lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday october 12 1976 215-866-0331 vol.bb — no 10 committee criticizes draft of 1 0-year plan i major revisions are necessary m the draft of the university's 10-year plan according to the forum priorities plan ning and development pp&d com kttee rhe committee decided at a meeting thursday to draft a letter to university president deming lewis commending the administration for beginning the planning effort but stating disapproval of some of the methods used m compiling it the draft is a linear projection of the university's past growth experience said bruce rosenthal 78 pp&d chair man m an interview this week he said the committee was not satisfied with some of the constraints the plan was drafted under it is a dreamless document committed to no change m any direction leonard wenzel chairman and professor of chemical engineering said of the plan at the meeting eric ottervik vice president for plan ning drafted the plan which was sub mitted to the committee two weeks ago the draft represents a summary of the long-range planning efforts of the university's academic and non-academic departments the title a plan for lehigh univer sity—l97s to 1985 seems inappropriate since it just states things m the past and does not say much about plans for the future rosenthal said at the meeting we want to face the issues but not be pessimistic be optimistic about the future but also realistic ottervik said he ad mitted that the plan was intentionally optimistic since the report would be distributed to many groups and people it deals with fairly general issues ottervik said he said if the draft were to include all material from the individual plans there would be hundreds of con tradictory viewpoints and the printing expense would be too great ottervik said he did not feel the con densation left too much out all the material is available m the master copy he added however committee members ex pressed a different point of view i don't have a feeling that it reflects a living bruce rosenthal trustee mohler to address forum meeting harold mohler chairman of the university's board of trustees is expected to address the forum at its meeting friday afternoon according to david amidon forum chairman this will be the first time ever that a chairman of the board of trustees has appeared before the forum the trustees are meeting at the university the same day in other business the forum will con sider two by-laws changes a by-laws change establishing a procedure for forum involvement m appointments to the rank of dean or above will be offered by the priorities planning and development pp&d committee according to the proposed by-law change when an administrative opening occurs the appropriate forum standing committee will establish a subcommittee to conduct the review of candidates in most instances the subcommittee will name two of its members to serve as members of the search committee established for the appointment m question and will have the opportunity to review final candidates the forum will consider another by laws change concerning the filling of student vacancies on the forum previously student vacancies were filled by determining the runners up m the previous year's elections the proposed procedure would include nominations of candidates at forum meetings appointment by the forum miller the university is not doing enough to recruit minority students and staff ac cording to gary burnley assistant professor of fine arts burnley one of two fulltime black professors at the university made the comments m reaction to a recent brown and white series on minority enrollment black students are generally un comfortable on the campus burnley said blacks account for 1.6 per cent of the student population and as a group they feel alienated and ignored by the white population he said a greater mix of white and black students would help to remedy the situation he added culture shock is real for the black student there are very very few black people here he said the university needs to be publicized m the black com munity he added a black recruiter would make a dif ference because it is at least an effort burnley said he blamed a poor attitude m the admissions office for many of the recruitment problems they haven't done enough he stated the university is paving the way for not making it by saying that there will not be 200 black students enrolled by 1980 burnley said four years is a long time and it is too early to quit he added admissions officers recently said that the university could not reach its stated goal of 200 black undergraduates by 1980 burnley stressed that more effort also is needed m recruitment for women and minorities burnley supports the creation of a task force on minority recruitment students faculty and admissions staffers should be a part of the task force he said not enough blacks and women are on the faculty burnley said the
