maintenance corp has worked without a contract since it took over maintenance operations at the university last november however the combined cost-saving efforts of allied and the university's building and grounds department have saved the university 100,000 m the last 10 months according to eric ottervik vice president for planning neither ottervik nor richard irwin allied project manager expressed con cern over the absence of a formal contract ottervik the university officer responsible for allied's operations ad mitted the current lack of a contract is unusual and blamed the delay on negotiations between the university and allied's lawyers the university and allied are operating under a gentlemen's agreement ac cording to irwin under the present arrangement allied submits detailed bills to the university for services performed he explained both sides seem to be satisfied with what they have now and are just waiting patiently for a formal solution irwin said much of the savings realized by allied and buildings and grounds over the past 10 months is due to a reduction m the size of allied's maintenance staff ottervik said the staff was reduced from about 150 to approximately 120 workers over that period irwin said most of the cuts were effected through attrition or retirement he said however irwin stressed that m no place was a cut made where service was decreased a smaller number of workers can handle the same work load because allied teached the workers to be more ef ficient irwin said we don't bullwhip anyone irwin continued all we ask them to give us is a fair day's work for a fair day's pay last november thomas verbonitz university director of administrative services said the university could expect to save approximately 75,000 annually under the agreement with allied ottervik said the 100,000 savings realized by allied and buildings and grounds was immediately put towards deferred maintenance projects the painting of christmas-saucon hall is an example of one such project he said richard irwin frosh tennis hopeful collapses dies following early workout session bydaveklucsik a freshman tennis recruit collapsed during team workouts late friday af ternoon at the saucon valley tennis courts and died a short time later robert wargo 18 of dravo b-3 was dead on arrival at st luke's hospital at about 5 p.m after he collapsed while jogging with the university tennis team he was the second lehigh student within a month to die while jogging joseph c hendrzak 21 who was graduated from lehigh m june collapsed and died after jogging along the lehigh canal m bethlehem aug 4 hendrzak was awaiting the start of a military tour of duty wargo was a son of mrs betty l drumm wargo of 428 edgeboro drive newtown bucks county and the late albert r wargo he registered m the college of engineering and physical sciences one week before his death according to several sources campus police were called to the south side of the tennis courts at 4:34 p.m friday when police arrived at the scene an athletic department trainer was attempting to revive wargo with heart massage wargo reportedly had a faint pulse at the time campus police administered oxygen at the scene and were notified that a city ambulance was on its way the trainer reportedly drove the ambulance to st luke's while ambulance crewmen at tended wargo an autopsy performed this weekend revealed that wargo had a basic heart disease according to dr george marsh jr lehigh county coroner marsh said that the cause of death was cardiac failure due to stress on the heart the exact cause of wargo's heart disease would not be known for another two weeks marsh said wargo was described as one of our better freshmen by tennis coach bruce smith the team reportedly had in terrupted its court workouts for the jog on the first day of practice smith refused further comment university health center officials also refused comment pending further in vestigation local newspapers had several reports of wargo's past health record but century fund phase 1 goal reached by jeff bodenstab associate editor after four years of intensive fund raising the university has reached its new century fund phase i goal of 30 million this is the initial goal of a two phase 10-year development program the new century campaign is the largest ever undertaken by the university more than 31 million had been collected as of june 30 the final date of the cam paign according to paul franz vice president for development the total is more than 1 million over the original goal phase i of the campaign originally was scheduled for completion a year ago m june 1975 due to economic conditions during the past few years however the deadline could not be met and the cam paign was extended an additional year the athletic and convocation center acc originally scheduled to be included m phase i of the campaign has been made an ongoing project to be carried into phase 11 according to franz the acc includes a field house which already has been completed and an indoor arena which has not yet been built the two facilities will be situated next to each other m the saucon valley playing fields area several million dollars more m funds will be needed before construction of the arena can begin according to franz char broiled food service employes quelled a grease fire flareup on a
