must call the bethlehem city police whose operators relay the calls by radio to the campus police the university pays 8,000 to monitor the city police frequency spriggs said the university has not budgeted for a change m operations for the current fiscal year it has however ap plied to lehigh valley manpower a federally funded agency for assistance until manpower is able to provide services spriggs said the university will employ students to help with campus security in the meantime he said the university is working on another idea to help with the communications situation students manning the university radio network would be the intermediary and broadcast calls over the air he explained making use of such a system depends upon fcc approval quay said that the key to the whole security issue on campus is 24-hour campus police coverage if we don't have that we don't have very much he said forum budget committee to conduct an open hearing elmer glick university treasurer and vice president will speak on the univer sity's budget processes and procedures at an open hearing to be held by the forum budget subcommittee wednesday nov 3 m uc-403 it is the first time an open budget hearing has been planned it's an opportunity to get a hold of glick without going through the rigmarole michael exstein 77 forum vice chairman said and besides a lot of people would like to know where their money is going mary tarduno 79 subcommittee co chairman said questions would include efforts made to streamline budget procedures whether the university has considered more department participation m budget decisions and to what extent review of past expenditures is used m determining the budget each year this hearing will provide accessibility to the administration exstein said if people are willing to ask questions it will be good tarduno said the subcommittee hopes the meeting will help it to identify budget issues requiring attention according to exstein pressing budget issues include tuition increases vis-a-vis the present rate of inflation and creation of new administrative posts most recently the hiring of a new assistant for the vice president for planning by dave blanchard students plan meal boycott to air gripes several students are trying to organize a student boycott of a meal at the university cafeteria to express dissatisfaction with the m w wood dining service one of the students involved who asked to remain unidentified would not give a specific date for the boycott but said it will be sometime soon and that the group plans to ask residence halls officers for assistance the student said many students have gripes about poor service and general quality of the food and cited specific examples such as lower quality yogurt this year and strings of mornings without milk at rathbone hall edward evers dining service resident manager said he had not heard about the lack of milk however he said he was sure that dannon yogurt is still served and that the only difference this year is the con tainers the yogurt is not m individual containers because it is bought m bulk to save space the student said the dining service has been uncooperative with students requests and gave the recent oktoberfest as an example the original plan called for students to present their meal cards at the entrance and eat inside the stadium the see students page 9 b&w meeting the news staff
