lehich university brown and white vol 88 — no 4 bethlehem pa tuesday september 14 1976 215-866-0331 allied forbids interviews with b&w bykenbandler news editor k allied maintenance corp headquarters new york city has sent an order to all allied personnel at the university telling them not to speak with the brown and white i ßichard irwin allied project manager the university said he did not know the reason for the order from company head quarters irwin would not comment fur ther irwin did say all inquiries concerning allied now must be directed to george mailloux allied account manager m new york the brown and white has tried to reach mailloux for several days but tithout success i would be very upse if mr irwin ould not talk to the brown and white ric ottervik university vice president for planning said ottervik is the university officer responsible for allied operations here william berzinskas allied supervisor for the university's powerhouse told a brown and white reporter never to call him again the reporter was working on a story concerning the powerhouse and its successful start engineer junior mark weaver follows his blockers through the kutztown line saturday in taylor stadium sparked by three first half touchdowns including two in the first five minutes of the game the gridders coasted to a 29-6 opening game victory see story on page 12 progress in fishkin suit stalled by donna frabotta senior reporter progress m the 21 million mitch r fishkin suit pending against the university is temporarily at a stand still according to robert holland one of the attorneys representing the university the judge who will be hearing the case has been involved m another long and complicated case and all other cases have been postponed holland said he added the judge's new trial list should be issued very soon the trial originally was scheduled for june 6 holland also said he will be having another pretrial conference with the fishkin attorneys this week fishkin died from multiple head injuries . resulting from a fraternity incident m which he fell from a moving vehicle m saucon valley sept 13 1973 he was a pledge at delta phi also m the car at the time of the incident were driver richard groves 75 frank barber 74 and john latimer 75 all members of delta phi the three were named m the 21-million suit brought by fishkin's father seymour fishkin also named m the suit were former delta phi president scott detar delta phi fraternity inc ; nu chapter of delta phi fraternity lehigh university preston parr vice president and dean for students affairs william quay dean of students and robert reeves assistant dean of students charles spaziani northampton county district attorney said at the conclusion of his investigation that fishkin was being taken to saucon valley as part of a fraternity prank when he jumped from the car near the homer research labs however the suit alleges that groves latimer and barber seized captured and kidnapped fishkin and tied and bound him with rope preventing any freedom of physical movement allegedly he was then forced coerced and compelled without his consent and under threat of physical force to enter a volkswagen vehicle according to the suit the car headed for saucon valley and fishkin was forced to leave or was thrown onto the pavement from the volkswagen on south mountain drive a wrongful death action the first of two causes of action named m the suit demands compensatory damages from all defendants m a sum m excess of 1 million and punitive damages against each and every defendant jointly and severally m a sum m excess of 5 million survival action the second cause of action demands compensatory damages from each defendant m excess of 5 million and punitive damages m excess of 10 million limb-lopping despite maintenance problems in the rh-11 complex professional limb loppers were busy last week improving the grounds around the apartments residents were awakened by the sound of grinding machinery used to remove several dead trees b&w photo by bogucz forum subject of debate since 70 by sally velthaus first in a series the university forum created m an atmosphere of student discontent and controversy is now entering its seventh year of operation since its inception m may 1970 the forum has been the subject of constant debate jritics of the university's legislative body cite its inadequate amount of student partici pation while supporters praise its progressiveness the uproar of general discontent among university students m the spring of 1970 was characteristic of universities across the nation the catalyst for lehigh's student movement was a relatively small issue an assistant professor of sociology was fired without the consultation of majors m that department a crusade for his reinstatement gradually grew into a campus-wide attack on the obvious lack of student voice m university government the former student government arcadia was almost com pletely ineffective m forming university policy student discontent had been growing for six years over the need for government reform arcadia had approved the repeal of guest curfews but took two years to put the ruling into effect student involvement grew during this time with rallys for coeducation and protests about fraternity pledging policies a move for improving the arts college also began those originally involved m the movement for increased student participation were few m number a larger number of students didn't become involved until university president w deming lewis expecting violence moved a scheduled on campus board of trustees meeting to new york even middle of-the-road students joined the campus-wide campaign after lewis move after the trustees meeting m new york 2000 students at tended a rally m grace hall where lewis defended his policies by this time arcadia had disbanded itself because it had become ineffective the following day 2500 students gathered for a special meeting with the faculty to develop a new system of govern ment classes were suspended for four days and discussion led to the emergence of the forum the forum constitution was adopted by the board of trustees see interviews page 4 see forum page 5 inside fieldhouse hours p 4 new assistant p 5 grandma says p 6 welsh visitors p 10 gridders victorious p 12
