lehigh university brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday september 21 1976 215-866-0331 vol 88 — no 6 17 blank checks ripped off in linderman burglary byjohncopoulos seventeen blank checks were stolen and at least one office was burglarized m a break-in at linderman library this summer according to wayne hoffman assistant director of the library's ad ministrative systems office signatures on five of the checks had been forged and the checks were cashed for a total of 1,775 hoffman said he said the checks belong to verbshoff associates a computer consulting organization operated by hoffman and thomas ver bonitz director of administrative services m the library there was no sign of forced entry into my office or the exterior doors of the library either the locks were picked or someone has an illegal master key hoffman said detective owen mcfadden of the bethlehem police department also recognized the possible use of an illegal master key hoffman was notified by union bank july 23 that his checking account had been overdrawn by a substantial amount the union bank told me that three of my checks had been cashed at the first valley bank last week the numbers and names on the checks did not correspond to my records hoffman said at that point i discovered that 17 checks were missing from my desk he added union bank notified first valley^bank that the checks were no good hoffman said two more of the checks were cashed before anything could be done the five bad checks became the responsibility of the first valley bank said hoffman neither union bank nor verbshoff associates will have to pay for the five checks he added all five checks were signed with hoff man's full name including middle initial other information was carefully typed out on the checks the people that cashed the checks had complete identification in cluding driver's licenses and selective service numbers hoffman said the identification probably was stolen mcfadden said i have a suspect m the case mc fadden said university police and security officials from first valley bank are also investigating half time activity the lehigh marching 97 greeted the yellow jackets of baldwin-wallace with this special half-time formation at saturday's football game the welcome seemed to inspire the visitors for they recovered from a two-touchdown half-time deficit to nearly upset the highly favored three young men early friday on the road behind m&m and the freshman quad according to police hospital reports show the student was not raped city detectives are still investigating the reported assault the student told police she was walking from m&m to carothers house about 2 a.m when she was attacked she said she was able to scratch one of the men m the face before she either fainted or was knocked unconscious she told police she awoke m a clearing off the right side of the road near dravo house police said the clearing is about 30 yards away from the reported site of the initial attack police said the student's clothes were torn and she had bruises on her buttocks and back no weapon was reported displayed the brown and white has learned the student has reported several similar in cidents m the past according to dean of students william quay the student would have to be held accountable if friday's incident turns out to be a false report he said the university would take disciplinary action or require the student to undergo counseling police said the student described her assailants as being in their mid-to-iate teens and speaking very rapidly in what she thought was a foreign language she described one as being between 5 foot 10 and 6 feet tall thin and having curly dark shoulder-length hair she said the one she managed to scratch was about 5 foot 5 the road behind the dorms has almost no lighting and is bounded by steep poorly lit this road behind m&m and the freshman quad was the site of an alleged assault of a woman student early friday the road shown here in daylight has almost no lighting at night math professor drowns canoeing on lehigh river rolf adenstedt associate professor of mathematics drowned saturday m a canoeing accident on the lehigh river carbon county deputy coroner thomas k thomas said although adenstedt was wearing a type-one life-guard-approved life-jacket the strong current forced him straight out on the down side of the river thomas who termed the death a freak accident said the primary cause of death was asphyxiation due to drowning the secondary cause he said was drowning he explained that two river watchers were stationed on an old railroad tower to maintenance supervisor resigns by ed bogucz managing editor one of the two men responsible for university residence hall maintenance resigned effective yesterday justin an dreoli residence halls maintenance supervisor cited failing health and con flicts with the allied maintenance corp as reasons for his resignation andreoli and one helper were respon sible for the physical maintenance of every university residence hall excluding smags he said maintenance of the 24 buildings included mending of wear and tear damage rest room repair and fire extinguisher window and lighting replacement he said andreoli worked at the university for seven years the last four as residence maintenance supervisor before allied took over andreoli said maids and janitors helped with residence halls maintenance by performing simple tasks such as light bulb replacement then people were reasonable it helped us a lot he said when allied supervision began the custodial crew was told that these maintenance tasks were not their responsibility and that they were not to perform them andreoli said this policy change lead to an increase m residence work requests we're currently backlogged with over 100 worksheets andreoli said you don't want to get up m the morning when you think about what you are going to face he said in his letter of resignation andreoli said he was resigning due to failing health and loss of man-hours caused by too great a work-load by persons who do not fully understand the problems involved m the maintenance operations of residence halls and are not concerned with any ideas or suggestions to improve the operations of residence halls it is of my opinion that residence halls is at the bottom of the list as far as physical maintenance is concerned the letter continued it has always been my thinking that residence halls should be near the top of the list to receive service entitled to them after all they students of residence halls see
